"It would be interesting to know what kind they are"

There are quite a few websites which might help you with this.
we have a roost in our loft - can watch about a hundred coming out each evening like you, and we reckon they are pipistrelles (I am no expert and may be totally wrong!!) have thought about blocking their entrance during the winter so they don't return but they seem to do no damage and are good fun to watch in the evenings. Something nice about having wildlife around - the 5 fox cubs being brought up by parents under our back shed and which gamble about the garden on sunny mornings (destroying my onion sets and broad beans!) are fantastic, but the badger sitting on the back door mat the other evening did frighten the wife!! Hedgehogs like the cat food too!

Thanks for those links, I shall have a look. It is an offence to block access to a place where they are living apparently, however this is quite convenient since it gives me a good excuse not to paint the gutters and boarding.

Someone who works for me is an expert on all aspects of flora and fauna and he is going to pop around one evening to identify them. In the meantime we are enjoying sitting outside in the warm evenings with a cold drink and watch them leave the nest, about 9:20 pm usually - it's quite fascinating to watch since they all disappear in the same diraction. There's a stream about 100 metres away so I suspect they head for there - lots of juicy insects to devour no doubt.

I have been called a lot worse than a bat - a lot worse...

They are the ultimate airbone creature, they knock your vultures and eagles into a cocked hat. Superb bit of evolutionary work.
Xileno's bats - Altea Ego
On yer bike PU,

If you wish to know about evolution and the ultimate feathered hunting machine get yourself along on a Falconry course.

I went on one. They had various birds tethered and they all suddenly got twitchy. 1/2 a mile away at 5,000 feet was a small spec, that apparently was a wild hawk. 1/2 the birds wanted to go after it to chase it off, and half wanted to run away cos they knew it was higher up the food chain.

Every time a hawk went up the handler said he was 1/2 sure they would come back for the lure. If they wanted to be free then nothing would stop them.

Man and wildlife in perfect harmony.

I think it may be something to do with the hot weather, the roof elevation where they were nesting faces south and gets a good roasting during the day. Maybe they will return when it cools down. This won't be long, Wimbledon's on soon...

Cairnryan-Larne or Stranraer-Belfast? - Gromit {P}
Nothing that I know of, tyro, but I can't offer any first-hand advice on which ferry route is better.

If you're not going to be in the west until late July/early August, avoid Galway during the Galway Races (first week of August) unless you want to attend the races - the town gets very, very congested.
Cairnryan-Larne or Stranraer-Belfast? - daveyjp
Never used this service, but we have stayed at the Lighthouse Hotel near Stranraer (pricy but recommended - best food I've ever eaten!) and seen the ferries operating. For me it would be the HSS service to Belfast. Covers the route in just 105 minutes as opposed to over 3 hours by traditional ferry - they really do motor.
Land registry: changing ownership detail - Anglesey Ian
Hi all,

A little advice please, with this question.

Mrs AI has been left her mother's house and land (following her death)and has just receieved the Certificate of Probate agreeing the probate matters and also the will.

Clearly the house had been in my mother-in-laws name and the change of ownership now needs to be registered.

Is this something that she can do herself or will we have to consult a solicitor?

Any comments welcomed

Ian

Sorry, should have added that mother-in-law was a widow and therefore no surviving spouse existed. Also she was living in the house on her own before her untimely and sad death.

I know that these issues can make a difference to change of ownership and possession

Thanks again

she can certainly do it herself, if she has a logical/systematic approach. it is the government's objective that most matters should be easy enough to tackle with the help of the staff.
the land registry web site is not easy to navigate, but you need to access:

and read up pg009 there, plus maybe a few other pages.

to get here, go to www.landregistry.gov.uk/publications/

Sorry to hear the news. Ok you have cleared Probate and I assume completed an IHT 205 Inheritance Tax Assessment Form. Are you in an IHT situation if so consider using a solicitor to tidy up the ends as the costs are reductable, as is the Funeral and Wake Expenses ( 10K max ) against the Estate thus reducing the IHT Liability. This also applies to any expenses incured by the Executor named in a Will or representative on behalf of the deceased. As 'Dalglish' states you can do it yourself with a few forms, the original Will and a Certified copy of the Death certificate and the Probate grant. Proof of identity of your wife, Birth Certificate and Marriage Cartificate. Are going to place the house in 'Tenants in Common'. Take Advise here is is important and Visit www.taxationweb.co.uk as a starting point.

