  • Clutch burnt out in 700 miles 25 May 2013 (Ask HJ)
My dad's new Skoda Fabia needs a new clutch after just 700 miles and the Skoda dealer says this is not covered by warranty as it is wear and tear - but...
  • Renault Clio II 1.2 Petrol '99 - Clio 1.2 has intermittent starting issues 8 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Call the AA, wait 20 mins, by the time they arrive, it will start again and then drive perfectly fine to another 3 weeks or so. In reality, the not starting issues are random and can happen any time, but usually a few weeks apart. It will usually start from cold, but after a short drive of say 8 miles, if you switch off, then go to start, it will also have this problem.
  • KIA Magentis - To buy or not to buy? 26 Dec 2012 (Forum)
I just went to pick up my new (2007) Kia Magentis (2.7 V6 Auto) having had a good test drive a few days ago. But as I went to drive it out of the showroom it squealed like a little pig, well actually it was more like a great big huge pig! Really loud and sustained. It certainly didn't do this when we went for a test drive.
  • Ford Focus - Focus battery warning light 5 Feb 2012 (Forum)
When I'm starting it from cold, revs will drop and it will cut out with the battery light on unless I sit for a couple of mins with my foot on the accelerator. If I drive away without doing this it will cut out the first time I take my foot off the accelerator. In general it seems to drive OK, but a couple of times the battery light has come on for a few seconds and then goes out.
  • Peugeot 406 HDi (110) 200 X reg - 406 Gremlins / Not Starting 23 Nov 2011 (Forum)
Hi All, My Old man borrowed the keys to my 406 last weekend, gave him the spare rather than the plip, and after driving 20 miles, stopping (engine off) to hitch a trailer, starting, driving 150 yds or so and stopping again to load up, car would then not restart. Thinking it might be the key/immobiliser I went with the plip key and locked/unlocked with plip before trying to start but still no joy.
  • Citroen Berlingo Multispace 1.9 diesel, 2005 - PAS goes very stiff in hot weather 26 Aug 2011 (Forum)
I did wonder if the drive belt wasn't driving the auxilliaries (including the steering pump) properly since we recently had to change the battery because it was almost dead flat, but a voltage check from the alternator showed approx. 14v however, at the time, the weather wans't quite so hot and the engine compartment wasn't either.
  • Citroen Xantia - Turbo Diesel - Advice / Opinions on cheapie! 24 Aug 2011 (Forum)
Obviously I will need it to drive ok as I will be driving it to the builders yard / rubbish tip etc.   Anything I got to look out for? How do I check the suspension is ok? Also the 3rd gear crunches if you change fast, its ok when done slowly (so the owner tells me)   Come on guys...what you think?
  • In-Car Entertainment: USB ports'n'stuff 23 May 2011 (Forum)
My question is this: how does this work? I'm used to downloading stuff onto USB pen-drives (if that's what they're called).  I'm also used to downloading music from i-tunes and playing them on my desktop.  Can I just copy music files from my PC onto my USB pen-drive, then plug it into the car stereo, and "Hay Presto!"
  • Audi A3 Sportback - New Car for Motorway Driving 7 Apr 2011 (Forum)
(I tested a 2.0 TDI Scirocco, and whilst I loved the car, the boot was terrible for getting things in and out of!) -Comfortable for long range driving (I do 200 mile round trips at least once a week) -Mainly for use on the motorway, so picking up speed between 50 and 80 is very important to me Those are my main concerns.  Fuel economy is a bonus, but not essentail as I am fortunate enough to have a Fuel card.
  • Ford Fiesta - Ford Fiesta Fuel Consumption 18 Feb 2011 (Forum)
I beileve the tracking and tyres are now fine but the fuel consumption is not. Most annoying the fuel consumption is not very good, across all types of driving, short distances to long motorway runs it has never achieved better than 300miles per tank. Mostly the driving we do in the car is 6 miles each end of the day to the train station and then longer runs (150 miles+) at the weekends, this mix of driving conditions still means we end up with a fuel consumption of 29-30 mpg.
