  • Peugeot - 2.0 Hdi power loss, EGR, Turbo? 2 Nov 2015 (Forum)
Took it to his pal who had more technical equipment and his apparently diagnosed an intermittant fault with the EGR. They put some fuel additive in the car and reset the fault memory and have asked him to drive it about for a few days to see if it has made any difference. I drove it today and it is still the same. I gave it an Italian tune-up but that didn't seem to make any difference (a one-off probably wouldn't anyway) From what I know of EGR(very little) they can be susceptible to round-town stop-start journeys which my dad has done a lot of over the years he has had the car.
  • Citroen Xantia - vibration in a Xantia 20 May 2015 (Forum)
Also can be felt at lower speeds too though not as bad. Engine has loads of power under load, and is fine on fuel.  As its nice to drive (and I don't care about the paint) I am willing to put some money into it but not enough to turn it into a money pit.
  • Larger Estate - Another Petrol v Diesel question! - with specifics 9 Feb 2015 (Forum)
I drive at 70-80 on the motorway. - I reckon I cover no more than 6000k miles a year. I'm not sure which fuel the distances I cover are best suited to. I have heard some Petrol, as they are relatively short distances, although I heave heard others say that the diesel engine will run better from cold. I also would like power available to me, without having to worry that it's going to cost me a fiver everytime I overtake somebody.
  • Renault Grand Scenic III 1.5 dci (106) 2010 - Renault Grand Scenic III 1.5 dci very poor MPG 24 Jan 2015 (Forum)
And also, not sure if two things have anything to do with each other, when I start the car from cold it produces for short while quite a lot of white smoke from exhaust To other owners of G.Scenics 1.5dci - what kind of fuel economy are you getting from your cars? Thank you all for any help
  • Ford Focus Ghia 2002 - 1.8 tdci - Flashing Glow PluG Light 17 Sep 2014 (Forum)
They have said 'oh it was just the turbos were blocked so have put a diesel engine cleaner in the fuel and it has sorted it'. From reading the posts on here i doubt this would solve the issue or could it be as simple as this?  I am due to pick the car up again tomorrow. Any suggestions?
  • Any. - Reasonably priced reliable commuter vehicle. 9 Aug 2014 (Forum)
In addition each of my diesel cars have had major breakdowns (diesel related) that have cost a fortune to put right. ( negating any fuel saving and more) My wife has a fiesta ecoboost that is fantastic and I can manage 50-55 mpg on my commute but will cost more than I'm willing to spend. My main requirements are a car under 4 years old that has 5 doors, air con, ESP, a full array of airbags and a reasonable boot.
  • Toyota Avensis - 1.8 V-Matic thoughts/opinions 21 Apr 2014 (Forum)
My requirements: I  need a replacement car, and the main thing for me is cost (fuel/running) and reliability.  I want something economical to run, extremely reliable, without the worry of anything (especially expensive things) going wrong. I cover approx 15,000 miles a year, mainly motorway commute (which could raise to 20,000).

  • Ford Fiesta - Charging £500+ extra for 'standard' engine 29 Oct 2013 (Forum)
The data show that the low power 60 PS (artificially 'limited' engine) offers much slower acceleration and lower top speed but identical official government fuel economy and CO2 figures so there is no VED advantage for the low power version. However the performance (and £500 price difference) is sufficient to bump up the insurance group from 4 to 7 for the 82 PS version.
  • Vauxhall Corsa C - Corsa CDTI 2005 - Cold morning start problems 18 Sep 2013 (Forum)
It has an EGR Value light/diagnostics test warning but the car drives fine and the mechanic says maybe the EGR value just needs a clean. I have been informed there is the slighest Diesel leak by the fuel pump - not dripping but when you wipe your finger near the pump then is residue on the finger. I have changed the glow plugs twice and had the conductors check and all is fine. I cant see it being the battery as this has been going on for a year and a half now and the battery is being charged by a working alternator.
  • Citroen Xsara Picasso - Consider buying or walk away? 17 May 2013 (Forum)
It also has a lovely panoramic sunroof that I love.  It's a 1.6i 16v petrol but we aren't bothered about engine size or fuel.  It's up for £2,999 but the owner needs a quick sale and took £500 off with no persuasion! BUT...this one is having the speedo sensor replaced under warranty on Friday.
  • Reports of my rental car (again) 28 Mar 2013 (Forum)
In the Astra there are so many buttons on the central console the Space Shuttle was probably easier to control. The real bugbear is the fuel gauge.  I filled up at an attended service station tonight.  On restarting the car, the gauge took 20 minutes to rise from almost empty to full.  How odd.  Is this normal??
