Land Rover Freelander 2 - Replace whole diff or just components - lindisfarne

My 09 reg 2010 model Freelander 2 has developed the dreaded rear diff noises at 70,000 miles.

A local (and very good) independent Land Rover specialist has said it needs a Land Rover exchange diff at a cost, including fitting, of £840 + vat. They say it's not worth taking the diff apart to replace components as they've found in 8 out of 10 cases it needs more than the simple fix that Land Rover says is required and ends up costing more than just replacing the whole diff in the first place.

My local Land Rover dealer says they have fixed quite a number of vehicles with this problem and never needed to fit a whole replacement diff. They say they will strip down the diff and replace the required components at a cost of £630 including vat.

So the difference between these two is about £380!

Which one should I believe and go for? I'd be grateful to hear other forum user's experiences.

Thanks

Ask each of them how long they'd guarantee their workmanship?

Setting up a crownwheel and pinion demands considerable time and skill, does your garage have this skill?

Why does a rear diff wear out on a part-time 4wd system.

Most of the time, the rear diff is handling zero power/torque as that's the nature of smart part-time systems - the road wheels are driving the prop-shaft most of the time - so why does it wear out ?

Think the Freelander 2 is RWD most of the time.

Really - that's very unusual for a transverse engine system - and can make the FWD versions hard to engineer.

When did Land Rover sneak that one past me, always thought that the Freelander was normally RWD but appears they are now based on a Mondeo.

The rear diff is in constant use irespective of the drive its driven by the wheels.

The Ford EUCD platform is used by Ford Galaxy, Mondeo, S-Max, Volvo S60, V60, XC60, V70, XC70, S80 and LR Freelander 2.

Some people, including me, call it the Ford Freelander as Ford did all the engineering, albeit at Solihull and Gaydon.

freelander 2 is more rear wheel drive than front.

I would speak to LR regarding rear diff as there has been many well known issues and many that have been repaired at independants have rolled onto drama.

If you have full LR service history you may well be able to make a claim for a good percentage

Whats causing these things to fail, are they another 'sealed for life' (joke) component, a relatively short life it appears...would periodic oil changes (as Toyota specify for their 4x4's) extend the life or are they just another LR weakness.

Everything appears to be a weakness on land rovers. Two large agents in my city have given up on them on gone onto Volvos and Ford only products there reasoning was they could not make a profit on them or keep there hard won customers happy .

How would that help - the Ford EUCD platform is used by Ford Galaxy, Mondeo, S-Max, Volvo S60, V60, XC60, V70, XC70, S80 and LR Freelander 2 - they all share transmissions and diesel engines and all major systems.
