Ford Focus II - steering wheel wobble - tracking/balance done - focuskev

Hi all,

I have noticed considerable steering wheel wobble above 50mph and have had the tracking and balancing done on this. I have two entirely different types of tyre tread on each of the tyres - could this be the culprit?.......is it standard that tyres should be fitted in identical pairs and especially front ones.

Any ideas?

99% of all vibration problems are down to the tyres, tracking won't help although balancing should, the fact that the tyres are different shouldn't in itself make a difference, I would suspect that one of your tyres is faulty. Tyres can go out of round due to ply seperation or damage and I would suspect that is your problem, don't discount the rear tyres, they can go out of balance as well.

I agree with Peter N. I had a tyre go out of shape on the rear of my mk1 Focus. The noise and vibration at speed made it sound like a wheel bearing was on its way out. In reality, the tread had a weird "stepped" shape to it, as well as being considerably out of round. This was a quality brand tyre with 6mm of tread left, and no evidence of other damage. No explanation for it. New tyre fitted and all was well.

I have looked at all four tyres and there is nothing obvious concerning 'out of round' I can see. i had balanced the fronts but cannot see any weights attached to the alloys and my rears have different weights clipped to them.

Is this the cause of the problem?

Any decent place will 'stick' balance weights to the inside well of alloys.

You'll have to take the wheel off and have a look at it's backside to see them.

There are weights available that are designed to be clipped on alloy rims, but they probably break the lacquer.

Jack each wheel up just clear of the ground then rotate them and look at the gap, if the tyre is out of true you will see the gap changing.

Try swapping your front and rear alloys - you might just be shifting the problem from the front to the back, but it may stop the steering wheel wobble and give you some clues as to the cause.

The steering wheel wobble I experienced on my old Focus was down to a buckled alloy, which looked fine from the outside and even passed a couple of MOTs, but the flat spot was pretty severe when viewed from the inside and gave a definite bulge to the tyre, which was visible when the wheel was spun.
