Suzuki Grand Vitara (2005 – 2014) At A Glance
Launched in 2005, the Grand Vitara had a mild facelift in 2008 (it wasn't showing any wrinkles). The front end is slightly different, door mirrors now incorporate side indicators, and there are some extra touches of ‘quality' inside, such as grey wood inlays to the dash.
The size (and price) of it makes it directly competitive to the Hyundai Tucson and KIA Sportage, something the old Grand Vitara wasn't because of its old-tech live-axle running gear. And, unlike its shorter sister, there is a petrol automatic version available.

What's the best small SUV with an automatic transmission?
"I'm looking to change my current car after the winter for a small SUV. I have back and left knee ligament trouble so an auto box is preferable. I'd be looking at something like a Vauxhall Mokka, Peugeot 2008, Ford Ecosport/Kuga or Volkswagen Tiguan. Budget is £7000."
A Volkswagen Tiguan could be a good option although, unless you cover a lot of miles, we'd recommend a petrol and you'd be looking at an older 2.0-litre TSI 4Motion with your budget. These are rare and could be expensive to run. How about a Suzuki Vitara? They're a bit smaller than a Tiguan and not as plush inside, but they're very reliable. We'd recommend a Toyota RAV4, too.
Which used SUV is best for rural driving?
"I'm very nervous about buying a car as I've been stung a few times. I have moved to a rural area with lots of narrow lanes and deep gullies at the sides. I want to trade in my 2010 Saab convertible (as it's unsuitable for my new area) for something more robust like a Honda CR- V, Mazda CX-5 or a Landrover Freelander. I have around £5000 to spend plus the trade-in price of the Saab. I would be most grateful for any advice."

Can you recommend a budget-friendly, reliable, no frills 4x4?
"We're looking for a second car. Something with no frills; a proper 4x4 (rural Highlands and Islands) with a raised driving position, reliable and preferably under £5000. We are considering an old Nissan X-Trail, Skoda Yeti, Mitsubishi Shogun and Suzuki Vitara. Would you recommend any of these or something different? Thank you."
You might find that second-hand Shoguns have led pretty hard lives and finding a good one can be difficult. Diesel X-Trails can be troublesome, while we've also had a lot of issues reported with Yetis. My money would go on a Suzuki Grand Vitara or Honda CR-V. Both ought to be very reliable choices. Also, consider a Dacia Duster if you're after a no-frills 4x4.
Buying a used Suzuki Grand Vitara - which model would you recommend?
"I'm looking to buy a mid-size 4x4 which I will mostly drive in town. I like the look of the Suzuki Grand Vitara and have a budget of £5k-£10k. I would like to change the wheels, add spoilers and other cosmetics, so that needs to be included within the budget. It must also must have a spare wheel on the door.
Can you tell me:
1. Is 1.6 engine too weak for this car?
2. Is 2.0 engine good enough - any know faults with it ?
3. Can a spare wheel be retrofitted? "

To fit a spare wheel to a non spare wheel version would require a completely different door and hinges. Suzuki later reverted to a door mounted spare, but this was a space saver, not full size.
