Considering getting either Honda Jazz or nissan note.......your thoughts

ive just bought a note 1.6se auto. i think its much more versatile than the honda and more legroom all over than the honda.

I haven't driven or ridden in a Note, but was impressed with a friend's Jazz. Well constructed and everything has a nicely engineered tactile feel to it. I don't go a bundle on common, bland, Japanese use of plastics - other Hondas included - but liked the Jazz.
No limo for ride comfort -early models attracted a lot of criticism - their '05 with the revised suspension settings is for me okay and it handles tidily. It has also had as much go wrong as my eight year old, owned from new, Honda Hornet motorcycle; zilch.
Nicely chiseled looks, too, especially in silver (though too common) and metallic blue.

I would recommend the Honda Jazz CVT. It has two modes of driving - manual and automatic. Put it in 'Drive' and the gear changes are very smooth. Put it in manual mode and you have a 7 speed manual mode where you use F1 style paddles by the steering wheel to flick through the gears. It also has a sport button for faster driving if you want to use it. It does 47 mpg combined (petrol) which is very similar to the manual version.

Wife has the manual Jazz, but I think the CVT suits it better. Keeps the revs down, and its nippy enough unless you want to accelerate hard, in which case you'll need something else.

The Note looks to me like a much bigger car than the Jazz. Whether that's what you want is another matter.

IMO the Jazz will be a better engineered car and hence will be less prone to any problems.
I am not sure about Nissan reliability & quality at the moment particularly while they are sharing parts with Renault
I really wish I bought a Jazz instead of Corolla for SWMBO.
I think Car magazine suggested the Jazz was better built than some cars costing 10 X the price. A slight exageration perhaps but I think they were just making the point as people have above that they are very well built.
They also seem to command very good residual values which will in turn be better for any future trade in.

Having not driven either, I can only really comment on them as a buying proposition...that in mind:-
Service - Dad has had numerous problems with three Nissan garages - none were efficient, and 1 charged an hours labour to changing a light bulb (which he later tried out and it took him 12 minutes). Another put the wrong type of oil in his Nissan Primastar van - found out by a Renault garage he went to the next time it was having problems. Having written to the managers of 2 of them, he has had no response. By comparison my uncle only ever has praise for his Honda dealer, the service is second-to-none (he has had a Saab and VW in recent past) and while his Accord has had problems, he reckons there was no argument it was warranty and such and no charge was brought. Though I accept these could both be uncommon experiences.
Depreciation - Nissans depreciate. They just do - look how cheap Almera, Primera and Micra are for their classes. Hondas do not. Despite being a four-year-old design you'd be hard pushed to find a Jazz that's for sale for less than £6,000, and in these fuel-conscious days I can't see a car as efficient as the Jazz losing out too much.
I'd pick the Jazz on this basis everytime.

They depreciate rapidly from new, because the market reckons they are overpriced. But when I was researching the purchase of my Almera, it was notable how the horrendous first-year depreciation was followed by realatively stability thereafter.
So unless the Note bucks the trend (it is in a niche market, which the others aren't), it'd be a great buy at 1-2 years old, but a poor buy new. However, there are no two-year-old Nissan Notes :(

My Mum has just bought a Note. 1.6SVE version in Intense blue. She looked at the Jazz but the styling didn't do it for her and she very much liked the drive of the NOTE and the SVE is quite a nice looking thing. HJ's report observes that the NOTE isn't as clever as the Jazz but still offers a hell of a lot of space for a small package. IMO it also looks nicer.
I suggest driving them both over the same long route and deciding which you prefer.

Actually Nissan's depreciation isn't that bad. Brand new Nissan Almera 1.5 S costs £7,549. Brand new Honda Jazz 1.4 i- DSI SE, bought from broker outside dealer network costs £10,178. And it's slower, smaller and you get less equipment for your money. Factual depreciation of Jazz is a little bit higher than that of Almera - you should expect to loose about 5 grand in 4 years on Jazz, and 4 grand on Almera, but it's only because Jazz is waaaaaaaay overpriced to begin with...
