Some Chav stole my front number plate yesterday, are there any special docs I need to buy a replacement and how much are they?

You'll need the V5, proof of ID (passport or photo driving license) and proof of address (recent utility bill). Prices go from about a tenner for a basic plate

Bought a pair of plates from Partco last week. Total cost was £11.75 inc VAT for thr pair IIRC.
Theft of plate should be reported to the Police, might save you some trouble if plate gets used for some dishonest purpose.

Have you ever noticed how many plates you see that are not correct ie italics, wrongly spaced,bits added or taken away.When you consider can be £2000 and the car made so you cannot replate it then it is obvious it is not a offence that is remotely looked at ,you could prbably drive for years without the plate and nobody would stop you and if they did say you never new it must have just happened.

My last one was about three years ago, I seem to remember paying £12 at Halfords. That was for a standard plate, if you want the EU badge, then I think it's a little more.

You would think so wouldn't you!!
In my Beetle driving days, I used to replace the chrome bumpers every spring. One year I just needed to pop to the shop, but this was before I'd fitted the number plate back on. "No-one will notice, I'll only be using the car for five minutes" I thought and promptly got pulled within about 30 seconds of leaving home.

Sods law at work that day.

Thats GOOD advice. Report the theft - get and make a note of the 'Crime Number'.

Plates are stolen to commit crimes, clone vehicles, evade speeding charges and congestion charge. First you might know about it is when summonses turn up at your address. Probably followed by Bailiffs. Easier all round if you can quote a crime number as part of your explanation.

Not in Scotland*. Just ask for a number plate and they'll make it for you - no questions asked.

* - apart from Halfords who do want a V5 etc...

Apologies to any budding Chavs - just a turn of phrase:-) In fact it was probably kicked or levered off, they also tried to yank the three pointed star off the bonnet on mine and my friends car, not washed it yet so not sure if there are any envy scratches yet.

Have got my replacement, £7.64. Needed the Reg Doc, Drivers licence and passport.

Got both number plates on my car stolen the other day. Police is now informed as well as the DVLA.

I have ordered my new number plates from Ebay (£20) for the pair with border, 3D lettering (kind of!!) and GB/Euro label on the left. I checked the prices at Halfords and it was £17 (per unit) there.

The irony is that online they do not ask for any details, no document to produce as they ask at Halfords and it is cheaper.

And strictly speaking, they won't be legal as not from an approved supplier. I think they have to have the supplier name and postcode on, but both my current cars are pre 73 and on black and white plates.

Can't imagine you'll have any bother, although I think it's supposed to be a MOT failure point.

There was a query in HJ's Telegraph column some while ago concerning some "enforcement" officers in London (I think) that used the absence of a suppliers name and postcode on the numberplate as an excuse to attempt to search the car. Perhaps HJ could provide a link to the relevant query?

I like those plates with fancy fonts on them, couple of years ago i was in charge of seven classic Fords for a car show and i got special plates done for them in the Ford font. Obviously we didnt put them on until we arrived at the place. It does annoy me when people drive round with unreadable number plates.

I have checked the plates; it has got the name and postcode of the supplier but in very small font though. The MOT guidelines do not prescribe the f******** for these text, do they?

When plates are stolen, why cant the DVLA issue a replacement number to the original owner and cancel the stolen reg.

Then if the scrotes attempt to use in an illegal way, the number will flag up as illegal. Stops the real owners from getting fines etc. and all the hassle with trying to prove innocence.

At present just replacing your stolen plates wont stop the originals being used by criminals for whatever reason or the fines, police, bailiffs turning up at your door.
