Skoda Felicia 1.9d - lezer
Does anyone know of a problem with the 5 speed box in the felicia 1.9d, a relative had to have a replacement box after only 19300m and just after the last full warranty service was carried out

Don't know if it's the VW Golf gearbox, if the car is fitted with the 1.9d VW engine I would imagine that is the case.
Some of my colleagues are putting cogs out of the side of their gearboxes (albeit at 150,000m+), but because their cars are only 2 - 2 1/2yrs old they are getting them replaced under warranty.
I believe VW gearboxes were not their strongest point...

Thanks Dave.
I beleave it is V Dub box
Have you or your colleagues had any 5th gear problems
and unlucky for my relative this one was 1 month out of waranty

Not 5th gear, no. Difficulty engaging 1st (which is usually a clutch problem not gearbox) and (very) occasionally jumping out of 4th, which is probably a chipped tooth on that gear.

Altogether there are 10 of us here running Octavias, W-51 reg, 40,000-200,000 miles. I believe 4 of them have had new 'boxes...

As an aside, the courier chap from Stevenage with the 450,000 mile Golf that VW were all excited about a couple of years ago had, IIRC, no 5th gear from about 200,000m until he fitted a new 'box at nearly 300,000.

As far as I know, Skoda fitted their own gearbox to the Felicia diesel.

Remember the Felicia 1.9d with the Gearbox failure at 19,300mls: not to mention Windscreen & sunroof leaks?
An independant check at 21,170mls revealed a loose Gearbox & Bellhousing & also a weeping crankshaft 0ilseal!!

A taxi driving acquantance of mine is on his 3rd gearbox, He tells me Skoda dealers are blaming a batch of dodgy bearings not helped by some dealers re-newing the wrong bearing when faults surface. He has become quite adept at stripping these boxes.

as ever

Gearbox failure Skoda Felicia 1.9d
This particular Vehicle was bought new after careful consideration given all the hype how good it was and after owning a VW Passat 1.6d for 15 years without any trouble by a relative of mine who on retirement as a lecturer at a Bristol Collage was looking for a car to last long into retirement.
When the 5th gear failed at just over 19,000 miles he was told a replacement box was the only answer and as the warranty was out by 2 months that he would have to pay for it. (In the end Skoda coughed up £200, a fraction of the cost).
The fact is that the gearbox failure was approximatly 1500 miles after the final warranty service which included gearbox oil change, and now 2,000 miles on and takeing it away from the local Skoda dealer it is found to have loose gearbox bolts, two finger tight, and leaking crankshaft oilseal.
I think this is trying to tell us something.

5th gear problems are sometimes due to insufficient gearbox oil to lubricate it...think your skoda dealer has done you :(
