Omega : Radio removal : Help ? - Shep
Anyone help ?

I have a 1994 Omega CDX with a standard radio which I want to upgrade with a CD player.

Can anyone tell me how I get the old unit out?. I made an attempt at this operation the other day by inserting 4 suitably sized pins in the holes where the "extraction" tools would go.

This enabled me to withdraw the unit a few cm's but then encountered resistance which I could not overcome and was reluctant to force.

Needless to say. I abandoned this attempt in favour of seeking advice.

Any help gratefully received

You are trying to remove it the correct way, but I suggest you get the proper extraction tools. They're readily available from most motorists shops for a couple of quid. Insert them into the holes and exert an outward pressure before trying to pull out the stereo. If your Omega has the separate dash display, and you are replacing with another Vaux stereo, you might have to get the display recoded before it will work.

Dave, thanks for the advice.

I had another go just earlier this evening and it turned out to be that the inner sleeve was being pulled out along with the radio. With a gentle bit of levering, the radio body separated from the sleeve and I had the old set out.

The set in situ at the moment is the SC 303 (grundig) and I am hoping to get a CDR500 (Delco)tomorrow. Do you know if I need to get the display re-coded ?

If not, do you know how or where can I get this sorted ?

Thanks again,

I had to take my radio to a main dealer who for £15 and 3 days later got the info from Luton. There was no way out of it for security reasons.

More than likely.

There are two chances, fit it in and try it. If the display doesn't work then you'll need to get it married up with the CDR500. I know that rileyrm has an Omega, and he has mentioned that he had to have his recoded.

Yes, fair chance it will need the display recoded. I changed a CAR300 to a CAR400 on a Corsa and needed the display recoded. The set showed the display to allow input of the security code, but although the radio worked there was no display of station information. Local Vx Dealer did it in 5 minutes for £10. He said despite apparent similarities, the radios are quite different.

John,

Yep....mine too.

I fitted the CDR500 and the security coding process worked fine but as you say no display beyond that.

Do you know what this re-coding excercise entails and if is is something the DIYer can do ??

Kind regards,

I doubt it's a DIY job. It seems to need the dedicated Vauxhall computer plugged into the car. It's a very quick job, and my dealer did it while I waited.

I replaced the Philips CAR400 cassette player in my Vectra with a CDR500 and the dash display worked just fine.

My lasting contribution to this community.....

I asked the dealer what needs to be done and they said the Omega has a 10-digit display and the CDR500 CD player unit only requires an 8-digit display.

All you need to do is..........

With the Ignition on
Press and hold the 4 & 6 buttons on the set
Then switch on the radio keeping the 4 & 6 pressed
and the display will show "10-digit" which will then "toggles" to "8-digit"

Let all the buttons go and the job is done.

Right result
