Hello,
2002 Mk III Mondeo TDCi Ghia X, 107k miles, slight clonk felt through steering wheel when rocking it while stationary, not at all noticable on the move. I have checked the column and the track rod ends - all OK, however if I hold either track rod while the steering wheel is rocked gently I can feel a slight clonk perhaps from within the rack, I know various suspension joints could exhibit such symptoms, also drive shafts/CVs.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

either the rack itself or more likely the inner ball joint on the track rod

or the uv joint on the steering linkage going to the rack

Good point about the inner ball joint though it is certainly not the UJ on the column.
Thanks.

What about a broken suspension coil.

The steering coloumn is a two piece design the lower section slides inside the upper section. It can 'clonk' when the lower section does not move freely. Disconnect the coloun at the bottom and grease the lower section where it slides into the upper section (drivers footwell)

Thanks though I know this, it is definately not the column, I had a clonking colum on a Vectra that was never fully solved and when this car was new it clonked slightly on left hand bends which was solved by greasing and adjusting the column, this now is a different issue. I am thinking that it is perhaps a suspension joint or CV because I think I can detect it coming on and off the throttle. I asked the Ford dealer today, the guy reckons it is nothing to worry about, very minor he says, they want about 30 mins labour to diagnose, I will give it some thought.

You can get this on any motor, especially on your mileage,it dont mean you have a problem, though would get it checked out.
slight clonk could be anything from steering uj bottom joint to rack/track rod end, track rod end is most likely, but if not sure how to check get someone to do it for you

Steve, Thanks I did say "I have checked the column and the track rod ends", I was helping my dad change track rod ends 30+ years ago! I am thinking it is a suspension joint or mount.
Regards.
