VW Golf VR6 - Claim against Halfords for breaking my Car - William Suthers

Not for publication

Hello,

In Aug 2016 Halfords tried to fit a new radio into my Golf and burnt out the live feed wire, resulting in significant damage to the wiring loom, rendering my car undriveable and uneconomical to repair.

I'm currently in discussions with them over a settlement claim as the figure they have offerred as the value of my car (prior to the damsge) is somewhat less than the comparables I have obtained.

I've now written to their CEO who has referred this to their legal team who so far (nearly 2 weeks) have not responded.

Welcome comments and thoughts on next steps. Cliam is below £10k.

Thanks

What was the age, mileage and condition of the car pre Halfords disaster? Did it have a full service record, was it completely standard and how much are you claiming it was worth and what have they offered? No details in your post so no one will be able to help

I like the way that the OP puts something as 'not for publication', and then posts it on an open forum.

There's huge variation in values for these. If it's a tatty old tarted up boy racer mobile its next to worthless (a few hundred quid) but if it's a nice low mileage car that's been properly maintained they can go for in excess of £5k so comparing another example isn't that simple.

You might get a more helpful answer if you told us - is this a claim through the Small Claims Court, through an ADR process as in their complaints policy, or through Halfords' complaints procedure itself?

Like an insurance write-off offer you want to dispute, you'll need to get evidence of prices for cars of the same model, condition, age, mileage - remembering that those are asking prices, not averages.

So it needs part of the wiring loom repairing/replacing and the cost of this work outweighs the value of the car??? Care to elaborate on this statement?

I suspect you feel the car is worth far in excess of its actual value and this is the stumbling block.

The comments on this thread are ridiculous.

Assuming that Halfords did cause damge to the OP's car while fitting a radio, they should be given the opportunity to repair that damage at no cost to the OP.

(The advisability of whether Halfords should be allowed anywhere near the car again is another question)

If they are unwilling or unable to repair the damage they caused, the OP should get it repaired professionally and send Halfords the invoice.

If Halfords dispute or default on that invoice, the OP should take out a small claim court action against them to recover the cost of the repair.

It doesnt matter whether the car is worth 50 quid, 5 grand or 50 grand - Halfords are responsible for the cost of repairing the damage.

Id agree with the above although point out, the OP said this happened in August 2016. Presumably the vehicle has since been scrapped?

I hear Judge Rinder offers a good if somewhat publicised arbitration service.

If you read the original post again you'll see that the car was not economical to repair and were in dispute over the valuation put on it as a write off. "In Aug 2016 Halfords tried to fit a new radio into my Golf and burnt out the live feed wire, resulting in significant damage to the wiring loom, rendering my car undriveable and uneconomical to repair. When asked to give any details after this they chose not to do so and we're left wondering if this was a heap of boy racered up garbage that was next to worthless and valued by Halfords insurer as such and an owner who had delusions of how much his car was worth. Very common on 90's metal right now.
