I put about a cupful of vx "old" blue antifreeze in my 03 vectra 2.0 dti, which has pink longlife af in it by mistake, i emptied the header tank within 5 mins, drove to the dealer for the right stuff and refilled it, but will the small amount thats in there do any damage long term?. Thanks
|
No.
The only reason its wrong is the colour. Would still work ok, may be an odd colour if it mixed. But no problems long term.

Although there are some types of new 'pink' antifreeze that absolutely must not be mixed with any trace of the old blue stuff I don't think this is the case with the VX stuff, indeed I've just checked a bottle of it and it has none of the dire warnings about mixing types hat appear on the pink in the local motor factors.

It says on Vauxhall Technical Information System not to mix the longlife with any other colour antifreeze, it says the newer longlife is all they do now and can be put in older Vauxhalls (with a few listed exceptions) but ALL TRACES OF THE OLD ANTIFREEZE MUST BE FLUSHED OUT.
This would suggest to me they think it's nad to mix, I have read on other forums that they tend to leave deposits like brown scale in the cooling system if mixed.

I wouldn't worry, its sounds as if you did the most sensible thing by draining out what you could. I'm sure a small trace of the 'old stuff' in the new longlife coolant won't do any harm, its not like its a 50/50 mix.

Thanks all, put my mind at rest, apparently its ready mixed now as well, no need to add water, just pour it in.

It says on Vauxhall Technical Information System ............ but ALL TRACES OF THE OLD ANTIFREEZE MUST BE FLUSHED OUT.
Sloppy wording. Vauxhall should be aware that it is impossible to flush out all traces of the old antifreeze.

...and whilst their at it change the labelling on the containers, which as I previously stated doesn't mention anything about not mixing.
|
Gone from antifreeze to coolant ! We have had this topic before too, but mustnt mix because its the same er i mean different, with a colour in it and distilled water!
|
|
Their parts never have instructions though!
You have to buy them seperately!
