The 2008 facelift Ford Focus may be a common sight on our roads and was the default choice for many company car drivers, but there's a very good reason for it. It's a genuinely great hatchback that excels in nearly every area. And that's no mean feat when the competition includes the the Volkswagen Golf and Honda Civic.

Technically the 2008 Ford Focus isn't really new, it's a revised version of the second generation Focus, introduced in 2004 with most of the faults of that model corrected. The basic structure has been left along, so it retains the superb handling and comfort of before, along with the five-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating.

But the outside was sharpened up while the interior got a major revamp with improved quality, better soundproofing and a neater design. As before, there's plenty of room for four adults while the layout of the buttons and controls is very user-friendly. Usefully, ESP stability control was also made standard on every 2008 Focus and there were more variations than ever.

Aside from the high performance Focus RS and Focus ST models, it's the super efficient Focus ECOnetic 90 with Start-Stop that grabbed the headlines thanks to economy of 74.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 99g/km that means it still qualifies for free annual VED.

There's no doubt that the 2008-2011 Focus was better than ever before, with a high quality feel, great handling, a comfortable ride and a wide range of engines. But there was one big drawback - the list price. High list prices made the Ford Focus a relatively expensive car and the entry-level models cost more than the cheapest Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series.

My car had a respray after an accident - but the new paint looks out of place with the rest of the car?
"A Local Authority vehicle bumped into my eight year old Ford Focus. Their insurer, Zurich, arranged repairs via a Nationwide Repair Centre. The repairs were all to the near-side. While the actual repairs are fine, the difference in the high gloss polish of the new paintwork compared to the remainder of the car is very obvious. The car looks really silly when it has been washed and in my opinion has lost value due to the repairs carried out. I have asked Nationwide and Zurich to buff/polish the remainder of the car so that the paintwork looks similar all round. They totally refused and the Zurich engineer stated that they would only consider the damaged areas. I feel I am worse off than before the accident. If I had been told beforehand that the paintwork polish would not match up, I would have gone to my independent bodyshop and not the recommended repairer. Do I have any redress at all?"
Unfortunately, Zurich is not responsible for your vehicle's paint being in poor condition. You also have no redress with the Financial Ombudsman Service. Had you gone through your own insurer, ironically the FOS would have challenged the insurer and could have forced them to paint the rest of the car. I would suggest it highly unlikely the car has lost value as a result of the repairs being carried out, as it is the other areas of the car that are already devaluing it. They have technically put you in a better situation. You can raise a complaint with the bodyshop though. What Zurich should have done was suggested a cash in lieu settlement rather than repair the car.

Is my car likely to fail the new MoT?
"I have two old cars registered with your website (2008 diesel Ford Focus and 2005 petrol Nissan Almera). I would like to know if they will likely fail their next MoT. Can you let me know what the changes are to the MoT as of May 20, 2018?"
There will be stricter limits for emissions from diesel cars. You’ll also be given a fail if the tester can see smoke of any colour coming from the exhaust pipe. There are a few new things that will be tested: these include if tyres are underinflated, if the brake fluid has been contaminated, fluid leaks posing an environmental risk, brake pad warning lights and if brake pads or discs are missing. How much does a new cam belt cost?
"I was charged £700 for the fitting of a new cam belt kit on my Ford Focus. Was I overcharged?"
That is on the high side for a new timing belt, tensioner waterpump and alternator pump. If if did not include a waterpump then yes, you were definitely ripped off.
