Hi,

My son has removed the battery from his Nova , and when replaced has found that the radio requires a security code.(which he hasn`t got)

He has tried to obtain this code from the previous owner and the local Vauxhall dealer , to no avail.

Can he sort out this code himself , or can it be sorted somewhere?

He is computer literate , so any technical answer should be understood.

Any suggestions welcomed..

( Or would it be cheaper to buy a new radio ?)

Thanks in advance.

If it's the original factory-fitted Philips unit, try entering the code 1234. That's what they were set to when new, and few owners will have bothered to change it. Worked when I had the same problem on my Cavalier.

Don't make too many other guesses though - each wrong one causes the unit to lock up for an increasing length of time, as a security measure.

I need a new car. I can afford up £12,000 ish. I do 35,000 mpa, mostly on motorways. I'd like something Mondeo sized, automatic and economical.

Any suggestions? Read more

Why not a slightly older Merc??????

Instead of ploughing the revenue received from speed camera fines into more speed cameras why don't we start using technology to start clamping down on persistent offenders of other 'offences' such as tailgating and driving over the hashed lines at junctions in order to move swiftly from the middle lane to the exit with little consideration for others.

The Gov't could also make it a specific offence to stay in the middle lane without good reason and use technology to enforce this.

Chatting to friends in transport research they believe that educating drivers out of the belief that motorways are just 3 cruising lanes dependent on what kind of vehicle you drive and how old you are, would significantly improve traffic flow to an extent where proposed lane widening could be cancelled.

In Germany you end up spending almost as much time looking in your rear view mirror as you do through the windscreen if you are in the overtaking lanes! When I first started driving over there I was somewhat surprised to find cars coming up behind at 150mph+! They tend to have less accidents on the autobahns than over here but when there is an accident the chances of survival is fairly minimal.

Has anyone heard of it kept having a flat battery in the mornings. The main dealer changed the alternator, battery and cpu and eventually swapped the car for another V70 but it has the same fault.
I am trying to find anyone else with the same problem. Read more

Thank you. I believe Lancasters did this to the first V70 but never found the drain because the fault was only intermittent. They changed the battery twice as well as the alternator and cpu. Now they have swapped the car for a replacement which has the same fault I am completely at a loss to know what to do. The battery is normally fine but every few weeks it is flat in the morning. Do you know any specialist firms I could take it to?

Can I fit 235/70R16 tyres on the steel rims of my 1997 300TDi ? Read more

Dave N

If the rims are 7" then you will be ok. You may have to adjust the steering lock bolts a little to stop the tyres hitting the suspension arms.

I am experiencing progressively worse 'jerkiness' with the CVT auto transmission fitted to my Escort 1.6i LX.

Does anyone have any experience with problems, or the longevity of Ford's CVT transmission ?

Hi,
I too found the same problem with my car(daewoo Espero), where in I found the problem is due to the Distributor, whose copper windings insulation packed up. Perhaps this might help u.

Some weeks ago Honest John published the factor for converting traditional horsepower (HP) to metric horsepower (PS or CV). Can anyone remember the factor? ...and yes I know PS and CV stand for the German and French translation of Steam Horse Read more

I have another question to ask about oil. I have a Wolseley 18/85 'S' mk 2 on a 'K' plate. It uses 20/50 motor oil and it does burn a bit of oil. I have been offered a drum of 30/40 engine oil for free and i was wondering if it would do any damage to the engine. The engine is an Austin 1800 'B' series with a 3speed auto box.

Ash. Read more

Hi John,

I'm only going on what the chap has told me, it could be 20/50 for what i know ! When i asked him why he had it he told me ' it was going cheap so i bought it '. The Land Rover was a complete wreck, so i don't think he was bothered what he put in it to be honest. You were spot on with the oil that i should be using, it is 20/50. I'm just looking to save a few bob but i don't want to put my car at risk in the process. After what you said about the oil viscocity being dubious, i may let my garage owning mate have it to run his fleet on. Also, the drum has no markings on it at all. The oil may be free, but the risk is too high i think.

Could someone confirm that a DOT 5 brake fliud is a higher spec than a DOT4 - eg higher boiling point or similar?

As with oils, is there a problem in putting, say, DOT 5 fluid in a system originaly specced for DOT 4?

Are these specs (American Dept. of Transport) on the Net?

John

Hmmmm, yes thinking about it you must be right, the figures I had were just quoted as degrees and I (wrongly) assumed they were degrees C.

I also read today that if you put dot 5 fluid in an ABS braking system designed for dot 4, because of the increased compressibility of dot 5 it can have an adverse effect on the ABS performance????

Does any one had any distributor problems with Daewoo(or Vauxhall Cavalier) ? Can any one suggest a place I can find Distributor at a reasonable rate( My car is Daewoo Espro, 1.8L) Read more

Work mate of mine had his dizzy fail on a daewoo matiz, but this was repaired under warranty.

This would of cost £450 + if he stumped up the cash himself.
