Asbestos - Adam {P}
Is it's use in everything in the UK now banned? If so, when did the ban come into effect - I'm having a quick browse as we speak but I just want a definitive answer.

Thanks,

Adam

ban came in to effect in december 1999 according to hse website

Depends on the type of asbestos and the application, certain types are still used in construction AFAIK. Beyond that I am no expert.

It's use in construction, if not specifically banned, is made extremely difficult by all the warranties and so on. Key phrase is deleterious materials.

BBD has it neatly summed up. I have to pay £3000 plus to get a smallish boxing removed from a building i'm demolishing. Very tempting to just rip it out, but it's not worth the hassle if you get caught.
Asbestos - Big Bad Dave
I read something a few weeks ago, might have been in Focus magazine, I can't remember. Something about the irony of asbestos - it's actually perfectly safe in the way that it's used in buildings - it's the subsequent removal and breaking up of the stuff that causes it to be dangerous.
Asbestos - Adam {P}
Thanks for the advice.

Reason I ask is - my mate moved into a house a few months back - 1940's Semi with a massive garage at the back but they're having it knocked down and need the asbestos blokes in. (They know it has asbestos in - presumably from the survey). Anyway, one of the blokes was talking to my mate saying loads of stuff today has asbestos in such as artex! (I'd heard that before) but my mate had some posters in clip frames with what looked like wooden backing boards that got shoved in the garage when they moved and the bloke reckoned they probably had asbestos in too.

I couldn't believe it myself but I was just curious whether poster frames you'd have in your house did have it in or whether the bloke was trying to get more money to "dispose" of them.

I said I'd ask on here anyway,

Thanks again,

Adam

Asbestos disposal is a huge scaremongering scam. Not all asbestos is dangerous, SFAIK white asbestos is OK when in sheets or panels but is or can be dangerous if cut or drilled ie dust is generated. Your friend needs expert advice and NOT from someone who is trying to make money out of him by talking up the risk!
Asbestos - Altea Ego
the problem with handling asbestos is getting rid of it,

You cant just take it down the dump, and if you litter the local layby with it, you will be hunted down like a dog.

Our LA tip has been taking asbestos for as long as I can remember, but admitedly if I turned up tomorrow with a van full of broken up corrogated sheeting then it may raise an eyebrow or two!

I can't believe the backing boards to the clip frames contain asbestos. I presume when you say "shoved in the garage when they moved" you mean your mate? These firms seem to think that no-one was aware of the dangers of asbestos before 1999 and that it was still being used in everything before then!

Also see this advice from a *random* council re. disposal of asbestos www.cannockchasedc.gov.uk/site/scripts/documents_i...2

  • Wet the area before you start to dismantle the infected material
    and continue to do so throughout the process or if the material is
    accidentally damaged

  • Carefully dismantle the material - do not smash or break it up

  • Do not use power tools to dismantle - including power saws and drills

  • The asbestos should be double bagged an clearly labelled
  • Disposal should be to the appropriate skip at the local asbestos disposing tip -
    it is free of charge where the waste has arisen at a domestic premises

  • When the work is complete - great care should be taken in tidying up the area

  • Also see www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg289.pdf and note that "work with asbestos insulation, asbestos coatings and asbestos insulating board must normally be carried out by an HSE-licensed contractor". A very useful leaflet IMHO.

    Adam,
    Have a look at this article.
    www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006...l
    Christopher Booker in the Sunday Telegraph has been conducting a long campaign about the general term "asbestos" when only the blue and brown types are dangerous. White asbestos, as used in Artex etc is (apparently) a different mineral
    (quote:- "What lies behind the "asbestos scam" is a deliberately engineered confusion between the genuinely dangerous "blue" and "brown" forms of asbestos and the much commoner white asbestos, which is a wholly different mineral.")

    and recent law changes have meant that it does not require removal by licensed contractors (allegedly!).
    I hasten to add that I know little about this but have taken a vague interest since smashing up an old "asbestos" garage about 20 years ago and being very worried about the potential effects!
    If you Google "Booker asbestos" there is quite a lot about it (some articles refuting his assertions, though the law change would seem to back up his views)

    Did you get my email by the way?

