What winds you up most about driving & other motorists and what if anything can/should be done about it ?

My pet hates (in no particular order of priority) are:

- Drivers who don't indicate,
- tailgaters,
- bull-bars,
- double parking,
- middle lane hogs,
- serial speeders,

and finally....., those drivers who, when faced with pedestrians ahead waiting to cross the road in the pouring rain or fellow motorists trying to exit a junction and either
a) deliberately drive just fast enough to stop them doing so but just slow enough to maximise their agony !
or

b) turn off without indicating just before getting to them !

What winds you up folks ?

Oh, I early forgot:

- Traffic engineers who when faced with a reported speeding problem in a key road within an already congested area decide to install a 'pinch point' which will reduce the road width to 1 lane and thereby not only slow the traffic but bring it grinding to a halt at peak times !
What really gets up my nose is ... - volvoman
or even 'nearly' forgot !

Inconsiderate, selfish morons who choose to park on the pavement rather than on the road. It's an increasing trend round here and often there's no need for it at all and pedestrians are forced to walk in the road.

Just seen a new Merc ML parked over the entire pavement round the corner despite having an empty road at its disposal just a few feet away.

Lazy, ignorant or what ?

Try to develop a telepathic sense so that when they turn without signal you already know that this car in front always turns left here - has done every day for umpteen years - thinks everybody knows that - and couldn't give a monkeys even if they don't.

ok, serious response:

(1) Tailgaters
(2) Owners of the middle lane, helping perpetuate (1)
(3) People you let out of side roads who fail to acknowledge your existence
(4) Those (1) who are so close they can't read the "Keep Clear" road markings
(5) Uninsured, untaxed morons who get away with it.
(6) Drink drivers. Why? Why in the name of all that's holy is it that important that you have to drive home in that state?
(7) Those who overtake you when you've pulled over for a blue-light run, pulling into the path of the speeding ambulance to do so

On the other hand, greatly appreciate those who do let you out of side roads during the optimistically named "Rush Hour". Bless 'em.

The only thing that annoys me is people whose driving threatens my life. Not common, with the exception of tail-gating, but not rare either. I can ignore/avoid most other things.
What really gets up my nose is ... - RichL
I'll limit it to just the most annoying of my pet hates.

1) Motorcyclists who think splitting the lanes is a right not a privilige, and in fact beleive that you should move to the extreme edge of your lane so they can get through. They also think that pulling into your safety gap is okay, and pulling up on your right to turn left across the front of you is a really good idea.
Basically, any motorcylist within 30 miles of a built up area during rush hour.

2) Double on the above for Scooters, and especially those who like to go to the front of a queue and then pull away very slowly, wondering why the queue behind them is getting annoyed.

3) People who, when you pull into the outside lane to let them off the sliproad, accellerate up the inside of you so you cant get back to the inside lane again. This includes people who undertake when others have pulled out to let you off the slip road.

4) Drivers who, when faced with lanes merging due to roadworks, will drive right to the last cone and force their way in. Frequently without indicating or acknowledgement (except of course a single raised digit if you dont get out of their way)

5) People who wont let you out of a side road, junction or even your driveway when it would cost them a total of one car length. This excludes people who wont let out someone they know has just used a rat run to avoid half a mile of slow moving queue and is attempting to force their way out.

6) Tailgaters - although the BX has an unbeatable method for dealing with them. Its called air in the rear suspension that causes the back to kick up a few inches when the brakes are applied. From the rear, it looks just like an emergency stop >:-D

7) People who drive at night with one sidelight and the other headlight on main beam or adjusted to point at the sun visor of approaching cars.

8) People who leave their foglamps on when the last foggy day was six weeks ago.

i actually read somewhere ages ago that this type of thing should be done more often IIRC it was called "the zipper effect" - let one in then go yourself. Apparently the queues wouldn't have chance to get too big in one lane and then would move smootly (if rather slowly).
What really gets up my nose is ... - Andrew-T
Drivers who choose to regulate traffic in tailbacks by deliberately occupying two lanes.

The north-eastern approach to the Runcorn bridge has a 2-lane dual c'way for about 600m, when it narrows to one lane to join the bridge. Most drivers know this so they all stay in the left lane; so at busy times the queue tails back to some traffic lights. Seems more sensible to use both lanes, but of course the left-laners don't like that too much. Zipper idea is the best in that situation.
What really gets up my nose is ... - HF
I think most of mine have already been covered here. However there's one more I can think of, which might be a little uncharitable to mention, but I will mention it just the same.

I've complained in the past about people refusing to let you out from a junction, at lights etc, because it gains them one car-length's distance.

There's another group of people, usually in the dark, who don't flash at you or wave you on, to give way to you, but just dawdle a bit so that you have no idea if they're letting you out or not.

