Astra MK3 1.4 MPI wont start.Crankshaft? - KeithP
The car (Astra MK3 1.4 MPI C14SE) has suddenly stopped working :( (just as I was about to sell it as well, typical) The engine turns over, but wont start. Fuel is getting through and there is a spark at the plugs. The starter motor is fine, there is also an occasional popping through the air filter. Could this be the crankshaft sensor or something else? Thanks :D

Really? I only had that replaced inc tensioners about 8k miles ago :o. I will pull off the cover and have a quick look.

I have just checked and the belt hasn't slipped (phewwww). Any other ideas? Matt

so you"ve checked the timing marks on the crank and the cam good man,im baffled now .

Probably a daft question(not certain of your car)has it a distributer cap and rotor arm?

The car doesnt have a dizzy and rotor. It is the coil/electric type (cant remember its proper name). Thanks tho!

By a slipped timing belt, I just presumed you meant that it had slipped off? I presume there must be a more technical method then (whoops)

No, it could mean it was not adjusted correctly and slipped a few teeth,need to check the cam/s alignment/to head- with crankshaft alignment sounds more like the problem

Oh I see, the cambelt was replaced in January 2005 along with the waterpump, tensioner, thermostat and aux belt about 9k miles ago. Would it really have slipped after all that time? Also I remember the garage saying the timing was slightly wrong before and he adjusted it, after which it ran much better and used fuel more in line with manufacturers specs.

It has recently due to a sticking Idle control valve (which I took out and cleaned) and a Lambda sensor (of which I have a replacement on its way!. Those were the only two fault codes showing. Thanks Matt

They people from the garage came round today (as they were on another call out else where), looked at the car, said the belt was fine but that the car was just very flooded. So cleaned the plugs, refitted them and then bump started the car and it was away. Works perfectly now. Nice to have a simple fix for once!! Thanks for all the advice and help :)
