Vauxhall Astra GTC 2.0 CDTI Auto - Automatic Gearbox longevity/known problems - KCSRenault

Hello,

My 2014 astra gtc 2.0 cdti, has what i believe to be a six speed conventional automatic gearbox.

The car currently has around 48,000 miles, and has just had an auto box fluid change transfusion by a local garage.

Are there common problems with these boxes? are they proven GM technology?

I would like to get to 100,000 miles in the car, which will be roughly 4 years.

Are these gearboxes capable of that?, with regular serving, which has been suggested at every 25,000 miles for the auto box, from now on.

The car does not tow, and does not sit in much traffic,

Any input much appreciated,

many thanks

Torque converter autos (assuming this is one) tend to be quite reliable, you're helping it by giving it fresh oil recently and will do so again at some point, i've done this for years too.

The only problems that i have heard of with TC autos are usually with owners who overuse kickdown and take off under full power constantly so very hard almost racing style driving, this will shorten the life of any box and/or torque converter, same as it would a manual box and clutch.

I've run TC autos on and off since 1973, the only box that failed was on my Mk 3 Zodiac, and that was after i'd stripped it out and after several meetings and multiple crashes on the banger racing track, took it on its last race in reverse only as that was the only option :-)

Very likely to be fitted with an Aisin Warner Japanese gearbox. Very durable and not known for any major issues .

Is this AT6 box the same as the EAT6 box used in Peugeots, also part of the PSA group? If so it should be good for the life of the car, if driven sensibly and not subjected to the risk of damage from incompetent 'servicing' , e.g. unnecessary fluid change, thus disturbing filtered particles and possibly replacing the original good fluid with an insufficient quantity of an inferior substance.

I know the 1.6 petrol auto have a common failure and that is the transmission oil cooler in the lower part of the radiator, this cracks and the coolant ends up in the trans oil and vice versa, potentially destroying the gearbox if not spotted immediately.

Not sure if the diesel variants have the same weakness?

The gearbox should be fine, it’s the Fiat designed motor under the bonnet that’ll generate the grief when it gets beyond around 70,000 miles. They’re nowhere near as robust as the noisier 1.7 Isuzu engine they also used.

Cool, thanks for the input guys. It is always good to have a few perceptions on technical related issues!
