Where is the engine code in my Volkswagen?

How do you find out which engine my Golf has, can you do so from the VIN? Is it EA 189 or 288.

Should be top LH corner of the V5C next to the CO2. Might say EDC 6 or something like that followed by a 6. But if it's a Golf Mk VII then it should have an EA 288, not the older EA 189.