    There is an HSE publication determining generic risk assessments for removal of Asbestos.

    Provided these are adhered to for dismantling and removal then it should be perfectly safe to do it yourself. I have a copy of this somewhere. It can be bought for around £10 IIRC.

    A few years ago I was involved in the dismantling and removal of an asbestos shed. We used plenty of water when cutting or unscrewing bolts to keep the dust down and also used p3 face masks and one piece disposable suits.

    We then dismantled the sides on the ground and loaded the sheets into my old van lined with dust sheets. You could also use a van that's about to be scrapped. In my case the van was soon to be disposed of but I didn't know that at the time ;)

    At the main tip in Plymouth they allowed us to dispose of the asbestos into what they call a bonded skip. Everything from the back of the van went in there from the asbestos to the dust sheets that lined the van and the van was swept out thourally. I think I may have chucked out the broom as well.
    Asbestos - deepwith
    Every area has to have one dump authorized to take asbestos (boiler flues etc) Ring the local council to find the designated tip. Bag it in plastic , label it and take it to the right tip - with advice we have just disposed of a garage over a few weeks using local facility.

    I have been in the picture framing business for nearly 30 years and to my knowledge asbestos has never been used in any form in my industry. Backing materials in clip frames of all types is either mdf or hardboard, so this "expert" bloke was trying it on.

    Dishwashers - installation tip - Gromit {P}
    A tip, to follow on from Hawkeye's dishwasher question in IHAQ 145:

    Hawkeye has a parquet floor fitted to the kitchen where the dishwasher is to be installed, making access under the counter harder. I had a similar problem with a tiled floor - the tiling stopped at the edge of the gap where the appliance was to go, foring a lip that was awkward to pull the machine over if I needed to remove it.

    Solution: get plain tiles of the same thickness as those already on the floor, and tile the gap before installing the appliance. Much easier to get in and out. For a wooden floor, I'd still suggest tiling up to the level of the floor - the extra advantage is that, if the machine springs a small leak, tiles won't be damaged before you can fix it. SWMBO's parents installed their dishwasher on a semi-sold floor and have already had to repair it twice due to minor leaks after the appliance was installed.
    Which type of Cycling is best? - BobbyG
    Not sure if there is a correct answer to this one. Been out on my pedal bike quite a bit lately to try and get fit and lose weight. I want to try and reduce my waistline! Now I know that there are better ways of doing this than cycling but I like being out on my bike.

    My question is, which is the best way to cycle to lose weight

    a. Keep it in a higher gear than I would normally be in to really make my legs push ;

    or

    b. Keep it in a lower gear than normal so that I am pedalling faster than I should be at that speed

    or

    c. Keep it in the gear that feels most comfortable!
    Which type of Cycling is best? - cheddar
    C. and ride a bit further because you are comfortable.
    Which type of Cycling is best? - Armitage Shanks {p}
    I am, at a very late stage and rather too late, doing a 3 month "Get Fit for Life" Course! This involves modules on Exercise, Diet and Stress Management. Walking and easy cycling are good for your joints and mobility, neither will do much to help you lose weight; that comes from a balance between intake of food (calories) and energy expenditure. The greater benefit from exercise comes when it is a bit more energetic, leaving you slightly out of breath and slightly sweaty; this will exercise and strengthen your cardio-vascular system and this is a good thing!
    Which type of Cycling is best? - Bromptonaut
    The energy required to move distance x at speed y is a constant and is unnafected by gearing, so it's a question of technique and beating the risk of injury. . Aim for a pedal rpm of 60+ as a minimum, more like 80 on the open road (the technical term for pedal rpm is cadence). Pushing a high gear is poor technique and results in knee injury in surprisingly short order. Given that most riders gear too high I'd say b is the correct choice but c is OK as well.

