I have never had problems charging my phone when camping with the car, as previously the 12v power socket was permantly live. However, now I have moved to a new Honda Jazz, I find that, in common with quite a few other cars, the power socket is only live when a key is left in the ignition.

Does anyone know if it is practical to rewire the power socket to be permanently live, or is there another way of charging the phone when the key cannot be left in the car.

Rather than try to rewire the existing power socket I suggest wiring in another fused socket direct to the battery, widely available from caravan/camping shops and there are loads of examples on amazon.

When I go mountain biking I find that using the maps, gps and route tracing programs saps the battery summat chronic.

So I now have a 3Ahr slave battery that I can connect to the phone to recharge during breaks. There's loads on ebay but try and find one with a known brand, there are some that are not what they say!

I have also just got a new Samsung J5 and am very pleased with it's battery life. Far superior to my previous S4 Mini. That helps a lot.

I would think the best and easiest option would be to get the socket wired to a permanent supply.However,remember the jazz has a very small battery,so not much reserve.I would advise against running a power lead directly to the battery.Trying to find a route through the bulkhead for the cable on a modern car is virtually impossible.

How about a power bank to carry with you and charge it as you drive they are light to carry and will power the phone for days

If your worried about running the battery flat using a permanently live socket, you could use a solar charge controller (without a solar panel) to feed the permanently live socket and set it to cut off power to the socket at say 12.4 volts.

Many thanks for the comments. In the good old days I would simply have wired a new connector myself. I don't fancy this with a new car, so think the Power Bank idea is the way to go.

On older cars, it is better to use these power banks, as the cigarette lighters may not be designed for continuous use and the wiring may be inadequate. Hopefully on newers car, they have been designed better.

Both MB and Jaguar have this right. An ignition controlled outlet in the front, a permanent live in the boot.

Subaru provide three outlets, but none are permanently live.

Some dual usb power banks have low output and take an age to charge, check output of what your after and decide from that, my one charges a note 4 in just over an hour.

thats faster than the mains charger it came with
