Does anyone have any experience of vacuum control problems on a 1990 Golf mkII 1.6 Pierburg 2E2 carburettor? I don't think the choke pull down unit on the one i have is functioning correctly, i've had to reverse the bleed valve connected to the servo vacuum line in order to make it work. The pull-down unit is okay, I think. Is it anything to do with somrthing on the carb. called a waxstat/expansion element? Read more

Jaap Van Der pijl

Hello !

We had the same problem on a Jetta 1.6, the waxstat costs £ 41.13 - part number is 027129243. These carburettors are a nightmare once they start to play up and and they cost approx 200 quid to replace. which may be the best option unless your mechanic knows them inside out.

Don't under any circumstances go to the VW Main dealer, they are not interested in fixing your car, but they will try to find as much wrong with it as possible until you conclude that it is not economical to keep it and buy a new one from them.

I've had 3 Jettas, 1 Golf, 2 Sciroccos and 2 Passats. They have nearly all succumbed to carburettor problems. Most have been kept until they fell to pieces, ( one passat had the cambelt break at 210.000 miles) and they have not being particularly unreliable and seem well built, but the biggest problem is with the dealers attitude not the cars.

Fortunately there are some good private VW specialists about.

A friend has just purchased a 6 month old tdi (115 pd ) passat. It broke down and the VW garage found water & dirt in the filter. It needed a new fuel pump costing £500+.

He cannot point the finger at particular filling station or indeed the muck may have been in prior to his purchase.

VW say it is not a warranty claim which seems fair enough however two points

1.What is the point of a fuel filter if it lets muck & water ruin the engine ?

2.He had taken it to two separate VW dealers prior to the breakdown complaing of the engine spluttering when starting and they had both plugged it into the VW computer and reported no fault found.

Any comments ?

thanks
Martin.

ps My own 1995 Golf tdi (90 bhp ) has a plastic drain valve on the fuel filter to run off water etc but the Passat PD is a sealed system. Read more

Thanks everyone for the imput,

The car was an ex rental one so someone could have put something into it I suppose. Had done about 8,000 miles . Still had the VW warranty though.

But my pal did ask 2 garages to check the car when it started to sputter slightly .

AND

What is the point of a filter. I had always assumed that the vehicle would just stop to prevent damage.

What does anyone think of the old shape Civic Aerodecks 1.6 VTEC SEs currently on sale at some Honda dealers for about £10500?Are they good value at this price as a family go anywhere do anything car. These are brand new cars. Read more

Malcolm

Personally i think they are a great buy because i managed to buy the last one in my local dealership 4 weeks ago for march 1st delivery and it cost me very little to trade up from a 98 s 1.5 lsi aerodeck to what is a far superior car in terms of equipment(air con etc.).So i would say grab one if you still can!.

Running my second Subaru Justy (1990 GL II) have noticed over this winter mayonnaise on the oil filler cap I recall that the previous car did this. There doesn't appear to be any water in the coolant or any loss of water. The rocker cover is plastic with a metal plate inside. Could it just be condensation on short journeys? I doesn't tend to be too bad after motorway journeys. Any suggestions?

Also can anybody tell me where I can get a workshop manual as Haynes didn't take this car to pieces. Read more

Adam Going (Tune-Up Ltd)

Dear Tom,
If it's not unsing any oil or water then short-journey condensation is favourite. What oil are you using? Try a quality 10/40 semi-synthetic, and make a point of giving the vehicle a good run (15-20 miles at dual-carriageway speeds) at least once a week. Sorry, can't help on the manual.

My P reg Ford KA has just failed it's MOT because the front brake discs are corroded and worn. I was shown the discs with the car on the ramp and there is evidence of slightly uneven wear but no real ridge on the disc.

Kwik fit immediately after the test said that the brakes did not need replacing for at least 3000 miles.

Is there any specification for brake wear in the MOT test? Is it worth appealing?

Thanks

You should look at this link. It provides in-depth info on what the MOT test actually is:

Re the letter in todays paper from P V of Reading , I fitted a set of these tyres to my Toyota Carina 1.8 two years ago and have had no problems at all, in fact I changed them yesterday after 26000 miles for another set of the same tyre. Read more

The letter from PV of Reading in Saturdays Telegraph paper is interesting.

Fairly recently I bought a set of Dunlop SP 200s from Town and Country Tyres (part of Qwik Fit Group?) of Henley on Thames, just down the road from Reading! From the start I took the car back as the ride was very bumpy and queried if there was a problem with the tyres ie. being out of round etc? I was told they were OK but the wheels were changed round and rebalanced. There was a slight improvement but the ride was still very poor compared to the previous Uniroyals. I assumed I had just made a bad choice of tyres.

In the past I have found Town and Country very good for price and service, so where does one go for an independent assessment of the tyres? After reading of the problems reported by PV of Reading I will be following this matter up as it could be that there was a bad batch of SP 200 tyres delivered to the Reading area recently?

Any assistance with contact numers would be appreciated.

I have just realised that my car insurance policy does not include additional cover for any outstanding finance should it be written off. My previous insurer did, but in an effort to save money i forgot this when comparing quotes. My new insurer does not offer this option.

Does anyone know if I can get cover for this item alone? my policy doesn't run out until September, and I don't really want to wait that long before finding a better insurance deal.

Thanks. Read more

You can buy this insurance, called GAP insurance, separately.

what do you think about main dealers as a whole - I had some new directional tyres fitted at a porsche main dealer - get back home while admiring them noticed they had been put on with the arrow facing the wrong way - ok they resolved the problem and did financially compensate but what would have happened in the event of an accident????- tell me your stories. I have enough stories (true and proveable) about main dealers to fill a book. My advice is NEVER go anywhere them unless someone else is paying. Here are a few examples.
Jaguar XJ6 blown engine in 1987. Main Dealer price for recon £1500 + fitting. I had it done for £300 inclusive.
BMW recon manual gearbox £2000 fitted. I had it done for £450 inclusive.
Nissan Maxima ECU £1200 + VAT part. (God knows what for fitting) I paid £175 for the part and fitted it in 20 minutes.
Toyota dagnosed requirement £800 for 1 caliper 2 discs and pads with fitting. It cost me £22 inc VAT and perfect.
Audi 200 turbo replacement radiator fan relay after 2 WHOLE days £125. Need i say more? (it plugs into the fuse box)
I sometimes use central tyres, in Alton. i don't really know them, but I talk to the guy doing the work, make friends, and give him a drink.
If you know nothing about car repair, ask a friend who does. NEVER trust a main dealer unless you are not paying. They are not evil. They just replace everything at full price even when it could be fixed. They are for big companies who don't care.

had the misfortune to damage rear bumper of my boxster the main stream repairers all wanted to replace the bumper etc £800 plus VAT, however, have stumbled accross a new company called Scuffs (exeter branch) they can repair paint etc in what appear to be very high tec modern facilities for a quarter of the price, well worth a look - i will report back with the outcome.
