  • Allow overtaking on both sides? 15 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I experienced this in Australia and it works fantastically. Traffic keeps moving, a lot less anger, and more fluid driving.

  • Small/Medium/Large Automatics 30 May 2003 (Forum)
I've heard various blokes in various pubs profess that automatic transmission is a variably desirable option, depending on the capacity of the engine driving it (ie. small auto = ok, large auto = fine, medium autos = pants). Can any BR'ers offer any technical guidance as to why this might be the case? I'm thinking in terms of power/torque curves, not efficiency.
  • Transmission troubles - Fiat Punto 3 May 2003 (Forum)
I took it to fiat Dealer they said that the problem is either with the gearbox or powder clutch but they were not sure and they asked me to keep on driving until it stops. I dont know what to do. Can anybody help please!!!!
  • Rental cars in Germany 11 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I'm not old enough for the SL (you have to be 27) What if I told you the SL was cheaper for a weekend by about £20? (About £220 - one of the cheapest ways known to drive serious performance cars, seriously fast, is to go to Germany and rent them from Sixt or Europcar)
  • Back Ache astra seats 30 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Help! I've recently changed from a mondeo to an Astra ls, I drive 1000 + miles a week and I am suffering. Back ache, side ache, I've never driven such an uncomfortable car. Any thoughts on a 3rd party support I could purchase to help ease my problems? The mondeo never gave my any back problems.
  • Alternative to Salvage Squad 26 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Seeing the thread on SS, and not watched the tape yet I visited the BR tomight wondering what you all had to say about the show on the other channel. Well seeing as there is nothing I guess, like me, words fail you regarding Celebrity Driving School. Totally pink fluffy dice [1] abysmal! [1] put that in to save you the trouble Mark!
  • ford focus 30 Jan 2003 (Forum)
now then, the initial reviews impress for driving experience. but i'm concerned on reliability, the list is massive on the car by car breakdown. is it just the fact their is so many, or are they no way near as reliable as a honda, toyota, mazda or nissan, because thats the type of reliability i need in a medium sized car that doesn't look dated.
  • Ugly 8 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Also, at risk of people shouting at me, I'm pretty surprised by Lord Irvine's comments regarding burglars and society's supposed view that a lack of a prison sentence is OK. The consequential punishments dealt would be equivalent to certain driving offences where there are no aggravating factors..
  • Social, Domestic and...., er, Pleasure? 30 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Faced with more than two hours commuting a day; trips to the supermarket, DIY stores, IKEA; kids' events etc, I'm not sure I can fit it in! Maybe I should ask for a reduction in my insurance premium if I promise not to drive 'for pleasure' :-)
  • Camber & castor adjustment in the SE 26 Jun 2002 (Forum)
Does anyone here know of anywhere in south east London or Kent that could do this for me? I dont really want to drive all the way to Micheldever tyres. Ben.
  • Astra MK2 Wheel bearing 6 May 2002 (Forum)
My 90 H Astra nearside front wheel has started making a kind of "throbbing" noise when i drive along. It is not a grinding noise but sounds as if something could be rubbing intermitantly. Could it be the wheel bearing? if so how much to replace, and can i fit it easily or do i need a garage to do it?

  • re: valuations 27 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Happy to say the Civic has now been moved on, at a price of £5,000 - just a little less than I had been hoping for. Also thanks to HJ for his published advice re how to prepare, advertise, answer phonetest drive, negotiate, accept payment, etc. All good stuff.
  • Golf keeps cutting out 17 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Ive cleaned the terminals and its showing 12.8volts and 13.5v with the engine running. It cuts out during night driving i.e when all the electrics are at full stretch. Can the experts point me in the right direction Battery, Alternator ?. Thanks for any assistance John
  • Dealer Stickers/Badges 5 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Something totally totally unimportant which I have wondered about for years. Why do people drive around for *ever* with those free adverts for the supplying dealer in the back window? Plus has anyone ever taken to task a dealer who supplies the car, not just with a placky sticker in the rear screen but an actual advertising badge stuck on the boot lid/rear panel?
  • Collecting new car - anything I should check for? 11 Jul 2001 (Forum)
I'm collected my new car this week, but have never had a brand new one before. Are there any specific things I should check for before driving off the forecourt? Do I lose any rights if I haven't spotted something before I leave? Hope someone can help (again).
  • Tyre speed ratings 17 Jan 2001 (Forum)
H, V, W, ZR) are much more costly than those rated for lower speeds, plus the extremely low or zero probability of driving at anywhere near the maximum speeds for those ratings (e.g. 130 mph for H), would fitting tyres at lower speed ratings than those recommended in the car's handbook be wise or foolish?
  • Yuasa battery question 27 Aug 2025 (Forum)
Since March it has performed perfectly. It failed suddenly whilst driving, luckily close to a local and trusted garage.  So the question is simply, are Halfords right? The "techie" guys at the MR2 club have strong views, but then they often do! Hence seeking a more balanced and nuanced opinion.
  • 125k '16, this gen, pSH vs 95k, FSH, last gen '15 1 Sep 2024 (Forum)
2016 has a smaller engine, but given the use case (<15 min commute, mostly down an A road, weekend trips away and some country driving) that is fine. Car will be used for a lapsed driver (~5 years since having driven, and a new driver - still learning - will be dropped off to work until they are confident driving). I'm leaning towards the newer model, smaller engine for the extra features, but unsure how 25k miles and partial SH will affect value.