    Riding at a speed that just has you breathing hard is excellent cardio-vascular exercise, probably help you loose weight as well, so long as you dont reward your efforts with a pint!
    Which type of Cycling is best? - wemyss
    Bromptonaut is quite right. Racing cyclists such as the Tour De France men train always using low gears with a high cadence speed. Otherwise their knees would be worn out.
    Its only in races where they use the big gears. Have stopped in Spain to watch the teams train and their cadence is remarkably high.
    I learnt this from an early age riding with a friend who was a top man and even today at my advanced age still cycle 50 mile per week with no knee problems.
    Might well be worth buying one of those heart monitors and keeping your heart rate at the reccomended level for your age and fitness level. They are very cheap nowadays.
    Which type of Cycling is best? - Statistical outlier
    Agre with the above. Bear in mind though that the body can't burn fat above a fairly low exercise threshold. If you're out of breath, you're not actually burning fat there and then, you're running on glycogen. Only when that runs out (and you hit the wall or 'bonk' in bike speak (wonder if thet will survive the swear filter) are you burning fat.

    Normal walking burns fat directly, and you can use a heart rate monitor to stay in that zone durig other exercise as well (although on a bike you'll be going so slowly you'll die of boredom). I'd advise to get fitter by cycling at a high (60-80 rpm) cadence, and let your increased metabolic rate and reduced food intake gradually reduce your weight.
    Which type of Cycling is best? - Xileno {P}
    If your priority is to lose wait, then I recommend the following:

    1. Take up walking

    2. Give up coffee (affects your digestion)

    3. Be careful what you eat as some foods digest more quickly than others and conflict with each other (loads of books written on this and probably loads of stuff on the internet)

    4. Take up swimming.

    5. Eat less!!

    I'm quite big (and ugly) and it's worked for me.
    Which type of Cycling is best? - Adam {P}
    X's advice seems sound. At least in terms of losing weight.

    Me and my mate both weigh around (or did) 16 and a half stone. I'm 6ft 5 and he's 6ft 3.

    About 2 months ago, we both stopped eating crap food - not eating at Maccies or Burger King or anything like that. He watches what he eats more than I do (I still have unhealthy food such as cheeseburgers! - but they were homemade!) but by and large we've cut a lot of the crap out. I still eat the same amounts whereas he's cut down a fair bit on his portions.

    I weigh just over 16 now with him weighing just over 15 and a half. He goes to the gym once a week (but this can be patchy) and I do no exercise at all really.

    So if we can lose that much doing nothing at all, imagine what you can do if you take up walking, give up coffee (I'm drinking one right now!) and take up swimming!
    Which type of Cycling is best? - Xileno {P}
    Adam, you need to lose the weight now. It gets much harder the older you get. Although I expect your BMI is ok if you're that tall.

    I'm pretty trim all in all but I do get a bit paunchy after a few bbqs. Rather than exercise I prefer to hold it in. I can hold it in for my entire walk to work - 15 mins, although I do get a bit light-headed if I walk too slowly.

    I really want to buy a bike, but I want one of those low-riders you see in rap videos or the Ian Brown video in which he rides it from China Town to Soho. I can't imagine they're any good for working out and I'd be afraid to get it dirty but man would I look cool or what?

    Thanks for your replies guys, tried abit of all 3 today and found that when physically pedalling faster with it in a lower gear than I should have been in, I was running the risk of my feet slipping off the pedals more. So its off to the bike shop tomorrow to get some toeclips which I have been promising myself for a while.....

    Also, as per some comments, as well as exercising I am also dieting. The diet thats meats one day and carbohydrates the next. Lost half a stone since I came back from holiday (ok I know much of that will just be recovering from the fortnight eating/drinking binge). I have set myself a target of getting down from 14st 2lb to 13stone dead. My reward for doing that will be a new digi camera. If I then get down to 12 and a half stone my reward is PDA with GPS Sat Nav on it. So whenever you see a question on here about "what camera or PDA" do you recommend, then you will know its worked. However if there is one about elasticated trousers then it hasn't!

    On a slightly different note, whilst out on bike today I was approaching a traffic island . Three huge tipper trucks came past me in very close succession. However the third one passed just as I had approached the island and there was not enough room for me and him so, thankfully, there was a lowered kerb and I ended up on the pavement. It was sheer stupid driving, he was blindly following the rear of the 2nd lorry and had not a clue as to what obstructions were up ahead.

