Honda CBF600 - Main stand seized - Gregory II

My sister has a Honda CBF650, and the main stand seems to have seized. It will move 1/4 way down, but it won't go any further.

What might be causing this, and what can I do to try and resolve this fault. I have tried lubricating this pivot points with no success

Regards

Greg

Take it off, throw it away and buy a Paddock Stand.

Centre Stands are dangerous as they bottom out onto the road.

If you apply heat (welding torch) it will free it, then dissassemble and fully grease before reassembling.

If you cant access heat, try a lump hammer. That should shift it - Not joking here!

This is what Dealers/shops do.

Good Luck.

Hi

I assume that I apply heat to the bolt and not the whole assembly. I can then dissamble it and perhaps even put it all in a bath of hot parafin, allowing it to all absorb this!

Make sure there is nothing jamming the stand, e.g. a stone, then soak piviots in penetrating fluid and jiggle the stand up and down lots of times until there is full movement.

Lubricate piviots with spray grease regularly and use the stand or it will seize again through lack of use.

Heat and lump hammers will always cause secondary damage in unskilled hands.

I have managed to to get the stand to move more freely, but it won't lift the bike on the main stand. I used a little heat from a blow lamp, but I used penetrating fluid as the primary tool for this.

The pivot bolt seems to simply move around without stopping: I'm assuming the thread has been damaged.

Also, how do I remove the stand: I have located the correct bolt according to the haynes manual, but the rod will not come out. Should I use a drift and hammer it out, or am I missing something here.

Any ideas regarding my previous e-mail. I might be inclined to use a drift to remove the pivot/ shaft that I mentioned, but hope someone can enlighten me.

If the bike is not lifting onto the stand and holding steady then it is likely to be one or several of the following:

1. You have not yet got full movment of the stand, Lift the bike off the ground with blocks under the wheels and keep jiggling the stand until it reaches it's stops, a point just past vertical.

2. The stops are broken, often happens when people sit on the bike when on it's stand. The stand goes way past the vertical point.

3. Someone has cut short the legs of the stand , a quick way to prevent grounding.

Your use of technical terms is somewhat confusing are you getting nut and bolt mixed?

If you must use a blow lamp keep a turned on hosepipe close bye, but I would strongly advise against using heat in that position.

Thanks for your reply. I am getting confused with bolt/nut...I mean bolt:))

I think the stops are broken as you mention. Can this be repaired in any way then?

Pictures of the stand can be viewed on: http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/forum/9/viewthread.php?tid=135913&page=1#pid1147725

I will try to remove it, but I would appreciate advice in the procedure to do this as it doesn't look straightforward to me (as an inexperienced mechanic).

Blow lamps are extremely dangerous. I think penetrating fluid is a better bet, be it heated to help it perhaps absorb better!

Thanks for your reply.

I will try to use a drift to drive it out. Hopefully this will not damage the stand (I hope!).

The pictures are a little too close up, but my comments are:

What is the vertical piece in front of the stand, it's covered in crud and may be a breather pipe. Whatever it is does it foul the stand?

The first marked item is a bolt head and may be a long one going across the stand mounting plates, if it is then there will be a nut on the end of it which will have to be undone before it can be withdrawn. If this is the bolt you say just turns, and does not come out, have you removed the nut?

The last picture shows a hollow shaft, did this have a long bolt with big washers going through it holding it in place? If not then this could be the stand spindle which is pressed in or welded to the side plates, and cannot be removed.

I suggest you just stand back for a minute and see what the problem is, a partly seized stand.

First clean up the whole area so you can see what the cause may be, if the stops are broken or bent you will see it without needing to remove the stand. Lift the bike on blocks, as I suggested before, so you can move the stand to its full movement without having to heave the bike about.

You started with a simple problem go careful you don't destroy the bike by installments.

Good luck

"What is the vertical piece in front of the stand, it's covered in crud and may be a breather pipe. Whatever it is does it foul the stand?"

The vertical piece in front of the stand is the is the gear changing mechanism; it is made up of two parts but doesn't foul the stand at all. I admit it is a little dirty, but I've cleaned it up as much as I can, and will clean it further once I get a chance with the old WD40.

"The first marked item is a bolt head and may be a long one going across the stand mounting plates, if it is then there will be a nut on the end of it which will have to be undone before it can be withdrawn. If this is the bolt you say just turns, and does not come out, have you removed the nut?"

This is not the bolt that is at fault. I wasn't very clear: this is the bolt that seems to allow you to remove the whole stand mechanism. However, it looks like it will remove the side stand as well, which would mean there would be nothing to support the bike on.

"The last picture shows a hollow shaft, did this have a long bolt with big washers going through it holding it in place? If not then this could be the stand spindle which is pressed in or welded to the side plates, and cannot be removed."

This is the shaft that I thought could be removed. If you consider the final picture, the bolt which turns without stopping is the one just above this. When this "bolt" is removed, it seems like the shaft can be removed, as the section around it is secured by this bolt.

I hope I have clarified the situation with you.

I will try the block technique as this makes sense. I will need to wait until I can find someone to help me with it however.

Many thanks for your input.

Picture 4 from locost site: I have removed the bolt that sits on top of the shaft as indicated in picture 4, and it now works. I can't understand why this now works: as standard this bolt is supposed to be there. What would people here recommend me to do now?

Honda CBF600 - Main stand seized - sumpnut

More than likely the bolt is too long.
