Fiat Punto 2004 - Fifth gear selection - Happy Blue!

My son has a 2004 Fiat Punto Active 1.2 8v. It has the gear selector where you pull up a collar to get it into reverse.

He was a bit rough last week in putting the car into reverse and pulled off the gear knob. Now, despite putting the knob back on, the car will not go into fifth gear. All the other gears are fine.

I suspect this is something to do with the collar and it will be booked into a garage, but does anyone have any quick fixes?

Check the selctor cables,

they fit to the selector on the box using "horseshoe" clips and these are not up to abuse.

there's one on the remote selector too.

Is 5th gear on your son's car at the extreme right and forward, and reverse extreme right and back?

If so, it will be the collar that's the problem. You'd have to remove the gaiter on the gear lever to reveal the gate. From memory, pulling the collar lifts up a plastic stopper, which 'opens' the gate the reverse. The stopper has probably been misplaced and is blocking 5th.
