04 2.0tdi Cooling fan - jls
I have an A3 2.0 tdi. The cooling fanstays unless I disconnect the battery, I have disconnected what I believe to be the cooling sensor (between battery box and engine),
but the fan just keeps going. I believe there must be a relay some where that operates the fan and would be grateful to know where to look plus any other suggestions.
There was a faint small of electrical burning that possibly is a relay but no fuses have blown.

The engine cooling fan control module is built into the fan itself - where it will never get wet.....

Pull Maxi fuse 54 [50A] in the engine-bay fusebox to disable both the fan and module.

screwloose:
There is a maxi fuse 52 and 53 but no fuse in position 54, handbook quotes this as
'radiater fan output stage' however not installed in this car.

Have you got more than one fan - I took it from your initial post that there is just the one?

If you have two; then you'll have to unbolt the 80A block fuse in position 3 of the power distribution plate under the engine fuse box.

Try removing fuse 8 in the engine box first; that feeds the cooling fan module circuitry - just not the fan motor itself.

Screwloose,
MAGIC!
Yes I have 2 fans (o/s one was not running) and yes the other (main ) fan has stopped with the removal of the fuse.
Question: I take it the fan that is continually running is actually kaput or is there a service item in it?
thanks for the info.

screwloose,
ps fuse 8 did notmake any difference which is why I went looking for a relay ofsome sort.

The fan and it's control module are one unit AFAIK. It's likely that water has got in to the module and the internal relays have stuck on and melted - hence depowering the module itself didn't work.

Check with Audi for separate parts availability - if you're lucky; the last one of those I fitted on a Golf was over £300 for the pair of fans as one unit.

Screwloose,
Thanks again for all the info, I will post again after I sort out the part(s) and let you now the result.
would the car run on the second fan for the moment if I remove the faulty one?

If the cooling module in that fan has gone; probably not, as it controls both.

Screwloose,
I have removed the fan and stripped the motor to reveal 2 burnt out power transistors,
I will try and find a replacement fan ass.

Useful to know; I don't get the time to investigate what's inside - VAG are getting a bit keen if they're using transistors to power a big fan.

hi did you find these in the big fan ?
