Volvo's have been Ford-based for a while, even after sale to Geely - it'll take time to restablish their reputation, not easy if they switch production to China.

There was a huge growth in diesel car sales in Sweden in recent years. Between 05-11 they grew from 10% to 62% of cars sold. I wonder therefore if all the trouble Volvo had regarding the poor reliability of the 1.6 PSA diesel they used in the C30/S40/V40/V70 has something to do with it.

The Swedish value reliability over all else plus they've a strong national pride so the weak engine combined with Chinese ownership surely has had a negative effect on the domestic market. I hope the newer homegrown Volvo 4cyl diesels prove to be as tough as the older D5's or they'll really suffer.

With the exception of the old XC90, the Volvos have been Ford-based for a considerable time - with many of their diesels coming from the PSA side of the Ford-PSA engine alliance