  • Peugeot 207 - Fire damage 14 Nov 2010 (Forum)
I have obviously told my insurance who are in talks with Pug. My question is will this be a write off? Can I refuse the car back as I wil not drive the car I don't trust the workmanship and don't want the car setting on fire again? To be honest I dont want the car back now. Insurance have asked for V5, copy of driving licesne, service history and keys etc.
  • Why are gear changes becoming difficult in my 2002 Ford Mondeo? 17 Jul 2010 (Ask HJ)
I have a problem with engaging gears in my 2002 Ford Mondeo TDCI. When the engine is off, gears shift well but when I start the car I can't put a gear...
  • Peugeot 607 - 607 3.0 Auto 'Clonks' into Reverse Gear 31 May 2010 (Forum)
I tried it several times and everytime I selected reverse the same jolt happened. I then put the car into Drive and with my foot on the brake again, it didn't feel as though the car wanted to creep forward. The car seemed to drive okay into the auction hall but I was a bit worried about the clang when I put it into reverse?
  • Idiot driving Aston Martin Vanquish - Bristol 16 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I don't usually start threads about individual cases of bad driving I come across, but this one in Bristol is worth the effort. I was using a very tricky sliproad where there's limited visibility of traffic approaching from behind on the dual carriageway I was about to join.
  • Hyundai i20 (2009) - advice re ESP 1 May 2009 (Forum)
Reasoning as follows : a) Main driver will be my wife - given that she spends most of her time driving around town quite sedately and doesn't push her car anywhere near its limits, I'm not sure it's really of much use to her, especially on a car with only a 1.2 engine; b) In due course, I'm expecting my kids to learn to drive on this car.
  • Vauxhall Omega (1994 - 2003) - 02 2.2 rise and fall on front seats 26 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Although there is a live feed to both motors and when the raise and lower switch is pressed the motor clicks and tries to operate, there is no movement on the drive spindle on either seat. This fault occurred at the same time on both seats and may possibly have been caused by my wife hoovering under the seats. However I have checked thoroughly underneath and can find no trace of any broken connection and as the motor attempts to drive and there is not a blown fuse in the circuit it appears that in some way the drive has been locked.
  • Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 1998 2.0 Loss of braking while driving? 5 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Good morning all, I had a major problem last night. Iwas driving back from Legoland to Southampton and I started hearing a "suction noise" while accelerating? Only when accelerating. Monitored warning lights, temperature etc but everything here seemed to be ok.
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 2003 1.9Tdi 130PD Auto tiptronic problem 23 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I'd be grateful if anyone could help me diagnose my gearbox problem (without mentioning that I should be going to the dealer for a diagnostic test). The car at present drives perfectly when in auto (or tip) but when I stop and change into neutral the car jerks. When I put it into reverse or drive, sometimes on computer the gear select square that highlights the gear that I am in changes and all the squares (i.e.
  • Alfa Romeo 147 (2001 - ) - 2001 1.6 Not switching over to LPG 11 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I have an unusual problem where sometimes the car will not switch over to LPG. It will attempt to but fails and cuts out, this sometimes happens from a cold start (I will be driving along and all of a sudden it will just cut out) or if the car has just switched over to LPG and then turned off and left for 10 - 15 mins (The car will start but after a few seconds it will just cut out) I have to turn the LPG off immediately and drive on Petrol (on one occasion, I was going around a bend and it decided not to switch to LPG and almost caused me to crash!)
  • Mitsubishi i-car (2007 - ) - Mitsubishi i-car 3 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Saw one of these cute little things in the local dealer, and had a test drive yesterday. Surprisingly nice to drive; the 660 cc engine is turbocharged, mounted in the rear (it is rear wheel drive). Ride is better than the Smart car, and so is the gearbox - a proper automatic instead of the jerky semi-auto in the Smart.
