Does it do it hot, cold or when, selecting first when stationary??. Are you sure your clutch is not dragging. Pree the clutch to the floor and let your foot slide off the pedal this will excite the auto adjuster if your model has a cable clutch. Regards Peter

Hi
Did as you suggested but my clutch pedal came straight up with no resistance.

Ive noticed that my gears arent very smooth, the gears feel sort of notchy, sorry to sound silly. I looked in a Hayes manual for my Golf and it said, SAE 80 or GL4, bought some Comma EP75W-80 which states it for SAE 75w-80 but Ive noticed it says GL5. The only oil I could find with GL4 is EP75W-90 which Ive been told is too heavy.

Hope you can advise as I dont what to put the wrong oil in and cause further problems.
Thanks Noel

The identifiers GL4 and GL5 merely refer to the duty factor of the oil and are not related to its viscosity. I would never use a GL4 oil in any modern transmission - GL5 is the minimum accepable duty factor.

Three things you must check very carefully (how about asking VW?). Firstly the recommended viscosity eg. 75W-90 for the temperature range over which you are operating the vehicle. Secondly check whether an EP (extreme pressure) oil is needed. It usually is, and this detail is vital. Thirdly, you must also ascertain whether the specified oil is mineral, semi or fully synthetic. Some people mistakenly use synthetic oils in older transmissions, which can have fatal consequences as these oils foam easily at the higher oil levels found in older units.

So, it's not that simple - follow precisely the maker's recommendations.

Hi
Thanks for your reply.
I did contact VW dealer today and all he could tell me was VW part number and price. I asked him what that actual type and specification was and he didnt know!?

So Im at a loss really, I have done some searching and Redline MTL has been mentioned but do you think I should just get it from VW (they're not always the best though!)
Any further leads would be appreciated :(

Typical main dealer protectionism. If his price for the specified oil is in line, then just buy it. If not, refer to the applications lists of reputable oil suppliers such as Duckhams or Castrol.

Any decent motor factor will be able to specify and supply the correct quality and grade of oil.

You don't need to use Vw oil; don't forget they dont make their own, they buy it in and put their name on it; same as all car assemblers!
