Anyone out there know anything about VR6 camchains/tensioners?
I own a VR6 (5 years old 65K miles FVWSH). The car is making a nasty thrashy rattly sound which I understand is the camchain tensioners wearing (after 65K miles!!).
Trouble is, garages, even main dealers & specialists say 'don't worry about it, they all do that'! Rubbish, other VR6's i've driven don't make anywhere near the racket mine does.
Does anyone know what to do about this problem???

I can't help really as I don't know much about VR6s but:
So, what you are saying is that several garages including VR6 specialists have had a look at the car, and driven it, presumably with you in it saying that yours is making more racket than all the others you've driven, and still they are telling you "don't worry."? I wonder why? Normally you might expect at least one of them to agree with you saying, "You're right, Mr Golfer, it IS noisy. Let us have it in to our workshop for some unnecessary and expensive rectification."
Am I missing something?

On my bike the cam cahin tensioners can be replaced/reset without dismantling the engine.
Why not whip your tensioner out check and replace accoring to the haynes manual.
May well be two bolts - easy as a sump plug.
However cam chains can be noisey and 65k is nothing!
Unless, of course, you bought it second hand from a dealer in which case the mileage could be anywhere from 65-250k and you'd never know.

I like that "whip out your tensioner" - please see below the parts list for the VR6 cam chains and tensioners. Thats before you've removed a mile of pipework, various anonymous ecu black boxes, both front wheels and wheel arch shields, probably the radiator and an engine mount or two.

Should have bought a bike. Two bolts, slot out, slot in.

That's only the tensioner spring Toad, the tensioner blade needs the camcover taking off. On my 750 that means removing tank, airbox, carbs, coils, and heatshield.