  • Please help me choose a car for a long commute 6 Jan 2013 (Forum)
My budget is 8k...for this I've looked at the following: Mondeo 2.0 TDI - Great value for money but the MPG is only mid 40s which would cost around £800 extra per year in fuel. BMW 5 series - would be looking at a high mileage car. Problems seem to be occuring around the 100k mark (and before in some cases) on these cars with DPF which look expensive.
  • Ford Mondeo - Any other large petrol car suggestions 24 Aug 2012 (Forum)
It is still on the original clutch and exhaust and other than the usual tyres, brake parts, etc not too much has gone wrong. Biggest repair was a fuel pump. I bought it at 3 years old. So while it is still running and just got through it's MOT  with only a tyre and a drop link needed I can't help thinking it's on borrowed time.  So partly because it's got to need more repairs going forward and partly jusy because it's scruffy and I can afford to replace it without finance next year I've started thinking what next?

I have the car in this weekend to MRC Tuning who are installing new injectors, fuel pump (it's done 100k miles!). Not sure if the injector amplifiers come with the new injectors but we'll have to wait and see. The car has already blown a HG when cylinder number 1 head cracked and leaked oil round the seal.
  • Nissan Almera 1.5se (2004) - Nissan Almera engine management light problems 1 Feb 2012 (Forum)
This light was on all the time we were there, then on our way back home a few days later the exhaust started blowing, We got the middle and back replaced on the exhaust but the light was still on, I asked the garage to see what codes it was bringing up as at this point the car was hesitating on accellaration when I  first  start it  up on a morning, It came up with three codes, air flow sensor, Oxygen sensor and one other thing that i can't remember but it had something to do with fuel?! They decided it was the air flowq sensor cleaned it out and the light stayed off for about a week, I took it back in and they were convinced the air flow sensor needed replacing, They quoted £270, we bought the part our selves (genuine bosch from euro car parts) and done it ourselves, a day later the hesitating returned and the light comes on every now and again particularly when we have been driving the car continuosly for half an hour or more.
  • Ford Focus 51 plate 1600 auto 130,000 miles - Focus electrical problems is it terminal ? 22 Jan 2012 (Forum)
It happened again today, and today I noticed that a relay in the auxillary relay box in the engine unit was also clicking rapidly. I norrowed this down the R7, the fuel pump relay. Recently we have had a new battary and a new altinator. We do get a lot of "furring" deposits on the positive side of the battery, even after the altinator replacement. The car was parked on the street so I jumped the car and it started OK with jump leads and I got parked on the drive turned if off and tried to start it , back to the clicking central locking.
  • Car for commuting 13 Jan 2012 (Forum)
I've been tempted by the idea of downsizing, on the basis that I would save money on the upcoming repairs, and for not much outlay I can get a newer small car, which in theory would be more reliable and save significantly on tax and insurance, and perhaps a little on the actual fuel costs. For a maximum of £4k the favourite at the moment is a Panda or Yaris, both diesel versions. Does anyone have any thoughts on either of these and how they would compare both to each other and to the Bora?
  • Any - Dealer Satisfaction when ordering next car 6 Jan 2012 (Forum)
With the various issues I have had with my car since purchased, all fixed under warranty i must add, and the fact that I have been more than satisfied with the car in the past 18 months, I am less than satisfied with the main dealer for things other than the warranty, ie service parts not available, (no air filter in stock) a problem getting hold of a spare key, but sorted when I made a 140 mile round trip to another dealer here in south wales who had the key in stock and was kind enough to knock £30 off the cost which was enough to pay for the fuel used. My local vauxhall (network Q) have been servicing the car, twice this year plus intermediate oil change when "change oil now light" came on, another oil change due at 30,000 because i don't trust the dpf regeneration system even though it appears to be working properly, so to avoid a sump contaminated with diesel, I am doing supplementary oil change @ 5000 miles, with each main service every 10000, I have no problem with the costs of the serving at all.
  • Peugeot 406 HDi - Peugeot 406 2.0 HDI anti polution fault 5 Dec 2011 (Forum)
The "fault" Is on and off like Jordan's relationships. At the same time, there's diesel dripping out of a fuel ine feeding into / out of, what I assume is (a 70mm x 40mmx 40mm oblong plastic case with a 2 pin connector) the pressure regulator solonoid, above the pressure rail (Bosch system), although no 'diesel experts' seem to recognise this discription, but one is going to look at it the leak problem in the next few days.
