How can I check that my daughter's Ford Ka's engine cooling fan is working?

My daughter's Ford Ka overheated in a shopping centre yesterday. The AA turned out for her and decided the engine cooling fan was not cutting in. The car got home fine since it wasn't standing in traffic. How do I check if the fan works or not?

Wire it directly. If the motor runs, it's fine, and what you need is a new engine block temp sensor/sender switch.
