Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 1999 1.8 Rear brake overheating. 12 Oct 2008 (Forum)
First - replaced the wheel bearing, shoes and drums. Second - replaced the wheel bearing, adjusted brakes and handbrake. Third, replaced brake adjusters, set up brakes, tested it on the rolling road, result was ok... for a day. IT NOW GETS HOT AGAIN AFTER JUST A FEW MILES!! Anyone know what it could be, how to fix it, OR wants a cheap Focus? -
VW Passat brake warnings 6 Dec 2005 (Forum)
One for thos of you who know how brake warning systems/fault code readers work. Have a 98R Passat 20V which has occasionally been displaying warning lights/sounding buzzers for the ABS (orange light) and the whole brake system (red light). -
Volvo V70 2.5 Brakes 4 Aug 2005 (Forum)
A mate of mine has a 1999 Volvo V70 Estate Auto with the 2.5 10v engine. Recently it has developed a brake problem. Over the last week the brake pedal travel has increased, yet the car stops safely. We have checked the following; disc and pad thickness and DTV - all are text book and the pads have plenty of meat left on them, all flexible hoses are sound and are NOT ballooning up when brake pedal is pressed. -
Peugeot 206 CC Brakes 8 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Over the past 7 months I have had several problems which have been fixed but for some reason my local \'friendly!!\' Peugoet dealer cannot seem to fix the screcching noise coming from my front brakes. So far In September they \'DE-GLAZED?\' the brake pads that came with the car, this did not work so it was suggested that I either put up with the noise or buy new brake pads. So I bought the new brake pads. -
Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - 00 1.8 Intermittent Shuddering brakes problem! 17 Feb 2010 (Forum)
This is very sporadic; 95% of the time the brakes are very taut and feel almost as new - but every now and again when braking the pedal jerks and shudders under my foot, accompanied with a very clunky sound and not a lot in the way of actual braking happening! -
Citroen AX (1987 -1997) - 96 954cc poor braking 17 Dec 2008 (Forum)
The brakes are not spongy and the pedal doesn't need to be pumped and doesn't have excessive travel. If you roll down the driveway slowly and touch the pedal, all the four corners will brake with just a slight press, but any speed they are rubbish, ikt's like very bad brake fade but at slow speed, i daren't try them at high speed. -
Vauxhall Ast - Charge of defective brakes - rubber pedal cover 20 Jul 2018 (Forum)
In January I had an accident. It was pouring rain and my car span when coming off a roundabout. At the time the police said my brake pedal should have had a rubber cover and it did not. I wasn’t aware of this. Today I have received notice that I have been charged for having defective brake - however the report from the police is inaccurate - particularly stating that my foot slipped on the brake when this is not the case and actually I tried to brake and the car just span - I think because of the weather and possible aquaplaining. 1. -
Sachs brake pads terrible! 11 Feb 2017 (Forum)
My Fiat Panda's 1.2 2005 front brake pads is not great, it feels sort like a soft pedal under hard braking and more effort to stop quickly than the previous pads was with when I bought the car, the name of pads is made by Sachs are this the rubbish one? -
AEB braking systems 8 Aug 2016 (Forum)
I have read elsewhere that some of these Automatic/Autonomous Emergency Braking systems on lorries have applied full emergency braking when triggered falsely by road signs/fence posts on bends and other conditions. Some systems are evidently supposed to flash a warning to the driver and only apply brakes if he doesn't react by a dab on the brakes but don't always. -
Vauxhall New Meriva - Meriva Electric parking brake & hill starts 22 May 2014 (Forum)
Have just bought a used 11 Reg Meriva with the electric parking brake, but no 'Hill Start Assist'. Has anyone got any advice on doing hill starts on very steep hills? We've followed the instructions in the manual for just driving off and letting it release the brake automatically, which is fine on flat surfaces and slight inclines, but we live in area surrounded by steep hills. -
Citroen C3 semi-automatic - Left-foot braking 26 Jan 2013 (Forum)
On this car (semi-automatic with an automated clutch), if you left-foot brake with the throttle open, there is an almighty thud from the transmission, the engine unwinds to idle (c. 1000 rpm) and refuses to answer the throttle pedal for a good 30 seconds. The selling garage's service chap said, 'why would you want to brake whilst accelerating?' -
Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - 01 brake imbalance MOT failure, no diagnosis 13 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Everything else is perfect, in every way, just this issue. It does seem to be pulling to the left on braking, more so on harder braking. {Moved across to Technical Matters} -
Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 94 1.8 Bleeding Brakes! 29 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Hello, I've just replaced the rear drum brakes on the above car. The piston escaped (Rear-left brake) and brake fluid was lost - so i've tried to bleed the system - unsucessfully! I've done it the haynes way with two people until the girlfriend got bored. -
Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 2003 TDi - Brake Warning message on dash display 16 Nov 2007 (Forum)
I have a 2003 Passat estate diesel. Every now and then, couple of months, the warning on the dash comes up 'Brake warning stop now' or words to that effect. It comes up lasts for a minute or so and then goes off until the next time, which could be ages. It has done this a couple of times, once before I had the brakes renewed, which I presumed was low fluid level as the brakes were very worn, so I topped it up. -
Fiesta Mk3 1.1 NO BRAKES!! 10 Jul 2006 (Forum)
A fast inspection (I had to go back to work) results in that no fluid is lost from brake reservour and non was spit against the inner wheels. What do ou guys think went wrong? Do you think its to do with the power brake? How do you think I should start to tackle this? As some of you may have read in my previous posts I was hearing a strange noise on braking which I thought came from the rear wheels. -
New brake pads run-in? 22 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Hi all! Had front brakes' pads replaced this morning. You never expect the car to behave so differently after such a replacement, but it does! The brake pedal 'bites' so high now (comparatively) that I kept stopping meters before where I intended to!! -
Cav Brake Grinding Sound 5 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Hi, I have a 95 Cav 1.8Lsi, 139k, had new disks and pads approx 6 months ago, shortly after fitting I noticed a noise similar to when pads have worn completely and its metal on metal only on the left hand side. The noise does not appear when braking at speed eg slowing on a motorway of speeds 60/70mph or when braking hard eg if someone pulls out on you, it happens when gently braking from 20 to stop. It doesn't happen everytime, but it doesn't appear to be temperature driven. -
Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - Brake fluid - is it corrosive? 12 Apr 2002 (Forum)
My wife's Golf was serviced by the local VW dealer today including 2 yearly brake fluid change. I got home from work early so took a look under the bonnet. All was well, except just a moment what is that damp patch on the offside strut? Eye drawn to the brake master cylinder - full to the brim with evidence of seepage from the top - sure enough below it on the chassis leg a small pool of brake fluid. -
Nissan note 2010 - Third brake light or high brake light 28 Jan 2024 (Forum)
Hi Can someone please advise whether the below is still current : The "3rd" brakelight is an "Optional Lamp" and it is not obligatory... -
Last mainstream car with front drum brakes? 8 Feb 2021 (Forum)
Clearing some junk out of the shed last night, I came across a set of brake shoes for a long-extinct Vauxhall Viva - front shoes, that is. The car was an early 'HC' model - '72 'J'-reg - but it got me wondering when did the last mainstream car roll off the production line sporting front drum brakes?
