I have just started looking for a Fiat Coupe 20V turbo and 2 cars I rang up this week were either being sold by UK army/RAF people or the previous owner was army/RAF and the cars had been imported with the obvious tax savings. Are these cars as good as UK supply cars and providing they are HPI clear are the values unaffected?

There are always diferences with prices on cars, but to say that because a car has come in from abroad and been imported by anyone other than an official importer is worth less at any age is wrong. All of the big super markets have unofficial cars for sale and find little difficulty finding homes for them with end users, and when they have finished with them they will often find their way into franchised dealers stocks or auction halls and very few people either know or care. There are people that might have some resistance to an Opel Zafira over the Vauxhall badged equivilant, but judging by what i have seen at a large Vauxhall dealer locally the customers were paying the same price for six month old Opels as Vauxhalls.People in the trade may try and knock them back but the retail customer sees the car as the same.I could bore you with many other examples my favorite being the Mitsubishi Shogun/Pajero where the word says the the Shogun is worth far more than the Pajero, real life sugests something rather different.

I have a '96 Synergie 1.9 diesel which the whole family loves as long as they don't have to drive. We can live with the handling, but it could do with much more power (why didn't citroen fit the 12-valve turbo-diesel from the XM?). We will be keeping it for a while yet.
Anyone any ideas about tuning? Read more

I drive a Xantia (oh no!) with 2.0HDi (110hp), great engine, the rest of the vehicle leaves something to be desired

Wandering if anyone can help..
A car recently collided in to the side (front wing / door area) of my older model 328i. As a result, the ventilation blower now malfunctions (it had always worked perfectly before the impact and started to malfunction immediately after). It works intermittently, switching itself off irrespective of what the control panel indicates or what buttons are pressed. It comes back on of its own accord, but is mostly inoperable. The car has climate control.

However, the insurance company's engineer maintains that the malfunctioning blower is unlikely to be incident-related as the blower and associated parts are located centrally under the bonnet / dash and not in or near the side of the car.

Has anyone got any experience of similar problems with the blower, perhaps caused by a collision? Or does anyone know how the collision might have caused this problem ? Read more

I took my BMW316i Tourer to Whitehouse BMW Ruxley Corner this morning. The fault was diagnosed as faulty resister and was replaced within fifteen minutes under the extended warranty. Coffee and tea were provided and the service was most courteous. What more could one want?

Dear John,

I have a Nissan Micra 1993 L 1.0 litre 40ks on the clock.I travel 6 x miles daily to work and 6 x miles back. This is in the New Forest area on winding roads up to 40 MPH.

With the new small cat cars needing high revs I stay in 3rd gear up to and including 40MPH just about all the way on my journeys to work.
Is this good practise to adopt as I only use the car on short journeys?
I know fuel consumption will be up but will the gear box be damaged because of this?
Would I be better useing all 5 gears and instead go for a 20 mile extra round trip once a week?

Thankyou for your advice

You could use 4th for the last couple of miles.

Thought you may find this interesting. My 2.0 focus has been suffereing from an intermittent revving problem. My local dealer tells me that this is caused by Ford fitting a batch of Mondeo engines in to Focuses. The cure is to replace the Mondeo inlet manifold for a Focus one. They assure me that's the only problem. Read more

Just found this excellent site. Had all sorts of problems getting Ford to acknowledge and fix the revving problem on my Focus 2.0

They finally told me about the Mondeo mainfold problem and have had the new kit fitted for the past 4 days. No problems yet, but as you say it was intermittent. I swear though that the revs are still not dying correctly and that there is a slight 'over rev' when changing between the lower gears - this makes smooth changes difficult, especially when cold. If this doesn't improve it will go back again (6th time!) - does yours do this?

I'm now concerned with the amount of induction noise when accelerating, as it seems far too loud.

Quality generally has been shocking with blown fuses, wind noise, misting up fog lights, remote key sender etc problems.

Must say though that the handling and roadholding are exceptional, whcih makes the car great fun to drive. The ESP is great fun in the wet.

I read in road test reports the new small Jag and the merc c coupe the prices listed are unbelievable.
The Merc in Germany is from 47000dm to 57000dm and the Jag starts at 55000 dm .In fact I am about to order a new Merc coupe with 2.0liter motor full length sun roof clima radio with 10 cd player and mobil phone and altogether it is under

Dear Andrew,

The 2.0 litre motor isn't very nice. You'll be much better off either with the 2.2CDI or the 2.3 Kompressor.

I'm coming towards the end of my 3 year Options agreement on a Fiesta Finesse and will have to 1. hand it back 2. contract again 3. pay £3800 to buy the car (36K miles) I would like a new car but as this was my first Options, in the light of the recent price reductions etc. can any kind soul give me some advice on what I should be doing, asking the dealer etc. to get a good deal. I am considering a car warehouse such as Motorpoint. Many thanks, Linda. Read more

Neil

I'd do everything you've suggested:

How much is your preferred car from Motorpoint and Trade-Sales, say? Add on the cost of an extra warranty and breakdown cover. Then see how close the dealer will get to this price.

How much is your car worth? Try www.glass.co.uk, www.parkers.co.uk. Will the dealer offer you the going rate?

Work out the cost to change.

If you get a good deal then go with a dealer. If not then try the car supermarkets and try a private sale (or an auction?).

If anyone has any experience selling privately at auction then I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on whether you got a good deal or if the fees outweighed a dealer's trade-in offer.

Hope this is useful.

Neil.

I have a year-old Focus tdi, which I hope to keep for a long time!
I bought Hot-Start, on the basis of its manufacturer's claims that, by heating the coolant to 80C, it eliminates most cold-start wear & high fuel consumption. It has a built-in 3Kw heater & a pump, which is plumbed into the heater circuit. Fitting is claimed to be 'an easy DIY job'.
Comments? Well, in the Focus' crowded engine bay, it is most certainly not DIY - took a qualified motor engineer nearly 2 hours. Next, it takes the Focus much longer than the claimed 20 mins to reach max temp (about 50-60 mins for the tdi). Also, make sure you use metal junctions on the heater pipes, unless you like replacing the coolant frequently!
Does it do any good? Dunno, really - mpg appears about the same, but it IS nice to get into a warm car on a cold morning. Wear has yet to be assessed.

Anyone else got one - what do you think? Read more

I used one, most successfully, on a Mercedes 190E 2.6 but was unable to transfer it onto a C class 2.5TD-no room in the bay.
They are excellent pieces of kit, especially if short journeys are a predominant feature of the cars usage(When engine wear is particularly high).
Initially,I too, suspected it took abnormal time to fully warm up but after
checking water temperature,I realised it was taking circa 20-30 minutes on really cold days. There is a reference in the Kenlowe instructions regarding using the car gauge as an indicator.

We're looking to replace our Omega Estate, and with three children (7,5,1 yrs) need a full five-seater. As well as the third diagonal rear seat belt being essential, I wonder - is it 'ergonomically correct' to consign one of our children to sit on the central portion of the rear seat - what is essentially an armrest? There's no point arguing against the ugliness of the Multipla - even with alloys and body-coloured bumpers the car still has an air of monstrosity. The wealth of design talent that must have been available within the Fiat group before the loss of da Silva to SEAT must surely have been able to recognise that something somewhere was out of balance with the Multipla. In Engineering, form typically follows function. In the Multipla we have an exception: functionally brilliant but stylistically challenged.

What Car (www.whatcar.co.uk) had a recent comfort test that may shed some light on non-MPV alternatives.
