Mazda 5 Venture 1.6D - Engine cut-out in fast traffic - cindersifter

Mazda 5 Venture, 62 reg, The engine has cut out on five occasions, when accelerating in fast traffic, and the tcs/dsc light appears on. The main dealer in Southampton, that supplied the car, has had the car for four days, but has done nothing, has no idea of a cause, and says there is no record of any such fault. We have had RAC breakdown twice and they suggest switching off the TCS/DSC before every journey, but the cut-out has still occurred and of course leaves us without this safety ?? feature. Very worried about any future driving.

It's curious that the dealer says "there is no record of any such fault", do they mean they can't FIND a fault, or they've never heard of it happening? Or both? Does the car restart straight away after cutting out, or do you have to wait before it'll start?

Cutting out while accelerating (for example, onto a motorway from a slip road) is highly dangerous, and puts you at risk of an accident. I would lean on the dealer and say that if a fault cannot be found and fixed (and you won't take it back until it's fixed), you will demand a suitable replacement car.

As the car's a year old, you probably wouldn't be able to reject it and get a full refund, unless you reported the same cutting-out fault to the dealer in your first 6 months of ownership, and they'd tried to rectify it in that time. However, you may be able to push for a refund / replacement to your car's equivalent value.

However, it's still well within the manufacturer warranty, so at the VERY least you should be given a courtesy car by the dealer at no cost to you (apart from fuel) while they investigate the problem.

I would ask the dealer to replace the diesel fuel filter as a first move.

Main dealer cannot find any fault and say that they have never heard of it, plus it is not logged as an issue on the Masda system..

Have to wait about ten minutes before it will start again.

Yes dangerous, and there have been some scary moments.

Just realised that although I originally mentioned that the RAC suggested that the TCS/DSC be switched off ........ I should also have added that the warning light for the TSC/DSC always comes on when the engine cuts out ( even when it has previously been switched off.).

How many times has the car been into the dealer with this fault, and over what period of time - weeks, months?

If the car has been serviced as per the Mazda schedule, and only by the supplying dealer, then you need to state your case very clearly, in writing (by email for speed, and copy on a physical letter) to the head of the dealer, copying the service manager. Say that:

- the car has a dangerous fault causing the engine to cut out unexpectedly, and in situations where engine power is needed.

- it will not restart for 10 mins after cutting out

- you've called the RAC on X occasions to assist you (specify dates and times)

- you've spoken to the dealer and taken the car to the dealer on X occasions (specify dates and times)

Then say that as a result of this dangerous fault, the car is not fit for purpose, and you demand that it is either a) completely fixed to your satisfaction or b) replaced with an equivalent car.

Also ensure that you demand a courtesy car while yours is being investigated - you should pay nothing but fuel.

This incident from AutoExpress magazine's long-term test of the same model as yours seems to be VERY similar to what you've experienced: an engine cut-out that's related to the ESC function. You might want to add this to your argument to the dealer.
