I have a problem with the ignition switch ,when you have pulled the key out and the centre barrell springs out for the steering lock .when you put the key back in to start the car the ignition key fails to turn without a lot of fiddling about.if i stop the barrell springing out there is no problem,i would be grateful for any remedies....

i answered a very similar question the other week and my answer then as now is a little duck oil.
If that fails due to "worn components" then get a new barrel made up at your dealer is the best solution...

If it continues doing it, it's giving you advance warning the barrell will need replacing. Believe me when I say it's far easier to change the barrell while you're still able to turn the key.

Unfortunately not. All I know is that you need the key in the barrel, and turned, to do the job though. I've seen mention of it on another forum. If I come across it, I'll post the link (unless someone else posts the info beforehand)

Oh dear......
Having never personally removed a vectra ignition barrel i didnt answer but have looked at the site DD has directed and the first thing i read is take off the steering wheel...........with an airbag.......
oh dear ........no safety procedures no nothing,very very unsafe advice.
If it is like corsa"s and astra"s then you should be able to remove the steering column shroud and not need to touch the steering wheel turn the ignition barrel to position 1? find the metal spring that stick up push this in with a suitable tool and the barrel will come out.....
DO NOT touch the ignition circuit till barrel has been replaced as you risk jamming lock in housing if you dont know what you are doing......
Suggest you get new barrel from vauxhall to fit your "chipped key" before you start any dismantling
sensible update just given to me pre spouting..............make sure steering wheel not in straight ahead position in case steering lock comes on and then you will double struggle to get barrel in
its a five minute job by the way..........sorry if ive made it sound constipated..
if steering wheel does need to come off its definately a garage job due to the airbag issues and also you will need a correct puller

The ignition barrel comes out easily.
1. Remove the steering column cover
2. Insert the key and turn to ignition on position
3. insert the end of a coat hanger or ⅛ welding rod in the small hole on the side of the housing
4. Hey presto, you're holding the barrel and key in your hand.
Re-fitting is just as simple. You'll notice a lug on the top of the barrel which you'll be able to collapse when the key is in a certain position. This is what you put the ⅛ welding rod in for. Just make sure that the barrel and the ignition switch are aligned when you re-fit it or it will not go in. Depending on whether the lug collapses in position I or II will decide what position the ignition switch needs to be in.
You will need to put your old transponder chip in the new key for the engine to start. The transponder receiver fits onto the barrel and you do not need to replace or re-program it.

sorry to be a pain rail road but could tell me where this small hole is as I cannot see one only one near the shroud screw holes and is tricky to insert anything... Thank`s nige

Usually on the side of the ignition barrel housing. It's only a small hole about 2-3mm in diameter. There is only one so it shouldn't be too difficult to find...

Sorry, I overlooked that when I posted the link. Posting on the hop today. Without looking (to refresh my memory) the link actually refers to a Cavalier (presumably without a steering wheel airbag). Closest reference I could find in the time I had available, but yes, I agree, you don't need to remove the steering wheel, just the column shroud.

My local large Bristol VX dealer played funny when I wanted a new lock saying they were only available to the trade, which is rubbish. In the end I went to Vauxhall Heritage Services www.vauxhallheritage.com/ who matched my original lock with a new one from the key number in a few days by mail order. They are actually linked to Vauxhall.