    A neighbour has queried a fence position in relation to a boundary. We believe the fence in question is in roughly the right place, but it replaced an old fence that had been up for several years.

    I am told by the Land Registry that a declaration from the previous owners would be very useful in this respect, should this go to dispute. I would like them to confirm that the old fence was in the correct place, which I believe they would be willing to do.

    Can this declaration take the form of a letter or does it need to take on board a particular format - such as that of a deed or similar?

    Also, does its signing by the previous owners need to be witnessed?

    Apologies. Based on the answers I assumed you were after a hard drive rather than DVD disk TV recorder...:-(

    PS

    Having had another look at the link, I don't see why you can't connect your TV aieral feed to it via a Freeview set top box - that's no different to a very common STB - VCR - TV set combintion with both the STB and VCR having twin Scart sockets and RF inputs/outputs.

    You may have to "tune" the set top box's output to one of the recorder's channels to allow recording of Freeview programmes. The VCR's TV aerial output is then carried on to the TV set with a second coaxial lead.

    You would have to check out the input/output sockets provided on this machine to see if it's possible.

    By the way, neither Medion or Tevion (one of its brand names) actually manufacture products. They are all rebadged goods from specialist manufacturers, Medion being a major German distributor of a range of products.

    >>Sorry that link isn't working but I take it you are saying for the new digital era it will be out of date very quickly? If not already?

    Pretty much; if I was spending 100 notes plus on TV related stuff these days I'd want built in Freeview with an EPG, on the other hand if you're happy with analogue channels and the possibility of maybe being able to control an external Freeview box then this Aldi job looka pretty good value.

    Personally at this point in time I'd buy a Freeview PVR with HDD like the Thomson DHD4000 ( available from Argos until recently for 100 quid) or Humax 9200T ( 200 quid but alloows transfer of recordings toa PC for burning) and a seperate DVD recorder.

    >>or Humax 9200T ( 200 quid but alloows transfer of recordings toa PC for burning) and a seperate DVD recorder.>>

    Humax is an excellent brand (Korean manufacturer) but the 9200 is cheaper than you state.

    As an aside, its F2 Fox-T Freeview set top box has been around for at least a couple of years and is still regarded as one of the best of its type on the market.

    Any Freeview receiver should be able to also provide the EPG facility as its part of the system/service.

    I have acquired a mountain bike. As I don't want to lose it straight away, I would appreciate advice on good locks and chains.

    Kryptonite look very sound, but are expensive. Motor Cycle News did a test some time ago, which found they weren't all they are cracked up to be.

You now have security - ability to attach to any convenient street furniture - no necessity to remove front wheel. Drawback = weight plus you really need a saddlebag to carry it. Not very cool these days:-))

    Bull in a china shop - who pays ? - Anglesey Ian
    We've all been in those gift shops which have a variety of signs but which all basically warn of the same thing - that if merchandise is accidentally damaged or broken, then you are responsible for payment.

    Is this enforceable by law in the event of a genuine accident ?

    What happens if you refuse to pay ?

    Can you walk out of the shop after having accidentally broken an ornament etc ?

    I just gots to know !

    Bull in a china shop - who pays ? - mfarrow
    You are only obliged to pay what the shop paid for the item, i.e. with commision taken off.

    This is why most large chains, particularly with smaller items, will let any breakages slip, as it would be too much hassle for them to find out the price they paid through their distribution network. Also it might stir up bad press.

    Bull in a china shop - who pays ? - hxj

    The signs are meaningless. You do not have to pay anything.

    If the shop chose to sue you they would have to demonstrate that you acted negligently, and that negligence caused them a loss.

    If you pick something up and drop it they might have a chance of a claim. If you nudge a precarious display in an overcrowded shop then different kettle of fish.

    Well sort of................................

    To cut a long story short, I am trying to track down the husdand of my late mother. After the funeral etc. we have only seen him once, and then he seemed to disapear off the planet.

    How do I find out where in the country he could be living?

    We have tried tracing him, through his old employer, but he no longer works for them. We have been doing a bit of surfing around the subject of electoral registers, but it is getting very confusing, and all the sites want payment to gain access to what might turn out to be a dead end.