no i did not say that, and i disagree.
the money laundering guidelines 2006, as well as other statements by other bodies, mean that the id requirements are now "defused". the probate document, issued by the high court is sufficient in its own right as proof of id and entitlement.
as gordon brown said on 28 nov 2005 :"... no inspection without justification, no form filling without justification, and no information requirements without justification, ..."

so in my opinion, (biut also tried and tested), you only need to send what they ask for, e.g. in the casee of a registered property, this is all you need:

Land Registry Public Guide 9 Mar 2003
Death of the owner of a
registered legal estate
3.1 Registration of the personal representatives
Personal representatives can become the registered owners of a property. This option might be used if, say, the beneficiary of the will is under age. In this case, the personal representatives become the registered owner, but only as personal representatives of the deceased.
You will need to send us the following:
?
completed form AP1;
?
the original or official copy of the grant of probate/letters of administration (we will return this to you); and
?the appropriate fee. Please contact Land Registry for information on the fee payable (see our contact details on the front of this guide).
Once they are registered as owners, personal representatives can later transfer (see section 3.3 Transfer to a third party below) or assent (see section 3.2 Registering the beneficiaries of the estate (assents)
below) the property.

3.2 Registering the beneficiaries of the estate (assents)
The beneficiaries of the estate can also become the registered owners.
In this case, you will need to send us the following:
?
completed form AP1; and
?
completed form AS1
Use form AS2 if the deceased is the proprietor of a mortgage. Use form AS3 if the personal representatives are only assenting part of the land in a registered title;
?
the original or official copy of the grant of probate/letters of administration (we will return this to you); and
?
there is no fee if the personal representatives are already registered as the owners.

This is not the answer you want to hear, but please don't. Domestic aircon is the next thing B&Q and the others want to persuade us that we can't possibly do without. They've persuaded thousands of us that a slightly chilly evening on the patio MUST be combatted by burning propane into the night sky and now it seems a hot day MUST be challenged by using up yet more energy and hang the cost to the environment for this slender comfort.

Completely agree with you Nsar,if only more people took this view.I've always thought it ridiculous to attempt to heat the outside although,ironically,that is what we are doing,even when we don't want it.If heat is required outdoors,try a bonfire(in a chimnea if you want to be posh),at least then wastewood can be used rather than burning gas.

>>
As TVM says the heat has to be removed from the room.

To answer your question - Yes, but you have to drill a hole through an external wall to vent the heat.
From the instructions I have for a domestic portable unit the 106mm hole has to be between 50cm and 115cm above the floor.
So you have something like a tumble drier outlet.
In house airconditioning - artful dodger {P}
As henry K says you can drill an exhaust pipe through the wall.

On Saturday I purchased a 9000 BTU mobile air conditioning unit from Homebase with a price of only £149.99. They also do a 12000 BTU one for £199.99. These are about as cheap as you can find on the Net.

I must say that they really do work well. You can preset the temperature down at 1C intervals down to 16C. There are also 3 fan speeds, and a timer for upto 12 hours. You can also switch between cooling and dehumidifying. Most of the water is blown out of the exhaust, but there is a drip tray that needs emptying every few weeks.

The last 2 nights have been very warm and stuffy, but I slept like a log. With so much tree pollen at present, I am very slightly affected by it, but with the bedroom temperature reduced it seems to reduce the pollen's effect.

The fan and condensor do make a noise, but there are no rattles from the machine and it becomes general background noise which is slightly louder than a large fan.

Would I recommend anyone buying one? Yes I would. At £150 it is now something I cannot understand how I lived without it. Must make sure my next car has air conditioning (my wife's has).

I forgot to mention that 9000 BTU is sufficient cooling for a room about 200 square feet. At night with our bedroom door left open the temperature stabalises at about 20C, so it is nice but not too cold.

Going back to the original point about exhaust heat. My local newsagent/POst Office is like an oven at the moment due to the number of coolers and freezers they have in the shop. This is solely due to the exhaust heat from the heat exchangers not being removed outside the shop. The knock on effect is that they have to remove all of the chocolate bars from the shelves and keep them in a cooler place out the back. Why they do not instal air conditioning I do not understand.

