Ford Focus - Focus 09 - Missing temperature pointer - Snake147
Hi,

First post here so go easy on me !!

Just bought an 09 Focus that has the temperature pointer (if that's what you call it !). Does anyone know if it's just a case of sourcing the actual pointer or will the entire gauge or even entire dash need replacing ?

I can get a picture uploaded if that would help ?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

When you say it is missing,is the needle broken or laying in the bottom of the dash pod.?The needle/pointers on these don't come off in a hurry. There are no user serviceable parts here other than s/hand.The big issue you will have is that the instrument pod contains the immobilser system for the car ,so a s/hand unit will not allow the engine to start.Forget new parts, that will cost approx £600 +.Best option would be to buy s/hand and get one of the auto electronic repair firms to transfer the car security info from your pod to the repalcement unit..

If the pointer has fallen off, you could easily get the glass of by firs removing the gray rim around it.
If it doesent work, you might have a sensor porblem.
You can check if you have a temperature digital signal by enering test menu:
Left of the steering wheel, on the lever with wich you control high/low beam press button and keep it presed wile you put ignition, than keep it presed untill menue show test. Then imediatly release and pres again.
Presin again takes you through test menu.
1.dial test. If you press again it takes you to 2.dash light indicators test . Keep presing it until you can see engine temp.
First test will shou you if dials are working, but engine temp will show if ecu is geting egine temp sensor signnal. If not temerature signal present, bad wires or sensor, most likely sensor

The pointer just isn't there, leaving an orange led constantly illuminated where the pointer would insert into the dash.

I will post up a picture in the morning. Thanks for the replies so far, much appreciated.

Rather than changing the instrument cluster, you could buy a multifunction unit which plugs into your OBD2 port (one of the functions this one, by Autool, does is engine temp).

www.amazon.co.uk/d/Car-Tools-Equipment/Autool-Mult...5

According to the description it has an overtemperature alarm! It does many other functions, but one of the reviews on amazon.com says it doesn't do MPH (only km/h).

One of the pics shows it displaying MPH, so I don't know which is right, but it does do engine temp and at £30.99 it's the cheapest and easiest option.

There are similar units made by Scangauge (more discrete), but cost more.

Thanks for the tip regarding the use of the OBD2 port.

Here is the link to picture of the gauge:

A previous owner has wrapped various interior in carbon fibre effect material, and is likely to have accessed the gauge, although no idea why the pointer/needle has been removed.

I though it strange that the orange led is constantly illuminated ?

"I though it strange that the orange led is constantly illuminated ?"

If the pointer was like the one in the petrol gauge, is it now possible the light provides illumination from behind the rather wide base of the needle?
