I have chance to buy a genuine 8000 mile Laguna 1.8 auto May 2002 reg. for £4000. Everywhere i look says they are so unreliable i should not touch it with a barge pole but what do you think?
I know the full history and it has been trouble free but i also know HJ says low milers are to be avoided!

I think it will be fine, you see plenty about. Give it a service straight away if you buy it.

For a 2002/51 Authentique auto with average miles Parkers reckon:
Franchised Dealer £ 5615
Independent Dealer £ 5225
Private Good £ 4250
Private Poor £ 3510
Part Exchange £ 3980
A higher spec plus the lower mileage will raise this value (?how much) so IMO it looks like either a good or a very good price.

If you can get £4000 trade in for a 2002 laguna petrol let me know where and I will have a transporter load there tomorrow.Into the trade Laguna 2002 1.9dci estate 1 lease owner £4300.The trade will not touch petrols around Leeds except for silly money.I would not have another Renault no matter what the price a quick way to bancruptcy.Clutch ,clutch master cyclinder, rear axle bushes ,ecu ,abs ,you name it its a problem.

The problems were not solved till 2003. Its a 1.8 its an auto its a heavyish car - Its a slug.

Yes TVM is right, 2003 on Lagunas are the better ones.
Mileage is far too low, it may have done lots of short journeys. Best to find a later higher mileage one.

I looked at Autotrader and there is a nearly identical car at £6995!!!
I think this car will end up on the forecourt at well over £5k!

Because its on autotrader does not mean it will sell at that price.
Also it may be bought by a mug who does not know the full facts - You now do. Take my word - walk away from it.

To clarify it is a petrol 1.8 auto Expression, i know the owner who is trading it in and that is what he has been offered as p/ex. He has kindly offered it to me. It is pristine and genuine, full service no problems and well driven ie about 10 mile journeys so at least it gets hot but then again little or no long motorway runs.
To be safe i thought of a warranty and have been quoted £550 (a similar Vectra is only £312 so that gives me some idea what the professionals think of the reliability!!)

Can you tell me where the dealer is who offered him £4k you do not meet many philanthropists in the motor trade or perhaps he is kidding you a bit.It would not fetch £2k at the block if they could find a buyer.

I would have it for 2K, got to be worth more than that for spares, particularly since it's so low mileage.

Go to premier auctions in Leeds anytime you will have a choice its booked at £1800 with average miles nobody wants autos and nobody wants petrols in the trade.

Phew i am learning lots!!! Not bought a car for 8 years(Accords go forever!).
I know the exact deal and this chap is a true gent so i trust his price but do not feel i should go public on HIS behalf and give the details of HIS deal. He is buying new so guess there is fat somewhere for the dealer. If its only worth £1800 at auction it sounds like he has got a good deal and i should use the Barge pole and politely say no to my friend. For Andy's info we are not a million miles from Leeds!

Sounds as if the new car 'discount' has been reflected in the p/x allowance- is your friend paying list for the new car?
What you (and he) really need to know is what he could buy the new car for without p/x; if that is lower than the price he is paying then the difference should be knocked off the £4000 to give the actual p/x valuation.
Sometimes buyers are a little disingenuous - the dealer will have told them that they can have a discount if they sell the p/x themselves so they will offer it to friends or family saying "you can have it for what the dealer is offering me...". Other buyers are just naïve and will pay list for the new car. Your friend may be neither and I am cerainly not impugning him without the facts, but knowing the deal you should be able to work it out!

I'm sorry, I know Lagunas aren't popular, and not very reliable, and petrol autos are especially unpopular... and at £4k it's got nothing to make me want to own it, not getting excited about the low mileage, but I refuse to believe that it would only make £1,800 at auction.
At £3,995 it would fly off the right forecourt and I'm sure there are franchises who would try for £2k more than that; therefore do all dealers in Lagunas really require £2,200 as an absolute minimum profit margin from auction to retail to look at a car like this?
Oh and I agree with everything that Manatee has said but if this dealer is offering £2,200 over true value then there must be a reason why they are willing to "forego" £2,200 of profit in the new car. (Admittedly we don't know what the new car is and that could only be half the 'market' level of discount).

Our normal margin used to be £1500, out of which VAT, servicing, cosmetic repairs, warranty and the inevitable requests for discount had to be taken. I can sort of imagine why a dealer would want £2,200 across a car like a Laguna Auto when I consider that we were trying to sell decent cars and not cars that have a record for going wrong!

Rodger, if you've had your Accord for 8 years it's worth more to you than to anyone else - so you might be better off keeping it till it needs a repair that costs more thsn it's worth (this may not be for ages) - then see what's around.
When that day comes, if you like the idea of a Laguna (certainly one of the safest cars to be in) then newer ones with the problems sorted will be on the market.
Or save up for another Accord!

Renault automatic boxes have a very bad reputation for locking in one particular gear on all models.
When I was looking for a new car for SWMBO back in August I looked at several mint, low mileage, one owner, high spec Meganes and Scenics but all the bad press on the internet re the autobox put me right off.
I would say avoid unless it's very cheap. Expression is a fairly basic spec on a Laguna as well. You want a Dynamique or a Privelige surely.

Yes the auto box is my big concern too. It seems they are poor across the range and other posts talk of repeated failures under warranty.

Renault autoboxes without a warranty are to be avoided at all costs, even with low miles. Allow for the cost of a replacement box to reach a more realistic price.
If you're happy with the Honda then buy another one.

It is interesting to see that a guide can say a car is worth £4250 but they fetch £2k at auction and the trade will not touch them.
It goes to show anything is only worth what someone will pay for it.
Anyway at any price i do not want a car that is unreliable so i will NOT buy it. I can hear sighs of relief from many.
Why buy a dodgy car when the forecourts are piled high with family autos that do not have that reputation.
I have read HJ,s pages (paper and online) for many years
but not posted here before. Very glad i did and will seek more advice on replacing the Accord.
BTW did you see the Renault boss has set one of the company goals to produce the next Laguna as best in class for quality.Hope he has his Nissan engineers lined up for the job. The next Priaguna should be good!

Well, I have to say that we had a 1.8 Clio with an auto box for a while and the gearbox was no trouble at all. Very smooth change also.
The electrics on the car were another matter altogether.