In house airconditioning - Adam {P}
We're seriously considering one of these. Upstairs frequently sees temperatures of 35 degrees plus and no amount of fans cool you down because all they're doing it recirculating the warm air. I did a cracking bodge job attaching my fan to the window which drew in cool air but then it fell on me and cracked open on the floor so that was that.

The heat is getting really....well....hot! The dogs walk around permanently with their tongues hanging out and even having every window in the house open does nothing except allow loads of wasps in.

I noticed one in BandQ for 199 quid and I think it was a 10,000 BTu one. No idea what BTu's are but I'm assuming the higher the better?

I'm one of these who much prefers being very cold to being very hot! One question though, do you not need to seal the room in some way to make better use of it?
In house airconditioning - Xileno {P}
It's about time that houses were built that can remain cool in the hot weather, rather than burning up yet more fossil fuel to cool things down again. Nice thick stone walls is what you want.
In house airconditioning - Adam {P}
The problem with our house is that it's relatively new (about ten years or so) so everything's insulated quite nicely. Great in the Winter but in weather like this...

The crazy thing is, walk downstairs and as soon as you hit the bottom step you can feel the noticably cooler air. As soon as you walk upstairs it's like walking in a desert!

In house airconditioning - Nsar
Eh? House insulation doesn't work only one way. It keeps heat out as well as in!
In house airconditioning - Adam {P}
Yeah! It's keeping the heat of the computers and fans (they must generate their own heat) in!
In house airconditioning - daveyjp
Building aircon is just like car aircon - it won't work as effectively if you have windows open. Simillar tale to the one above about the warm shop. We have a small convenience shop near us which has four huge chiller cabinets full of every soft drink you can imagine - total overkill in terms of stock being carried. The shop is stifling so he has installed a portable aircon system which is vented through open windows and he has the door open. The aircon is simply adding to his electricity bill and doing nothing to cool the air.
In house airconditioning - Number_Cruncher
We sometimes used this sort of question during interviews for graduate engineers - along the lines of;

A reasonable well sealed and insulated room contains an operational fridge, with the door open. Describe what happens to the temperature in the room.

Yes, that's one of the better questions we have used! There aren't too many who can work through it logically in the heat of an interview though!

We used the questions not so much to see if the candidate knew the answer, but to see if the candidate could string together some kind of plausible technical argument, and as starting points for more technically probing questions.

These relatively simple questions would often weed out candidates with good degrees from god Universities, but without any real idea or feel about engineering problem solving.

Hi Adam

The BTU relates to the rate of cooling a machine can achieve. No doubt a quick Google will give a definite answer if you need it.

You could always make a blanking plate out of Perspex for the window and fix the the exhaust vent through that. It would certainly seal the window and would make the airconditioning more efficient, but the change would only be small relating to the overall cooling effect.

As I mentioned in my last post Homebase do a 12000 BTU for £199.99, so it is more powerful than B&Q's.

Another point I should mention is that the unit 9000 BTU unit is 37Kg, the 12000 might be slightly heavier still. If you are taking this upstairs on your own, it is quite heavy and awkward to lift upstairs.

I doubt you need one for each room. Would suggest buying one and seeing what you think. You can always use extra fans to direct cool air to another room. The cold air will also sublime down the stairs. I thought about getting a second one, but decided against as you still have to store them somewhere for the rest of the year.

Err, given his antics with writing off a fan, I think it may be wise to leave it on the ground floor ;-)

I spent most of my childhood in hot climates, many people in the UK are just not capable of dealing with heat. We always kept our windows and shutters closed in the scorching heat, in the UK shutters are hardly ever fitted and people immediately open all the windows on a hot day. During the harvest a lot of the old boys kept their waistcoats and long trousers on, it helps keep the heat off. These days everyone stips off to the bare minimum in the heat. We used to sit in the cellar for ten minutes when it got all to much but were strictly forbidden to touch the bottles...

Me too - in a climate where the temperature over 30C day in, day out, 365 days a year and never goes much below 25C even at night! You simply get used to it after a while and get on with life.

>>..many people in the UK are just not capable of dealing with heat.

Though that is true, I don't think it's a particularly fair comment; What is the average temp in South East? Say 12C? So when you get the occasional day when it reaches 30C, most people quite naturally will find it "uncomfortable".

