There are a couple of adverts where a car in question doesn't seem to be quite real, i.e. I can't pin it down to a make/model. Do the advert makers take a real car and alter the exterior to make a anonymous looking car so not to upset the real manufacturer?
The first one is for the Renault Scenic where the wife and kids get all excited, then discover it's the car parked behind that the husband/dad has bought...and they are not impressed. I can't work out what the car behind really is, it looks a small MPV but which one? The other is the Direct Line insurance advert with the bricks falling on the car, something about the grill says Volvo to me, but the rest of the car doesn't.

It's the recognizable cars in adverts for breakdown services that tickle me: they're almost always from the low-status Asian makers (if they'll forgive me for lumping them together like that), and I suspect it's done that way on purpose. I can't imagine Volkswagen or Mercedes-Benz taking kindly to having their reputations for peerless reliability impugned like that.

I think that may be a E36 BMW with a Volvo grille.

That's some act of vandalism in the bricks on car advert isn't it? That's how they describe the cover associated with it.
"Oh, I know, we'll vandalise that blokes car by dropping a ton of housebricks on it!".
Or am I just lucky where I live.

That looks a lot like a MK1 Mondeo Ultima - I owned one in the same colour and my kids were understandably paranoid about exposed supermarket car parks for a while afterwards....
The UFO is a 1998 series 3 low level Solar System class scout sports hatch by the way :-)

The advert for the Ford Mondeo (I think?) where all the cars float away on balloons uses slightly disguised old Fords.
I think there was a Peugeot advert a few years ago where the new Peugeot owner speeds past lots of old cars that were broken down, all Peugeots....

There is indeed something mildly irritating about deliberately unidentifiable cars in advertisements.
But does no one apart from me remember sixties Rootes Group ads in which 'artists' impressions' were used to make the cars look bigger than they really were by populating and surrounding them with happy, smiling semi-midgets?
At least one American car maker used the same technique for ages. It might have been Nash, which had a penchant for the naff, but it might have been Chrysler which later took over the Rootes Group. While one can understand the technique being used to make a Hillman Imp seem more tempting to an unwary punter, it is hard to understand why anyone would have thought it necessary with the average sixties American car.

That reminds of a true story about a bloke I knew who went to look at the show-house on a new estate and made the developer an offer for the show-house complete with all the furniture it had in it.
Only when he moved in did he realise that all the sofas, beds, everything was about 80% normal size to make the rooms look bigger.
Er, I think he drove there.

I like the monster truck on the identity theft/credit card adverts. A proper genuine pick-up truck with huge wheels and not those awful scaffolding jobs with fibreglass bodies made to look like trucks.

A recent/current newspaper ad has a VW Passat stuck in a traffic jam. I guess VW did not like that and this weekend's version had the rear wing of a car carefully planted over the same picture to cover the VW badge.

There's an insurance advert with a young girl driving a new red Passat with her dad in the passenger seat. I assume that he's teaching her to drive then he gets out and clouts the lamp post with the passenger door.
They both laugh (I'm sure I would if I did that to my new Passat) but even more remarkably she managed to use the manual handbrake (I thought the new Passat had a button handbrake).
Bit sad that I actually picked it up.
