Hoping is not a good thing.most economy oils are mineral.I do know a person that uses that but is 20/50 from halfords.Ok it works for a while but has notice`d hard starting in cold.If not mistaken should use a 10/40 semi synthetic apart from not knowing how old the car is but that would be a better oil to use.U should really check the manufacturer data for correct oil will make all the difference.?

ok.lets say same viscosity and mineral...how do i know if im buying extra quality or just a fancy can wth £4.99 in it?

You are not going to get a cheap oil for your car.unless you wish to cause damage to your engine there is no way out.But then how long do you wish to run it.a cheap oil in most respects is cheap and nasty I would have thought anyone know`s that nothing is cheap if you respect your car if not then buy it
no disrespect here but to run any car on a shoestring is not a good idea.In actual answer to what you ask.No one can answer that you should know the proper oil used in it and should be using it.I stand corrected if wrong but doubt it.

For an older basic engine I can buy top quality Ford 15/40 mineral oil at £5.99 per 5 litres.

For slightly more modern vehicles one of the best 10/40 Semi-Synthetics is Vauxhall and costs £7.99 at the same outlet.

I agree with MM, there are good oils available at cheap prices.
Ford & Vauxhall are not going to supply oil that will cause brakedowns with their engines. All manufacturers specify a particular oil grade API specification for their engines ie SH SJ
etc for petrol engines or CE CF etc for diesel engines. All oil containers show the API spec of the oil & provided it is the same or higher letter than that specified by the engine manufacturer you will be ok.

Learn how to read the API, SAE and ACEA ratings via the relevant organisation's websites, print them off, and stick them on your garage wall. Then when you see the oil for sale, look to see if it meets the requirements of your vehicle. Some of the cheap stuff sold in DIY chains is pretty archaic in spec.

BTW, here is a tip to get cheap Vauxhall branded "Delphi" oil...

in mineral, semi, or fully synth...

Go to Vauxhall dealer, ask if they are still doing the Trade Club buy 3 get one free on 5 litre bottles (they are), ask for four, if they ask the company name, say the name of a local tlarge taxi firm!

I agree - use Vauxhall Oils - they cannot be beaten on price!

A manufacturer will not skimp on oil quality whereas a supermarket oil supplier might do??

you realise these probably come from the same refinary/factory?

Yes, indeed, but OEM's have a certain 'duty of care' [is that the right word??] to sell a decent oil with their name on the packet.

My old Polo would run on any old carp. 5 litres £2.99 from Asda. Couldn't break the damn thing.

Chances are you'll get sick of the old Polo whatever you do to it, and then sell it for £8.79 to the elderly where it will continue to grind out the miles until Cliff Richard freezes over.

After you've changed cars you'll miss the Polo, but will harbour a certain resentment that God gave immortality to a German automobile instead of you.