By the same token, you'll find that people from warmer climes will find even what we'd call a warm day, quite chilly. For example have you seen the Sri Lankan cricketers wearing jumpers in 25C sunshine!

I must admit to becoming a softie - as soon as it reaches anywhere near 25C, I simply can't do any work and have to go down the nearest beer garden ;-)

No idea what BTu's are but . . .

Derives from the energy needed to raise one pound of water by one degree F -- the old imperial units.

As opoosed to the calorie, one gram of water raised one degree C.

453.6 grams in one pound and one degree F is 5/9 degrees C so calories for a pound of water by one degree F is 5/9 X 453.6 which is 252 calories.

I once hired a portable unit for a computer room that had an outside unit like a car radiator and fan. The heat was transferred by means of water travelling through two hoses, each about 1.5" ext. diameter. There was also a LV power lead from the indoor unit to the outside radiator. No idea who made it.

As someone said, the heat has to go somewhere. The options are a big air hose, 2 smaller water hoses or 2 refrigerant pipes (for a fixed unit). You could also have an outdoor water chiller unit, with water piped in to a FCU, but I don't think this is commonly done for portable units. Small outdoor chillers get nicked.

Canon DC40 digital video camera - SjB {P}
With the SjB household getting ever closer to increasing by two, Mrs SjB is dropping increasing hints that a digital camcorder would be nice to have.

All the way from my AT-1 I SLR purchased in 1978, through a A-1 SLR purchased in 1982 (both still in service and working beautifully), and on to the A80 compact digital camera purchased last year, I have had a penchant for Canon products; I have never once been disappointed despite using the A-1 to cover the start of the 1996 BT Global Challenge yacht race (it got well and truly salt-sprayed all day long) and dropping the same camera body halfway up table Mountain, whereupon it rolled and bounced for rather a long way! All three have are capable of producing storming results, too.

It's no surprise therefore that I like the Canon DC40 digital video camera and which has all the features I desire (in summary: recording to mini DVD, saving 4MP stills to SD card, LED subject lighting, decent manual override options, ergonomically sound, decent menu structure)

A professional photographer however commented through sucking of teeth "Don't touch it; expensive to buy (it is at a typical £650 web price, but to a degree that's irrelevant), poor lense quality not a patch on Canon's reputation. In short, trading on the brand name."

True?

I welcome comment on other similar mini DVD digital video cameras too, please.

This is a link to a useful site where real travellers post their comments on hotels in which they have stayed. I have used it in the past to choose a hotel and I have contributed re hotels I have stayed in.

Good, I am glad it helped you!
AV systems - adverse camber
I am gradually building up a set of tv oddments, ie VCR, DVD and now a satellite receiver. Problem is that my 'tv' isnt actually a tv, its an old monitor (has scart, bnc rgb)without a tv receiver built in. Everything has been OK so far because the VCR has got a receiver in it and the dvd feeds into the vcr. (sound goes through the monitor and out to the nad.

However now that I have a box in front of me with a sat receiver in it (plus motor, dish etc cluttering up the place) I dont have enough scart connectors.

So, Ive seen the scart multiblocks - but suspect that they are cheap and nasty ?

What about the AV amplifier thingies? Should I have some av amp system to connect everything together?

Should I buy another vcr with more than one scart inputs ?

My TV only has one SCART,I use a multiblock to run everything in,works fine,if you are taking audio out of the SCART make sure you get one with an in/out switch.
Anyone been to Ghent? - Mike H
Thinking of a long weekend in Ghent with SWMBO to celebrate 30 years of being chained together :-) ....having been to Brugges a number of times, I wondered how it compared? It doesn't seem to pop up so regularly as a short break destination.

Have any of you been there, and would you recommend it for a three-day break?
Anyone been to Ghent? - Armitage Shanks {p}
Are you Mike H the SAAB man? Both Ghent and Antwerp feature, by ferry or Eurostar, in a brochure issued by Leisure Direction and you can view the destinations and book on line.
Anyone been to Ghent? - Mike H
Indeed, that is me! Still Saabing with a 9-5 and 9000 at the moment.

I'll take a peek at the website you suggest, thank you.

