Ask Honest John
Is there a good substitute for Renault's discontinued Clio Sport Tourer?
"I have a 2010 Renault Clio Sport Tourer 1.5 DCI Dynamique. I would gladly replace it with another but am disappointed to learn that the Sport Tourer will not be available in the UK. Renault says there is insufficient demand. We think they didn't promote this model very well. Everyone thinks mine is a great design. We selected it as it had a 5-star safety rating, good fuel economy, a good flat boot with no sill, five doors and fitted TomTom. Have you any suggestions for something to replace it? I'm not sure I want anything bigger. Is the Renault Captur a good choice? Or, as my husband suggests, do I need to spend more and go for something like an Audi A1 or A3?"
Funnily enough I've seen a surprising number of old shape Clio Sport Tourers on UK roads, despite Renault's reluctance to import them to the UK. The answer now, though, is the Renault Captur which looks great in metallic blue with a white roof: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/renault/renault-captur-road-test//
Which car has enough boot space for golf clubs?
"I need to replace my 2005 Peugeot 1.4 SW that was written off by hailstones. I carry golf clubs, trolley and shopping on a regular basis. I like the Station Wagon because it is flat in the back but I understand this model is no longer manufactured. What alternatives would you recommend?"
Used Ford Fusion, Clio Sport Tourer, Peugeot 207SW or a new SEAT Ibiza ST. Test and video of Ibiza ST here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/seat/seat-ibiza-st-facelift-2012-road-test//
What would you recommend to replace the discontinued Ford Fusion?
"I have a 2007 Ford Fusion 1.4TDCI, which I bought new. This car suits me in every respect and I intended buying a new 1.6TDCI towards the end of this year. However I note that that the Fusion is discontinued and I am therefore in a quandary as to what to buy instead. My budget is around £13,000."
The replacement for the Fusion is the Ford B-Max and you can still get a Peugeot 207SW or a Renault Clio ST. But the best choice is a SEAT Ibiza ST, as video tested here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/seat/seat-ibiza-st-2012/
The 1.2TSI 105 makes more sense to most buyers than the diesels, but it does have a small lip to the load area and the undersides of the rear seat squabs are not covered, so they look messy.
Buying a used Clio Sport Tourer
"I want to buy a 2008/9 Clio Sport Tourer. Either a 1.2 TCe or 1.5 dCi86 if the price is right. What common problems do I need to look for with these engines? All the TCe's have a mayo like substance in the oil filler cap when cold. Is this a trait of this engine? "
Very few sold. Hardly ever see them on the road. Never in the trade. But a 2008/9 diesel should be before they started fitting diesel particulate filters, so no problems on that score. The old 1.2 TCe is not the same as the new 1.2 TCe in the Megane.
