I have a 1993 VW Golf 1.8 CL Auto and whilst driving on the motorway the engine oil light and warning buzzer came on.The car has had a recent oil service and the oil level is normal. The oil light goes off when starting.
Any suggestions!

Has anyone direct experience of ABS failure on a Xantia, i.e. the warning lamp staying on. It is said that the ECU will be faulty on the earlier cars but I would like to hear exactly what failed on yours.
Many thanks,

I've had the ABS light staying on on my XM, but it was just dirty connections on the sensor.
I suppose you could always check for a false alarm by finding somewhere safe and deserted and stamping on the brakes!!
Moral - check the cheap things first.
My D reg XJ 3.6 would not start. Just a cough and then nothing. I changed the plugs. Nothing. Andrew Moorey made suggestions (many thanks) but nothing. I called the AA today. "It's flooded" he said. "What, after a week?" "Yes". He cured it by removing the petrol pump relay, getting me to churn it, and as soon as it began to fire, he plugged the relay back in and BINGO.
I admitted to having started it twice from cold just to move it a few yards as I was changing the wheels round. He said that caused it. He said it's common on small cars. He had previously tested all electrical circuits.
Last time I called the AA was an Audi 100 which conked out on the motorway. He diagnosed a faulty fuel pump relay, took the relay to bits by the side of the road and soldered a bad connection. It was a permanent repair.
I think the blokes who work for the AA are brilliant. Well worth £95 per year for me and my wife. Read more
Thanks for letting me know what the problem was, duly noted. We (Tune-up) ocasionally come across a similar problem caused by starting and stopping the engine after a few moments' running particularly on Vectras and Omegas. This is usually caused by the hydraulic tappets "pumping up" and causing loss of compression. I recently had the same problem with a 1.8 16v BMW. Same scenario, start engine, move a few feet to get out of the garage, switch off.
I need a full set of tyres for a Golf Tdi (185x60).
The car is used for long trips on the M/way most of the time.
I want good economy/tyre life.
What would you put on the car?

My 306TD has only had Michelin Energy MXT from day one.
The front tyres lasted 34k, (second pair still OK after 20k)
rear tyres are still the original's.
As HJ mentioned - these have a lower rolling resistance, and use a fairly tough wear resisitant compound.
IMHO these two factors balance out the initial higher cost.

I've recently bought a 2 year old Xantia HDI LX and, whilst the ride is good, there seems to be a lot more "bump thump" than my former 1994 TD LX. I've bounced the suspension with the vehicle on tickover and it seems as though the spheres etc. are behaving properly.
Is this likely to be due to the change of tyre profile? The HDI has 205/65 x 15" tyres and I seem to remember the old TD LX had 14" wheels with narrower and higher profile tyres.
Can anyone comment?
Thanks in advance

Following the Sluggish Mondeo and the debate over different types of petrol, do the same differenced exist for Diesel ? there seems to be a proliferation of Low Sulphur diesel, city diesel, Pura diesel, and someone in germany buys his fuel in the Cooking oil section ...... Read more

when you say best results, what do you mean?
I tend to use Esso, Jet or Shell diesel in a GT TDI Golf but do not notice any difference in smoke or mpg
I have an MGB with ordinary wheels and am thinking of converting it to Wire Wheels.
Can anyone advise me of what`s involved in doing this.ie
What do I have to buy and do to carry out this change.?
How much will it cost for either a D-I-Y job or for a Garage to do it?
Is it easy to do? ( Any forseeable problems ?)

Check out the internet, the www.mgcars.org there is avery good website which covers B's and midgets and has dealt with this question on their bulletin board many times. Check the archives. If you are an MG owner this site is an essential on your "favourites" list.
I believe you will need new front hubs and new rear half shafts all available through MG owners club or Moss motors.

I have a problem with the clutch on my Audi A4 1.8T. The biting point is very high and difficult to control as a result.
I asked my dealer to have a look at it and they have pronounced its operation to be perfectly normal. I recognise that there is nothing, as such, wrong with the clutch as it has never slipped but it's annoying all the same.
Is there anything I can do? Read more
I've got a 306TD which used to do about 18k/year of mostly motorway mileage. This hasn't done it any harm
This is now going to turn into approx 7k/year. I won't be getting rid/replacing the car for at least a year - I want at least one year of low depreciation!
Do any of you have any recomendations regarding servicing/maintainance as I am loath to fork out for a full service on an 6 month interval basis, rather than an every 10 months with on a mileage basis.
The car won't be used for short journeys (i.e. anything less than 10miles).
Thanks in advance

I'd be more concerned about the type of mileage this 7K is going to be. If the car is being relegated to tootling down to the shops/school run etc. then I would recommend changing the oil/filter twice per year.
A local bloggins should be able to do that OK for a fairly small sum, then you can have the Peugeot dealer do the 6K service for the official service record book. Anyway, that's what I used to do with a 205 and it seemed to work.

HJ's right-the vital thing here is to get a pressure gauge on the engine and check the oil pressure. It may need to be run temporarily into the cabin to prove/disprove the warnings.