Thanks - you may recall helping me some time ago re SAAB 9-3 injector problems? Antwerp and Ghent are both riverside/canalside type cities and of course there is Brussels too - very easy by Eurostar. Have a good time wherever you go!
Anyone been to Ghent? - Mike H
Yep, my 9-3 diesel which I had as a company car was replaced by the 9-5 as I needed more room.

We've been to Brussels and Brugges a number of times, also Amsterdam the once. We're really looking for somehere quick and easy to get to for a few days whhich is why they appealed. I'm really looking for someone with first-hand experience of Ghent.

Online Check in - Jane
Hi!

I'm off to Australia next week (woo hoo!) and I'm flying with Virgin. As with most airlines nowadays they have an online check in service (24hrs prior to flight). When I booked the flights I was allocated a seat which is stated on my e ticket. I'm just trying to decide whether to do check in online or at Heathrow.

The obvious benefits of online check in are that you don't have to queue for ages at the airport to offload your luggage etc. However, during a normal check in I normally enquire as to whether the flight is full and if not whether they could keep a seat free next to me, (it's a 2-3-2 seating and I'll be in the window seat), with the obvious benefit of being able to stretch out and not have to clamber over someone to go to the loo! Is there any way of finding out whether the flight is full prior to arriving at the airport??

I generally get to the airport about 1 - 2 hours earlier than they suggest so queueing to check in isn't normally a problem.

Do you put yourself at a disadvantage by not checking in online nowadays??

What to do???

Cheers!

We booked our Oz seats online 24hrs beforehand and then dropped our luggage off at the DIY check in at Heathrow. You can choose your seat online, but you won't be able to keep the one next to you free. But you can see which seats are free online.

You can always ask for an emergency exit seat at the airport, but I find that these are narrower than your average seat due to the tray being in your armrest.

Oz is a long flight and to be honest you will be be uncomfortabe wherever you sit, just try not to sit next to the toilet as you will forever get people queueing by your seat.

Where in Oz you off too?

Cheers for the replies.

I'm initially staying in Sydney with a friend but I'm in Aus for a year so intend to go everywhere!! I've been twice before, (although 3 months is the longest I've stayed), so know how tedious the flight is...hopefully I won't have seen all the movies!

As for the best seats....well an upgrade would be nice (although I'm definitely not holding my breath for that one!!). FYI I've had a look on www.seatguru.com/ which is pretty handy to see which seats to avoid and which are best on most planes

Regards

Enjoy your trip, Jane.

"Is there any way of finding out whether the flight is full prior to arriving at the airport??"

Not unless customer service will tell you over the phone, and you check in 24 hours early, Virgin may well still sell the last remaining seats on the flight after you check in.

"I normally enquire...whether they could keep a seat free next to me"

I'm not aware of any facility to do this online.

"Do you put yourself at a disadvantage by not checking in online nowadays??"

Only in that you have to queue at the airport. The airline stands to gain most because operating a check in desk costs more.

"What to do???"

Check in at Heathrow - it gives you the best chance of getting vacant seat beside you, which for a 26 hour flight, has to be worth the time spent in the check in queue, IMO.
Online Check in - BB
Yes, but if you check in online you will have a better selection of seats than at the airport. At the airport, most seats would be taken by the passengers booking them online 24 hrs earlier ;)

You can always move seat when you are on the plane if there are a few spares around.

'When I booked the flights I was allocated a seat which is stated on my e ticket.'

No need to queue then - check in online and be one of the last to board. If there are spare seats you will be able to sit where you like.

Enjoy the trip.
Nets over the road under powerlines - Chicken Vindaloo
My fellow Backroomers,

For a while now I've been puzzled by the sight of nets placed over the road under power lines. There's obviously something going on because there are roadworks signs. What are they doing? Is this to catch anyone who falls off while maintaining the wires or is it to stop any wire falling off and giving a passing motorist a shock?

I am intrigued!

I think you will find that the cables are being replaced as they only have a limited life span (no joke intended).The neting is to ensure that the new and old cables are lifted clear of the carriageway.You would have noticed that the netting is strung between a very substantial scaffolding to support the weight of the unattached cables.

I'm looking to get a new camera, can anyone recommend a good UK site to go for straightforward reviews and advice that aren't too geeky, I imagine that the amount of info available on the web on this subject is truly vast.
One with an archive especially useful as I'll probably buy either a second hand camera or a model that is not the new new thing as I'm looking to learn how to take better shots.

