Tyres - Mike Rollings
I have a 1987 Alfasud Sprint. The tyres are due for replacement (185/60x14). Can anybody recommend a good buy. Durability is not so important as I only do about 7,000 miles a year. Most important factors in order are:

Handling and roadholding
Quietness
Low rolling resistance

My budget for 4 tyres is around £250.

Have a look at Pirelli P6000's - I find they meet all your requirements very well.

tHAT'S RIGHT. OR CONTINENTAL EC0-C0NTACTS. BUT MAKE SURE YOU GO TO A FITTERS WHICH LIFTS THE CAR ON A TWO OR FOUR POINT HOISt. IF THEY JACK IT UP WITH TROLLY JACKS THEY ARE ALMOST CERTAIN TO PUT THE FRONT SUSPENSION OUT OF ALIGNMENT AND THESE DAYS IT COULD COST YOU AROUND £100 TO HAVE IT PROPERLY RE-SET.

what nonsense re. jacking on suspension , most cars have sill area jacking points or crossmembers or perhaps there really are animals out there

I would never allow trolley-jacks anywhere near my car, they are always huge things that were never intended to lift the average car, will always remove the underseal wherever it is positioned, and in my case was unfortunate enough to have my chassis bent when my car was raised on 4 of the damn things when they were released one at a time the last one leaving my car suspended on one corner swaying from side to side thus causing the damage!

Regarding Eco contact tyres,They were fitted as standard to my
Chevrolet Blazer and I can only say they are the biggest load of rubbish I have had on my wheels (except in the late 60s Goodyear G800s).They may be quiet but they have almost no grip in wet weather and the do not last .Every Blazer I have seen has changed his tyres.I use Cooper M&S snow tyres they are gauranteed
for 60000mls and cost far less than the Eco contact.My DB is shod at the moment with Conti M&S winter and these are superb.It will be going on to its Pirelli 6000 next week also very good.
In Germany we all change are tyres for winter and summer and have a far wider range to chose from,I would also say that if someone needs new tyres and is travelling in to Germany buy them here there upto half the price of the UK.

I'm pretty pleased with Michelin Pilot HX (205/60 VR 15 size). Not cheap but handle well and have kept wet road grip down to 3mm on the front (unlike the Michelins of old!). Quiet too, unlike Goodyear Eagle Tourings which could give a good impression of a duff rear wheel bearing!
