Ford Galaxy won't start from the ignition

My car won't start from the ignition key, however, can be started by putting power from the battery straight to the starter, which the AA did for me to get me home.

So far I've had a few garages look at the car, however, no one seems to be able to diagnose the problem. The engine runs fine it is just that the car can't be started normally.

Just before this happened the display on my dashboard showing what gear the car is in went out. Have you come across this issue before and if so, what is the solution?

Wiring problem. Probably the lock that prevents the engine from being started unless the lever is in P.