Thanks

The one that always gets mentioned is www.dpreview.com
It's US, and it is definitely in-depth and geeky, but their summaries are pretty clear, even for no-nothings like myself.
Good Digi Camera Advice Site - machika
It is aimed at the US market but the site owner is in the UK, as you can tell by the sample photos.

You can also try dcresource.com and imaging-resource.com.
Good Digi Camera Advice Site - teabelly
www.dpreview.com and imaging-resource.com have good in depth reviews of most cameras. They are a bit techy but they do say a lot about usability and any real irritations each camera has.

I'd probably get a copy of what digital camera mag or an ordinary photography mag like photography monthly as they usually have buying guides.

If you want a compact then fuji do some decent ones. I've got a panasonic lumix which is great.

If you are looking for an slr style one then you can't go wrong with a canon or a nikon.

What is your budget? Prices are falling all the time so you may find a new one isn't as expensive as you think.

Shopping list - SLR, reasonable comnpromise between toughness and weight, low time lag between focus and shutter, 5 megapixels.
Nikon appeals
Good Digi Camera Advice Site - machika
Best budget DSLR is reckoned to be the Nikon D50, which is a 6 megapixel camera. Camera without lens can be had for £325.

Depending on how careless you are with cameras I suggest that you consider a metal bodied SLR rather than one of these dinky plastic things! They work well and take great pictures but they do not survive being dropped or handled roughly. I had one ruined by being dropped, only a small height, but the mass of the batteries generated enough force/inertia to snap the puny little catch that held them into the camera body. £85 minumum charge to be looked at for repair; luckily someone at my work fixed it with araldite and a bent paperclip. It has been fine since then but they really are flimsy!

Desirable as they are, I think a metal bodied dslr will be in the £000s. All the ones I have handled that I could afford have been polycarbonate/plastic. Little battery doors aside, it's fairly strong and durable stuff these days.

If you know you wnat a dlsr, the Pentax *ist DL2 is currently £350 at Jessops inc. a 18-55 zoom (equivalent to 28-80 on a 35mm slr)- a stunning price for a dslr with lens. The forerunner to this camera

If you are prepared to spend more, and intend to build a lens collection, then Canon or to a lesser extent Nikon will give you more choice of 'branded' lenses.

I had no intention of buying a dslr for a while yet, but succumbed to the Pentax a few weeks ago, since when the price has come down - it was an easy choice for me as I have an assortment of Pentax lenses. I'm very pleased with it - What Digital Camera last month rated the Samsung GX-1L badged version (identical apart from the name) as good at £550.

What you you intend to use the camera for? e.g. if you want wildlife shots, or even your son playing football 50 yards away, a 3x zoom or a dslr with an 18-55 lens will not get you what you want. A good optical zoom factor makes up for a lot of pixels. As well as a pocketable 3x zoom camera, I also use a Panasonic FX20 (now replaced by FZ30) with a 12x zoom - it only has 5MP but composing a tighter shot using the zoom you still end up with a lot more pixels than if you use a 8MP 4x zoom and crop afterwards. The main weakness of the Pana is digital noise - the Pentax with its bigger CCD (albeit not many more pixels) is cleaner at iso 1600 than the Pana at iso 200, and with better resolution. But there's always a compromise - the Pana has a 12x f2.8 zoom 2 inches long - the equivalent lens for the Pentax would be a foot longer and cost a fortune.

Hope this gives you food for thought - if you are interested in the Pentax and can't get hold of the review in WDC ask me through the mods and I'll send you a copy.

For a good all-round cheap camera, the Canon A series take some beating. I have an A610 and it is super camera. The A series all use AA batteries and the latest incarnations use SD cards, which are small and very cheap.

The Fuji F10/11 have the advantage of sensors that will work well in low light without flash.

I'm just about to buy an Olympus E500 to complement my trusty old OM1 and OM4 (plus a couple of digital compacts and a 6x6.) Available for around £600 including 14-45mm (28-90mm equiv), 40-150mm (80-300mm equiv) lenses and a 1GB card, it covers just about everything I need as a fairly competent amateur.

If I need something special, I hire it.