If you take your chances and go for it, no doubt the person really was just dawdling and will then move ahead so you can't get out.

If you don't take your chance, then the other motorist gesticulates wildly in an angry and 'you must be stupid' manner, because you've been dumb enough not to realise that his/hers was a genuine let-out attempt.
HF
What really gets up my nose is ... - SteveH42
That's a bit of a tricky one, HF. I don't like flashing people as it is far too easy for such a signal to be misconstrued and an accident result. I do tend to wave people in, but that's not always that visible, so I usually just wait to see how keen they are on going, and if they don't take the hint within reasonable time I assume they are't too bothered.

Just remembered another one of my pets - people who pull up right behind you when waiting in traffic on a steep slope. No matter how careful you are it is quite easy to roll slightly when starting, and the extra pressure of someone right behind you can easily distract you enough to stall completely.
What really gets up my nose is ... - HF
SteveH42,

I take your point - maybe you're one of those about whom I was ranting ;)

Agree totally with your other point about steep slopes.
HF
What really gets up my nose is ... - smokie
Although I don't tend to do it much, using the outside lane until the "last minute" would work if the zipper effect was observed by all. If "they" wanted the outer lane to be clear earlier than the cones start, then "they" only need to start the cones earlier. If you see what I mean. So why do people get so upset when others use the whole of the available road?
What really gets up my nose is ... - RichieW
The way I see it Smokie is that the cones start at a particular point along the road but there will have been warnings on the roadside telling everyone that the road is narrowing for the previous 800 yards at least. I really can't stand the people in Teutonic repmobiles who dash up the outside and demand to be let in.
Best thing I ever saw was a load of workmen in a flatbed truck stopping the above mentioned by straddling the the two lanes. There were about three of them (probably with pickaxes in the back of the truck) so the rep couldn't intimidate them. They wouldn't care about the truck being scratched either. The rep went absolutely hysterical (Must have been missing a sale) but could do nothing.
What really gets up my nose is ... - No Do$h
FWIW, I believe police advice is to merge in turn at the cones to minimise disruption.

No Dosh - He who dies with the most toys wins.
What really gets up my nose is ... - RichL
What I'd love to see is, instead of the cones sweeping gently in from the side, is to have them set up in the middle of the road and run for a couple of hundred yards before hitting the roadworks proper.
So any git who zooms up the outside and tries to cut in at the last moment will find themselves sitting in a dead end with a dozen other gits behind him >:-D
What really gets up my nose is ... - smokie
But isn't the point that there is NO request to merge into one lane UNTIL the cones, so why move over earlier? The 800 yd signs are just warning of an impending request. So if we ALL used all lanes until the cones, and merged sensibly, then no-one would be better or worse off.

btw it gets on mine too when perople do it...
What really gets up my nose is ... - RichieW
Whether I am right or wrong Smokie I feel that it is better that people merge into one lane while traffic is moving rather than forcing people to come to a halt to let other drivers in (When the cones sweep across).

I can see using two lanes would be helpful when the lanes merge into one shortly after a roundabout or junction though. This would prevent the aforementioned being clogged up if both lanes were used.

What the argument comes down to though is crappy roadworks rather than driving ettiquette. I hope that we can both agree to that.
What really gets up my nose is ... - Andrew-T
Richie - what do you mean by 'crappy roadworks'? Just an inconvenient obstruction, or something else?
What really gets up my nose is ... - RichieW
Andrew-T,

What I mean is the classic British road works syndrome.

Three miles of a cordoned off lane in the capable hands of a fat bloke on a JCB and two blokes with shovels looking like they have all the time in the world. Makes my blood boil!
What really gets up my nose is ... - smokie
Yes, way too many roadworks taking way too long - can't disagree there. I drove on the continent recently, 1000 miles in a weekend, and don't recall seeing ANY roadworks!

Etiquette is not something that many British drivers will ever subscribe to, but in the merging situaiton, if done absolutely "properly" the traffic would slow, but not need to stop, IMHO.

Our problem is that there will always be ONE driver who will not let someone in, or ONE driver who will push and shove his way in, and it only takes ONE driver to foul up an otherwise smooth system, as can be seen so many times on our roads and motorways.

Middle lane owners club members.

Like the lady who joined the M11 this morning at the same junction as myself.
She came up the slip at 40, which is the correct speed due to the curve on it, ignored the empty inside lane of the motorway and went straight into the middle lane.
Still at 40.

I overtook her whilst I was still on the slip and she was already in the middle lane, I joined the inside lane at 55-60 and did not have to pull into the middle lane to overtake anything for about a mile.

I don't think that she thought about it at all, just seemed to have the idea that the inside lane is for lorries only.

