Hatched box junction - barney100

I entered a yellow hatched bax junction which at it's end had traffic lights on green and my exit appeared clear. I just enter it and of course the lights go amber. Now Ihave a problem, if I stop in the box awaiting the lights to change I am breaking the law....if I go through the amber I'm breaking the law. I decided the safest thing was to stop and wait...what would others do?

Drive on....you must have passed the initial set of lights (ie. prior to entering the hatched section) on green surely.?

I don't know the exact length of the box, I entered the box as I said with the exit lights on green and as soon as was just in bingo the lights change to amber. The entry to the box from the direction I came has no lights at the start of it so basically it's a ganble as to wether you'll get through. Lights change instantly from green to amber..amber means stop. Drive through an amber light? morning officer.......

How big was this junction?, surely if you entered on green there should be enough time for you to exit before it turned red?. Unless of course, the exit was blocked when you entered?, in which case you shouldn't have entered.

Hard to say without seeing the junction or knowing how quickly the lights change, but if I entered such a junction, with a clear exit, on green, then the lights changed, I would have carried on.

Not red..amber, amber means stop. It takes a split second to go from green to amber. There was no one in front either. Interesting you would have run the amber.

There's one SE of Aylesbury on the A41 (the staggered junction between Broughton Lane & Bedgrove, i.e. crossing the 41 from BL onto B) that is quite simply impossible to avoid sitting on the hatches due to the rapidly-changing traffic light combo's.

If Thames Valley placed a camera there they would make an absolute fortune!

Perhaps they will if they read this...

I know that very well. I wouldn't say it's impossible - I can't recall ever blocking the box while on the A41. It's simple really, don't enter the box unless you are sure there is (or is going to be) room for you on the other side of it. Possibly trickier if you have come down Broughton Lane.

Problem is most people are idiots and just follow the car in front.

Should TVP enforce it, some people might actually start to think about their driving.

Nice work (the pic) Manatee.

Yes, I always approach it from Broughton Lane, so, virtually impossible to not be trapped within the box!

The stop line before the junction is the one that you stop at, where the first set of lights normally are placed . If you have crossed this line on amber you keep going - the 'second' set of lights at the exit of the junction are not a stop line.

I asked the traffic policeman who ran the speed awareness course today what was the correct course of action. He said to proceed through the lights, that was the priority over the hatched section.

Can the OP provide a street view link to site?

Surely the hatching is after the stop line. The lights on far side of junction are repeaters.

Interesting to see on streetview that two of the cars turning right off Broughton lane have blocked the hatching completely and appear to be stationary judging by their brake lights.

The hatched area is visible on google earth street view-''Waitrose- Basingstoke" and scroll down a little to the right. There seems to be room for about 5 cars in the hatched area with lights just before the exit. I have had time to have a good look at it on the computer but when you are driving remember you have to make an instant decision.
