That's hilarious.
But, 80kph in reverse??? HOW? What manufacturer builds in a top speed of 50mph in reverse gear?
Ford, evidently. Amazing.

Years ago when DAF's with the variomatic transmission were around they would go just as fast in reverse as forward; I heard of someone writing his off at 70mph backwards proving this.

The bit about swerving all over the road makes sense - rear steering is fundamentally unstable, I'm amazed he managed to go so fast.

never had a problem with it on a reach forklift!
|
It's possible that the reach forkilft has a sprung rack, pushing the steering back on centre.
If you reverse a car, and take your hands off the wheel, it won't be long before the steering slews on to full lock, one way or the other, as opposed to forward motion, where self-centreing works properly.

What an idiot though, leaving a major town to embark on a 300+ mile journey with no forward gears. Have to say that 50mph figure is impressive, i thought it would be more like 30mph.
|
Bet that was a sight to see. What with it being down-under, it was probably an automatic which usually have taller bottom ratios than manuals. Considering reverse is usually the same ratio as first, this could explain the seemingly high speed (although even I think 50mph is stretching the truth a bit). Either way, I can't imagine his engine lasting much longer, traveling flat out backwards, as there will be no in-rush of air to the radiator. How he didn't 'cook' his engine too, I will never know.

The main problem was the constant stop-starting, putting stress on the clutch.
He ended up having terrible kangaroo starts.
All I can do is apologise for that one really.
|
But why he didn´t just koala taxi is beyond me.
I´ll get me coat.

Echidna help myself with that last gag.

I hope you have a thousand redbacks in your jim jams tonight for that little lot BM.
