A 57k mile 2002/52 Astra Convertible looked almost sensible at £7,200, but it had the 2.2 engine. So maybe most sensible buy of the day was an 83k mile 02 reg Astra 1.7DTI LS estate that went for £3,550.

Slightly less bargain-basement were a 69k mile 2001/51 Audi AllRoad 2.5TDI, sold for a high £18,000 and a 99k mile 2001Y Mercedes CLK 320 Avant Garde convertible, sold after a real bidding battle for £18,950; and a 17k mile 2001Y Mercedes V270CDI Elegance auto, bid to £16,900 provisional.

  £6,050 bought a 28k mile 2001Y 2.0 Zetec estate; £4,250 was top bid for a 50k mile 2001Y 1.8LX; all a Doom Blue 99k mile 2001Y 1.8LX could raise was £3,300 and a 93k but 02 reg 1.8 Zetec sold away for £4,650. Today, £10,250m was enough to buy a 72k mile 2001Y Audi A4 B6 TDI 130, handicapped somewhat by the old 5-speed manual box. A 118k mile 2000W BMW 323iSE finally sold away for a mere £6,100. But a 61k mile 2001X Lexus IS200 SE auto romped away from its high £9,600 reserve to sell for a staggering £11,100.

  A 22k mile 2001/51 2.7 with a hardtop sold for £18,500 in comparison to which a 13k mile 02 SLK 230 auto bid to a strong £21,800 in view of the new model just around the corner. A very nice car that didn’t sell in Top Car was a rare 74k mile 99T Audi A6 4.2 V8 Quattro with the even scarcer 7 seat option. That bid to a provisional £13,900. Next door a surprise appearance by a 1,900 mile 2003/53 reg new shape Lexus RX300, without Navigator, didn’t arouse the interest it would have done in Top Car, starting at £26k and running out of bids at £27k.

  150PS SEAT Ibiza FR Races Onto the Scene 5 Dec 2003 (News)
  SEAT has unveiled its latest and most sporty model in the Ibiza range, the Ibiza FR, which stands for 'Formula Racing'. The FR has a 110kW (150bhp) version of the VAG 1,8 20v turbo, as fitted to the base model Audi TT Roadster and coupe, and will reach the UK early in 2004. Kit includes five double-spoke, titanium-coloured 16-inch alloy wheels with the same smoky titanium colour on the door mirrors, headlamps and taillight housing, helps to define the sporty image of this car.

  Though, of course, there was nothing to stop that valuable hardtop finding its way onto a more desirable car such as a low mileage M3 cabrio. Same goes for Audi A3s. A 74,000 mile 2000W A3 TDI with more than a few dents made a massive £9,475. And old Golf TDIs remain a currency. A 77,000 mile 97P TDI GL estate started a bidding battle and ended up selling for a serious £3,875.

  Heavy-duty executives stayed strong with a 71,000 mile 99S MB E280 Avant Gard selling for £12,000 and a 74,000 mile 2000V BMW 523iSE (steel liner block) making a solid £11,650. Closest to bargain of the day had to be an 85,000 mile 97P Audi A8 2.8 Sport. Okay, I know it was a leggy P reg, but £6,450 didn’t seem out of order for so much motor.   Yet the most a 7,000 mile 2001X Freelander 2.5 V6 GS auto could manage was £15,000. VAG diesel values are becoming more badge dependent. A 68,000 mile 98R Audi A4 TDI 110 Avant sold for a resounding £8,800. Which was rather more than the mere £5,850 raised by an 83,000 mile 98R VW Passat TDI 110 SE. Low bid of the day to my mind, though, was £4,450 bid for a very smart and clean, pale gold 98R Omega 2.5 V6 CDX estate.

  It wasn't the only VAG car to do well in the VW Financial Services section. A 39,000 mile 99S Audi A4 TDI 110 SE Avant romped away to a resounding £12,050. A 42,000 mile 98R Passat 1.8SE in a nice metallic blue sold for £7,300 (Mondeos the same age and mileage are £4,500). A 52,000 mile 97P Golf Mk III VR6 3-door in Mystic Blue made £7,950.

  A clean and tidy 45,000 mile 98S Vectra 1.8 Arctic in metallic blue sold for £5,550; a silver 19,000 mile 2000V Citroen Xsara LX HDI 90 sold for £7,700; a metallic blue 60,000 mile 99S BMW 318iS coupe sold for £11,575; a metallic blue 35,000 mile 98S Audi A3 T Sport sold for £12,100; and a Glacier Green 70,000 mile 98S BMW 523iSE auto made a very strong £12,500. But new model blight meant that Mercedes previously cast iron residual values took a knock in the case of a 14,000 mile 2000W C180 Classic with alloy wheels, a/c and cruise control.

  Named the Octavia RS, it has the same 1.8 litre 20v 180bhp turbocharged engine as the LEON and the Audi TT, giving it a similar top speed of 146mph. Its suspension is lowered and stiffened. While inside it has sports seats are trimmed in leather and metallic mesh upholstery, steel pedals, steel rimmed dials and leather covered hand brake and gear knob.

Despite these high prices, someone did quite well to pick up an uncatalogued 16,000 mile 99T Peugeot 306 2.0 Convertible for £10,200 (£2k under trade book), while Daewoos problems ensured that £2,150 was enough to buy a 41,000 mile 97R Lanos 1.4 3-door.