    Any help on how to go about this would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

    Whats a reverse search? we have done a search on 192, but they wanted £15 for the first part of the search, which appeared to give a possible lead, but then wanted another £170 odd to get any details, but they were old and could very possible be a dead end.

    Thanks for the responses so far

    A reverse search is where you have a telephone number, but nothing else. One of the electorial roll searches is probably your first port of call,

    You could try Google Answers (www.answers.google.com/answers/ ) or, alternatively, keying in as much as you know about the particular person's full name, where he lived and anything else you can that is relevant.

    Just as a test try keying in your own name and town or name and postcode into Google - you will be surprised just how much information turns up.

    Even trying the council where he lived or the Post Office, who may have been requested to forward mail, might help although I would presume that the Data Protection Act might stop some or all information being passed on.

    TVM - I thought 192.com had been banned from allowing the reverse search facility?

    Ali, I've got free credits on the 192 site so if you want you can email me the details and I'll have a go. You could also try writing to the local papers in the area he was last living in saying you're trying to trace him and could anyone with details please get in touch. It's very hard to actually disappear these days, so I'm sure you'll get there eventually.

    Finding a missing person? - No FM2R
    Actually go to where he worked. It is extremely unlikely that at least one colleague doesn't have some knowledge as to where he went.

    Also, check at the last known address for forwarding addresses - also best done in person.

    Any knowledge of bank details will help, usually they will forward a letter on for you.

    Check any remaining junk mail at last known - sometimes you will find either a different name or a differently spelled name. Check also for format - with/without initials etc. It all helps with a search. Also check what the junk mail is. i.e. Company X will continue to send junk mail to an address for some time after you have moved out of it - usually because different lists are maintained. So if you see junk mail from a relatively easy organisation you can check whether or not they have a forwarding address.

    The postman often knows where and when. Also a visit to the local pub can help. Have a chat with the neighbours.

    You can find a lot out electronically these days, but if you really want to find someone, then you need to leave your armchair I'm afraid.

    Old area telephone numbers - artful dodger {P}
    Hi Adam

    I think you are way out, I thought it was in the 1950's. That was why I was seeking confirmation. The number would have been quoted as Museum 1234 in London. I know later that Museum would have been converted to a 3 digit number. I am looking for when this change happened.

    Any one else help?

    I am dreadfully sorry Roger - I misunderstood what you meant.

    I thought you meant when area codes got a 1 in them - so 051 became 0151, 0744 became 01744.

    I was out by just a fair bit wasn't I?!

    Please can someone identify a good mobile phone for me. I know nothing about these things. At the moment I have a Nokia of some sort, bought about 6 years ago but the display seems to have gone very dim. If I shake it then it seems to get brighter for a few minutes so I guess it's time to get rid.

    My requirements are:

    1. It must work in UK & France.

    2. It must be PAYG and I'm happy with T-Mobile

    3. I am not interested in flip-up screens, playing games or surfing the web.

    4. I don't know anything about blue tooth so I guess I don't need one of those whatever it is.

    5. I like a long stand by (is that the right term, the length of time before the battery runs out.)

    6. I would like to keep the cost to £100 or less.

    Thank you for your advice and excuse the lack of technical understanding.

    Do it the other way around;

    Rather than deciding which phone you want and then trying to get a good deal, go down the local phone shop and see what they've got on offer or on sale.

    Anything you buy will work int he UK and France. Other than that you only want voice. Standby on voice only dual band phones is much of a muchness so isn't worth worryiing about as a selection criteria - it really only come sinto its own on advanced function devices.

    Something without a camera will probably be what you want.

    Sometimes, it is just the conductive rubber strips between the pcb and the lcd which fail - these can be had for pence, and usually aren't a big job to fit. If your existing phone is otherwise OK for your needs, why not try to mend it?

    Nokia's are built like a sandwich. ie two slices of bread and a filling. T6 torx screws go from onelayer of bread, throught the filling into the other layer of bread.

    YOu need to get a T6 torx screwdriver, seperate the layers of sandwich, clean the contact pads on the PCBs and reassemble.

    eh voila, working nokia.
