To sell or scrap the '95 Fiesta? - Waino
As we know the old Fiesta will need some welding before it would pass its imminent MoT test, we had more or less decided to scrap it. Friends have, however, suggested that we ought to try selling it on e-bay. I'm not sure if it would be worth the trouble, but I wonder if anyone here could advise on the likely cost of using e-bay to sell a low value car?

A failure to sell the car within the next 10 days or so will result in the expiry of its tax, MoT and insurance. After that, would it still be legally OK to tow it to the nearest scrap yard? [although I know that the safest way would be to drive it there!]

Thanks Waino

No; if any wheel is on the road, then it must be taxed and MOT'd.

Any small car in good running order with a ticket is worth a few hundred quid even in Autotrader.

Have you looked into the cost of the welding?

The welding will be a couple of hundred quid (I can't do it myself). It is due its annual service and all tyres are only just legal for tread (the 5th is down to its cords). I know about the welding requirement as it was an 'advisory' last year. Of course, I don't know about anything else that the MoT test might uncover.

I'd worked out that, because I can't do the work, the total 'mechanical' cost of keeping the car on the road for another year could be approaching £500. We've just bought a fractionally younger Corsa, but in much better nick with 70K miles (as opposed to 115K) from a relative for £600.

Stick it on Ebay for spares or repair on a 5 day auction, insist upon collection within 48 hours, I bet you get £50 - £100 for it.

It's likely to cost you about £7 in Ebay fees, don't forget to take as many pics as possible, they always help you to fetch a higher price!

my local scrappy will give you £100 for cars dead or alive and he'll pick them up too. A week or so later the scrapped notice pops through your letter box - no hassles.

I sold a tidy but Sorned and out of MoT 94 Skoda Favorit on Ebay for £114, guy came with cash, took the keys and drove off without even looking at the off side of the car.

I was amazed - and even more so when he said he was a trader.

I advertized a 2cv that needed serious welding to pass an MOT-man came round and said"Would I accept £xx fot it"-as this was three times what I would have been willing to accept, you can guess my answer.

I scrapped a 1996 Astra 3 weeks ago and got £80 for it by weight even though the car was very driveable. Back brakes kept failing MOT brake balance test and at £100 a time for a cylinder it just wasn't worth it (timing belt was due at 160k). Took it to a proper breaker who took the V5C from me but had run out of whatever the other form is that he should have issued. He promised to send it on to DVLA for me. What form does he mean and who should I receive the scrapped notice from (him of DVLA)? I've since notified DVLA that I've disposed of the car via a scrap merchant and sent copy of the receipt to prove it.

If you have the inclination it is often cheaper to buy a second hand good MIG welder and go on a car welding evening course (£100+£60 maybe) then you can keep your car on the road and maybe earn extra cash from your mates.

My Dad's in this position with an old Clio - my Mum is convinced it must be worth something as it's only done 45K miles.
But the MOT is about to expire, and it's been a battle to get it through for the last few years, and tax runs out. It's a rusty heap.

Mum wondered if we (with teenage kids) might know a learner who would be interested ! Well, I certainly let my kids within a million miles of it.

I too was quite surprised that a scrappy will come and collect AND pay £100 for it, but they will.

The last time one of my mates scrapped a car he only got £35 for it (Pug 306) and he had to tow it in himself, this was about 2 years ago though so I don't know if things have changed since then.

two years ago I got £100 each for a dead '93 Uno 1 litre and a '84 Mini that I'd 'always meant to do up' It was so rusty the subframes had gone through the bodyshell but I still got the money and they came and collected them from 20 miles away. Once I've finished swapping bits from the dead Previa to the 'new' one I'll get £100 for it too.

Thanks for the input, chaps.

I've rung a few local scrappies. The first offered £25, the second - nothing but the third offered £30 and said that he would collect on a lorry. The last offer is interesting because it would allow me time to try and sell the car beyond the point where the MoT etc expired.

I'm intrigued to hear about offers of around £100. I'm in East Anglia/Suffolk - any of you guys know of any dealers in this region who would better £30?

He didn't seem keen on the idea to have it delivered. He said that they would collect the car from the house on a lorry. I should have questioned him further on this - I suppose I was taken by the fact that he had offered £5 more than the previous chap and would collect.

Assuming that scarp cars are at the lower end, then no-one will pay £100 for a scrap car and then sell the contents of it at £60/tonne.

Advert in my local paper states "minimum £20". This is possibly more realistic than £100?! Of course for a recent model in fairly good condition they'll give vastly more than £20, but for a 12y/o Fiesta made mainly of rust, I doubt you'd get much.

if i had a "recent model in fairy good condition " the last place i would be taking it to would be a scrapyard........EBAY

eBay's the right way to go. Do a search for Fiesta completing listings with max price £150. Look at the listings with prices in green where the car theoretically sold for up to that price, even without a test. Be honest in the listing and state it was an advisory for welding. Someone will buy it for more than a scrappy will give you. Best get it on soon to allow anyone to drive it back legally (although a large proportion of buyers might not be bothered).

Thanks to all who suggested eBay as a viable route to take - this proved to be the case.

As the car had a scrap value of £30 and the eBay fees would be about £30, I put in an opening bid of £30, with a reserve of £60. Five days later, the car reached £155 and a trader came to collect it - no hastle at all. I believe the buyer was going to carry out the necessary repairs (for far less than the welding would have cost me) and sell it as a beginner's car.

I wonder how many cars are sold as 'scrap' but end up being out on the road again.

If bad bodywork is the main reason for the MOT failure and the car is scrapped - many competent persons with welders can earn extra money for several evening's work buying these cars and repairing them. Obviously the limit is the amount of cars you can buy and sell in a year.
But my brother in law used to do this and a guy down may street does it. Some botch it, but many do a decent job and there are lots of students / young motorists out there who are happy to buy these sort of cars once repaired.

Apologies, chaps, I've just re-read the post. Thanks, of course, to EVERYONE who expressed an opinion on this thread.
