02 1.8 TDCi glow-plug warning light problem - arnold2
OK,
My local garage (non-Ford) has been trying to sort out a problem on my TDCi Focus - namely glow-plug light coming on/engine cutting out.

The fault codes are p1200 - injector/wiring/ecu, and p0251, wiring/injector pump/ecu.

They have tested the Turbo - OK, injectors, again OK, and pump, ok. Also wiring & hoses OK, but a bit warn - done 190k.

So, any ideas anyone! What has happened now since being in the garage was what looked like an oil leak (under engine), but checking the dip-stick all OK, so seems to be when engine on. Could they have not re-connected something related to the injectors properly, or would the engine then just die? Back to garage on Monday but am thinking of going to Ford!

Only other thing I can find is the possibility of a faulty sensor on the throttle switch?
Help!

The same has happened to my tdci focus. It turned out to the the camshaft position sensor. This is the second time i've had this problem. The first time it was the dual mass flywheel. Worth getting both checked out. Hope this helps. Camshaft sensor £25 plus labour. Flywheel and clutch £900 including labour.

The turbo may be ok but have you checked out the actuator also a faulty or clogged up EGR valve cause exactly this problem.

Hi

Any more feedback regarding this?

Just bought a ford focus TDCi 04 with 96k on clock.

I've done about 300 miles with no worries then it cut out after the glow plug light came on today. After restarting, i had no worries for the rest of the journey.

Is this going to prove to be a nightmare?

Hi There,

IT very well could be - sorry!

I had the same thing happen at winter during the very cold snap. The Garage said it was the diesel had got waxy/thick which caused problems with the injectors (still miss firing at some revs) so I would look at changing the fuel filters first before you get to the expensive stuff.

I think my focus needs new injectors now and it's done about 88k, but that's expensive so might just sweat it till it is dead. If you start getting a very bad vibration/tractor engine sounding problem, that is the DMF or dual Mass Fly wheel going and costly to fix. Poor starting is common on these cars and has plauged my one from when I bought it at 60k on the clock. I am convinced my for dealer was not changing parts that they said they were...but I did not mark anything prior to it going in so this is a theory - not a fact.

I think I have injectors that leak air back. Another thing you could do if you do change the fuel filters is change the inline cheapo fuel filter with a clear one which you can see if any air bubbles going through.

I like the Focus and they don't use oil like the Audi/VW engines, but they seem to be tuned almost too well and have problems as a result.

Let me know how you get on.

Good Luck!

JYD
