I am looking to purchase this car at £7.800 is there anything I should look out for? Any help will be greatly appreciated

Look at the relevant honest john review, specifically 'good and bad'. There seem to be plenty goes wrong with that age of 3 series, but specifically relating to that model there seems to be plenty of reports about ignition pack and coil failure.

It would help if you posted a link to the specific car you are looking at, so members can see the car and check the mot history.

Does it have to be a 3 series?

Prone to timing chain issues, these are very oil specific engines. Aftermarket suspension components also ruin the handling and ride. Buy only with a full BMW history with proof of annual oil changes and buy only if you're willing and able to continue this with a main dealer or genuine BMW specialist. Otherwise leave well alone. These are not reliable cars if neglected or poorly maintained. Post a link to the advert if you can. But generally I'd warn you off BMW. I've had nothing but bother with any I've owned or sold.