People who stick to 40 on a perfectly good single carriageway A road, where you could do 60, on a day with good driving conditions. They hold you up for miles, but then what makes me especially mad is that they continue through into the 30mph speed limit still doing 40. It proves that they are just dozy and not paying attention to anything, rather than cautious. Probably become middle lane hogs on the motorway.

People who overtake you when you have paused and pulled in to give way to oncoming traffic.

Other people who think that they can drive your car as well as their own and offer you helpful headlight flashes, beeps and universally recognisable hand gestures, when you are committing some heinous offense such as not entering a box junction until your exit is clear, ONLY doing 70mph when OVERTAKING a truck, in the middle lane (speed may have been adjusted down here for legal reasons!), ONLY doing 30mpg through the town, not pulling out in front of that volvo from the side junction because everybody knows that he turns down that junction every day and thus does not need to indicate... :-)

Probably can be summed up as rude or just plain oblivious drivers.

Ignoramuses who, when it is clearly not their right of way, will force you to swerve (possibly into the kerb) because they do not understand they should give way to oncoming vehicles when overtaking cars that are parked on *their* side of a narrow street. Happens so often, even when you are mid-manoeuvre. Have they never had someone read to them the Highway Code?

4 wheeled drivers that get so close to the back of my scooter or motorcycle that I know for sure that if I came off they'd run right over me and the bike. Are they that desperate to end up in court or can't they see anything that doesn't have 4 wheels or more?

And..

Drivers that try as hard as they can to stop you filtering, common sense and courtesy of both drivers and riders should be the rule.

I was filtering up the M56 last month in the pouring rain, doing approx 15mph and this new Golf pulled left to block the gap, when I went to overtake him he pulled right to block me, he was doing about 3mph. I feinted left and then passed on the right as fell for it, and he sat there with a thousand yard stare not letting on. I wonder what makes these people tick.

I had an absolutely award winning one of those a couple of weeks ago.
I join a dual carriageway and pull into the left hand lane, heading for the roundabout a mile and half away. Car behind me pulls around into the right hand lane and stays there until we get to the roundabout, not catching up with me at all.
At the roundabout, I take the second exit onto another dual carriageway, so does the other car, except they stay in the right lane for another two miles until we reach the next roundabout.
Again, I take the second exit down a slip road onto the A13. So does the other car, except they stayed in the right lane at the roundabout on what was effectively a left turn situation, and suprise suprise, said car stays in the extreme right of the slip road, and when we get on the A13 moves into the outside lane at the earliest opportunity.
And it still hasnt gained a yard on me from when we both joined the same road four miles ago.
We then drive, me in the inside and pulling out to overtake when required, other car in the outside matching my speed (60-70mph), for several miles until we reach the M25/Lakeside turnoff. By this time traffic has built up a bit and I'm at 60mph on the inside lane ready to take the turn for Lakeside and the Dartford Tunnel.
Well I'll be dammned if I dont glance in my mirrors and see the same car, who is now in the outside (3rd) lane, swoop majestically across two lanes of traffic with less than 100 yards to go to get onto the slip road to go to Lakeside.
Unsuprisingly, it then sits in the middle lane at the lights, takes the first left exit and drives up the outside of the slip to get on the M25 heading over the bridge, before deciding at the last moment to move to the inside and head for Lakeside instead.

The car?
Silver BMW 3 5-Series.
The driver?

The driver who sits in a side road waiting to pull out, then spots you 200 yards away. He's still got all the time in the world to pull out without blocking you, but just sits there. Then, when you're about 20 yards away, he decides he can make it after all! pulls out causing you to brake sharply, then pootles up the road at about 20 mph and turns into another side road a quarter mile further on.

Grrr!
What really gets up my nose is ... - FFX-DM
Just thought of another one...

When you see somebody joining the motorway from the slip road so you pull into the middle lane to allow them to join and then they insist on burning up the inside lane and undertaking you so you cannot pull in safely again.

(by the way, my use of the word 'ONLY' in the previous posting was highly ironic - I don't tend to speed through town as knocking down one's neighbours kids often offends!. That's whY I get narked when selfish ***s overtake me)

Talking of pedestrian crossings, a pet hate of mine is there people who wander up to the crossing, oblivious of what is around them, press the button then look up and see there is plenty of time to get across without waiting as the long stream of cars is just far enough away for the lights to have turned red before the first one gets to them.

This, coupled with people who crawl through green lights drastically reducing the number of cars that can get through on one cycle are the main causes of frustration on my daily commute...

Wally, do/have you ever pushed a pram about?

As a father who quite often pushes a pram I usually do not start crossing the road unless either a car has come to a COMPLETE stop or there are no cars around. I am not willing to risk the life of my kid as a result of some misunderstanding between me and a driver wh is apparently slowing down for me.
