  • SEAT Toledo III (2005 - ) - 05 2.0 Valuation of car needing new gearbox 26 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I have been told the box can not be repaired (can't get parts) so needs to replaced. The all in quote to replace the box with a new one is £3500. The car is 4 years old and has done 82k, so a sensible valuation with a working gearbox is £5500. So my dilemma is what to do, get it repaired or try to sell it? If I try to sell it, what am I likely to get for it how long will it take?
  • Peugeot service record incorrectly stamped 30 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Hi Guys, I don't know where my earlier post went, so trying again... I had my car serviced today at a Peugeot dealer. I had the 60 000 service done at 50 000 (car is 7 years old). But the techinician had stamped the 80 000 box on the following page of the service book! When I complained, the lady tippexed this box out, filled in the correct box and attached a note to the book, on their letter head, explaining why this was done.
  • Nissan TIIDA/Versa (2006 - ) - on sale up here -where from?? 9 Sep 2009 (Forum)
I notice a dealer in Scotland selling Nissan Tiida 1.6 with warranty until Mar 2012 at 8995. Not that I am looking atone, but there is no mention of this car on Nissans website, so where are they coming from? As far as I was aware they were not sold in Europe at all. Also anyone buying one, surely spares will be a major league PITA. In saloon form not pretty, but the hatch looks OK and my old man had one as a hire car in South Africa last year said it was great.
  • Passed on M40 18 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I had occasion to go to Oxford yesterday and on way back I was tootling along at 70 when a Ford 375 Consul passed me - now that was a shock as my old Zodiac never felt safe at that speed - it was the grubbiest one I have ever seen - painted matt black with painted on cat paw marks- the rear number plate was missing so not sure of year - anyway I had to pass it just for pride sake - then further on I passed a car towing a hot rod not in too good condition either - then getting close to Warwick turn I passed a nice looking pink 50's Buick - very low to ground (my type of car) - so anyone any idea what event these cars might have been to?
  • Ford Fusion (2002 - 2008) - 2004 1.4TDi - Suspension coil spring snapped 29 Jul 2009 (Forum)
This seems to me to be a safety issue (at least potentially) and in forty years of owning numerous new and old cars I have never experienced a coil spring snapping on any vehicle. Has anyone a similar experience particularly with the Fusion please?
  • USA flydrive - car choice 24 Jul 2009 (Forum)
We've just paid a deposit for a flydrive holiday in western USA next year; it will be our first time and we've decided to take the easy option of going for one of Virgin's packages, with one or 2 minor alterations. As there's only 3 of us (2 adults + 12 year old) we've just gone for an 'economy' grade car which the brochure says is a Chevrolet Aveo or similar. I appreciate this is going to be fairly basic, but I like the idea of keeping (petrol) costs down.
  • Volkswagen Passat (1997 - 2000) - 99 2.0 Car won't start - starting motor replaced 21 May 2009 (Forum)
That's it. We did notice the old motor had 10-teeth compared to the 9-teeth on the new one but we spoke to Bosch who advised this should be ok. We have very few symptoms to work with so I was lookign for some advice about diagnosis of the issue.
  • How did Ford gain a massive UK share? 8 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I know this share is falling in recent years but somebody has given me a Which guide to cars from 1991 and it states that Ford have 25% of the market (probably not even 10% now). When you consider the awful cars of 1991, the MK3 Fiesta (was ok but no 205), the original pre modified Escort MK5 (the worst car Ford ever made?)
  • Do they REALLY crush unlicensed cars? 29 Jan 2009 (Forum)
The engine capacity indicates it's a 16 year old hot hatch- a prime candidate for crushing. They could even be stolen plates. I told the police, but my suspicion is that they'll do nothing about it and I'll eventually see the same occupants driving the same way around here again.
  • Rover 200 and 400 (1989 - 1996) - Electrical fault 1.4 petrol DOHC 10 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I was travelling at around 40 mph when the car experienced a virtual total electrical failure. At first the breakdown mechanic suspected a battery failure, he connected a battery booster and it no effect. The battery is only about a year old I had no problem starting the car about 5 minutes early.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 2001 1.4 peugeot immobiliser chips 17 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Hi Guys Just a quick one, can peugeot immobiliser chips in key fobs be reprogrammed or can the car be forced to take a new chip The reason i ask, lost my key the other day, a mate had an old key which he gave to me, i have had the blade copied and yes i know the car wont start because of the immobiliser.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1997 1.3 Where to get car serviced? 13 Sep 2008 (Forum)
My car could do with a service the plugs are getting onto 18 months old and the oil has not been changed for 11k. I want the gaps checked on the plugs and replaced if needed and also the oil changed. I will do the rest myself.

  • SEAT Altea (2004 - ) - Dodgy garage ? Has my car really been serviced ? 4 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I had my car services today at a Seat main dealer. It is a two year old Seat Altea 1.9TDi Reference Sport. I am not convinced the garage has done much at all as they had it for not much longer than an hour. I popped the bonnet and had a cursory look at the oil on the dip stick.
  • Mercedes Benz 190/190E 1.8/2.0 W201 (1983 - 1993) - Yet another car... 14 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Any tints and hips from ex-owners or knowledgeable types? First impressions are that they appear to be indestructible.... I am thinking it is old-school over-engineered Merc!
  • Diesel versus petrol - misfuelling 28 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I am considering buying a 3 year old Honda Accord diesel. While I am really attracted by the better mpg and more accessible torque of diesel over petrol, I am concerned about various comments I have seen on here and elsewhere regarding long term reliability / cost of maintaining diesels and, in particular, the danger of putting petrol into a diesel car.
  • Vitara 2L V6 cutting out 12 Jun 2007 (Forum)
My Dad has owned a 1995 Vitara as above since it was six months old. I have always hated those cars but he liked it and it's now his 'runabout' second car. I borrowed it at the weekend and found that more often than not when pulling up to a junction the engine revs would drop off and the engine would die.
  • Weird Radio Problem 24 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I've got a Kenwood head unit fitted to my car. It's about 10 years old and has given perfect service since I have had the car (2 years). Yesterday whilst driving the right hand set of speakers stopped working as I was listening to the radio.
  • Ford Extended Warranty 16 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Hi, I have got a 10 Months old Focus 1800 TDCi which we love. Ford have sent details about extended the warranty to 5 years or 100k for £500 with QBE. The warranty has to be taken out in the 1st year or 20k and includes 7 days car hire after the 1st 24 hours..
  • Mondeos at Auction (again!) 19 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Both went for approximately £2500. This seems very cheap. Is this because there was something about these particular cars that the trade were aware of, or are Mondeos really that cheap? I was looking to maybe go down the bangernomics route mentioned in another thread here, but if a 3 year old car that looks and drive well is so cheap, why bother?
