Trade Plates - Andrew Barnes

I am setting up a company with no premises, a website based car retailer. How do I obtain trade plates and can they be used on an unregistered car?

No. Because they come to inspect your premises, your stock and your books to make sure you are trading cars and have a track record.

Who is 'they' in this case?

Does that mean home traders need proper insurance for test-drives, etc?

Trade Insurance - David

Yep home traders need trade insurance. It can be a pig to break into trade insurance, I had real problems from the start but now, several years on, I have a quality policy that is incredible value for the flexability it gives you.

Best way to find out is contact your local VRO,but often different offices intrpret the rules differently.

I'm doing the same and the nice lady at the DVLA sent me a form "Application for a Trade Licence" VTL301 which explains that the purpose of the plates is to avoid a dealer having to reregister stock cars in his/her name but be able to use them on the public roads. Phone your DVLA local office (found at www.dvla.gov.uk/contact/local_offices.htm) and they will help. The form looks quite straightforward and Reading DVLA told me they would accept applications from dealers without premises.

Next step is insurance, I'm getting fed up with the lackadaisical response from the "trade" insurers I've approached. Probably because I sounded interested in their comments rather than sucking air through my teeth? Maybe I'm going to have to put on the accent I use at the local plumbers trade counter and see if I have better success.
